What Albany's live-event calendar covers
Albany's ticketed events run through one downtown arena, two historic stages and a performing arts center shaped like an egg, with the Capital Region's summer venues in Saratoga Springs filling the warm months. The anchor is MVP Arena, the 1990 arena on South Pearl Street that hosts touring concerts, Siena Saints men's basketball, Albany Firebirds arena football and family shows. For theater and seated concerts, the choice is usually the Palace Theatre or The Egg. For touring Broadway, many Capital Region fans drive to Proctors in Schenectady.
The calendar changes shape with the seasons. Winter is arena and theater season. Spring brings arena football. July and August belong to Saratoga, where the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) and Saratoga Race Course draw crowds from across the Northeast.
- Arena events: MVP Arena (concerts, Siena basketball, Albany Firebirds, ice shows and wrestling).
- Theaters and halls: Palace Theatre, The Egg, Capital Repertory Theatre (theREP), Proctors in Schenectady.
- Summer outdoors: SPAC amphitheater and Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs.
- Baseball: Tri-City ValleyCats at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium in Troy.
Which Albany venue hosts what
MVP Arena
The arena opened on January 30, 1990, as Knickerbocker Arena and has also been Pepsi Arena (1997–2006) and the Times Union Center (2007–2021); it took the MVP Arena name in 2022, so older tickets and maps may use any of those names. Albany County owns it and ASM Global operates it. Capacity runs to about 15,357 for concerts, 15,229 for basketball and 14,236 for hockey and lacrosse. It has hosted the 1992 and 2001 men's Frozen Four, the 1992 Royal Rumble and ArenaBowl XXXII in 2019.
For an end-stage concert, the lower sections along the sides closest to the stage give a better angle than deep floor rows, and the upper level directly facing the stage shows the full production. For basketball, sideline seats in the lower bowl are the premium; the corners trade a little angle for a lower cost.
Palace Theatre
The Palace opened on October 23, 1931, as a John Eberson movie palace at 19 Clinton Avenue and seats 2,844. A nonprofit has operated it since 1984, and it hosts more than 150 events a year, from rock and comedy to ballet and Broadway, and serves as home of the Albany Symphony Orchestra. In a house that size the front of the balcony is often a better buy than the rear orchestra, which sits under the overhang.
The Egg
The Egg, opened in 1978 at the northeast corner of the Empire State Plaza, holds two rooms: the 982-seat Kitty Carlisle Hart Theatre and the 450-seat Lewis A. Swyer Theatre. It books folk, rock, comedy and dance, and its small size means nearly every seat is close.
Proctors and theREP
Proctors, built in 1926 by vaudeville impresario F. F. Proctor in Schenectady, is the Capital Region's main stop for large touring Broadway productions. Capital Repertory Theatre (theREP), the region's professional theater company, works out of a North Pearl Street building it bought with Proctors in 2017.
Teams and sports in the Capital Region
Albany has no team in the four major leagues, so the sports calendar is college basketball, arena football and summer baseball. Fans who want NFL, NBA, NHL or MLB usually look to New York City, a train ride south.
- Siena Saints men's basketball plays home games at MVP Arena under a lease extended in December 2024. The Albany Cup series with the UAlbany Great Danes is the local rivalry game to watch for.
- Albany Firebirds play arena football in Arena Football One. The team went 12–0 in 2025 and won the league's first Arena Crown; the 2026 regular season ran from April 11 to July 19 with six home dates.
- Tri-City ValleyCats play Frontier League baseball at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium on the Hudson Valley Community College campus in Troy, which opened in 2002 with 6,500 seats plus lawn space for about 1,500.
One change to note: the National Lacrosse League's Albany FireWolves relocated to Oshawa, Ontario, before the 2026 season, as the league announced on August 19, 2025. Older guides that list lacrosse at MVP Arena are out of date.
Saratoga Springs in summer: SPAC and the racetrack
Saratoga Springs, north of Albany on the Northway (I-87), is where the region's summer demand concentrates. Plan these trips around the calendar, because both venues are seasonal.
Saratoga Performing Arts Center
SPAC opened on July 9, 1966, inside Saratoga Spa State Park. The amphitheater has 5,103 reserved seats under the roof and a lawn that holds up to about 20,000. The New York City Ballet spends a week there in July and the Philadelphia Orchestra spends three weeks in August, while Live Nation books the rock, pop and country tours. SPAC hosted Farm Aid in 2013 and 2024.
Seat choice is the main decision. Reserved seats guarantee a covered view; the lawn is general admission (first come, first served), with a view that depends on how early you arrive and how far back you end up. Bring a blanket and check the venue's current rules on chairs.
Saratoga Race Course
The track opened on August 3, 1863, and its summer meet runs from mid-July through Labor Day, about 40 racing days. The Travers Stakes, run at Saratoga since 1864, is the meet's signature day and its biggest ticket. The Belmont Stakes also moved to Saratoga for three straight runnings while Belmont Park was rebuilt, which pushed June demand in the area far above normal. Hotel rooms in Saratoga Springs are scarce and priced high during the meet, so many visitors stay in Albany and drive up.
When to go: Albany's event seasons
- November to March: Siena basketball at MVP Arena, holiday shows at the Palace, touring Broadway at Proctors. Winter weather can slow I-87 and I-90, so leave extra time.
- April to July: Albany Firebirds arena football and the arena's spring concert run.
- June to early September: ValleyCats baseball, SPAC's concert, ballet and orchestra season, and the Saratoga racing meet from mid-July.
- September and October: Fall tours at MVP Arena and the start of theater seasons at the Palace and The Egg.
Demand spikes when a major tour plays MVP Arena, since it is the largest indoor venue in the Capital Region and draws fans from well beyond the city. Travers weekend and SPAC's biggest concerts are the summer peaks.
Getting to Albany's venues
Downtown Albany is compact, and MVP Arena, the Palace Theatre and The Egg are close enough that a hotel near the Empire State Plaza puts all three within a short walk or ride.
- By train: Amtrak's Albany–Rensselaer station sits across the Hudson River, about 1.5 miles from downtown, and ranked as Amtrak's ninth-busiest station as of 2020. Empire Service trains link it to New York City; a cab or rideshare covers the last stretch to the arena.
- By car: MVP Arena is reached from I-787. The MVP Parking Garage sits behind and attached to the arena (use 1 Market Street for GPS), and event rates vary by show.
- Street parking: As of 2026, metered spaces in the downtown business district are free after 5 p.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends, per the arena's parking page. Check signs and the MVP Arena parking guide before you go.
- Saratoga trips: Driving is the practical choice for SPAC and the track; plan for heavy traffic on Travers weekend and before large SPAC concerts.
Neighborhood notes and tips for visitors
- Around MVP Arena: The arena sits downtown just off I-787. Restaurants and bars along nearby downtown blocks fill up before Siena games and concerts, so book a table if you want a sit-down meal.
- Around the Palace: The Palace is on Clinton Avenue near Pearl Street at the north end of downtown, an easy walk from Empire State Plaza hotels.
- Around The Egg: The Egg is part of the Empire State Plaza, so parking in the plaza garages and dinner downtown are the usual pairing.
- Saratoga Springs: Broadway, the town's main street, holds most restaurants for a pre-show meal before SPAC or after a day at the track.
For any resale purchase, compare the section map with the venue's own chart, since MVP Arena's floor layout changes with each tour. Every order on this site carries a 100% guarantee. Check each venue's current bag and entry policy before you leave, because rules differ between the arena, the theaters and SPAC.
