What New York's live-event calendar covers
New York City has something ticketed almost every night of the year: nine major-league teams across the NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL, the largest theater district in the country, a dense circuit of comedy clubs, and arenas that host touring concerts between home games. The short answer for a visitor is that there is no off-season, only a shift in what is on.
The scene splits into four buying markets, and each behaves differently:
- Sports, spread across all five boroughs plus New Jersey and Long Island, with the Yankees, Mets, Knicks, Rangers and Nets drawing the deepest local demand.
- Concerts, from 20,000-seat arena shows at Madison Square Garden and Barclays Center to stadium tours at MetLife Stadium, Citi Field and Yankee Stadium.
- Broadway, 41 houses of 500 seats or more running eight performances a week.
- Comedy, from 120-seat basement rooms with several shows a night to arena-scale specials at the Garden and the Beacon Theatre.
Many metro-area teams and venues sit outside Manhattan, so the most useful planning question is not just what is on but which train reaches it.
Where each team plays
Two of the city's teams play in New Jersey and one on Long Island, a detail that catches first-time visitors who assume everything is in Manhattan.
- New York Giants and New York Jets (NFL) share MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, opened in 2010 with a capacity of about 82,500. The Giants date to 1925 and hold eight league titles, four of them Super Bowls.
- New York Yankees (MLB) play at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, opened in 2009 and seating 46,537. The franchise has won 27 World Series. New York City FC (MLS) also plays there until its own stadium opens at Willets Point, reported for 2027.
- New York Mets (MLB) play at Citi Field in Flushing Meadows, Queens, opened in 2009 and seating 41,922.
- New York Knicks (NBA) and New York Rangers (NHL) share Madison Square Garden in Midtown. The current Garden, the fourth building to carry the name, opened in 1968 and seats 19,812 for basketball and 18,006 for hockey.
- Brooklyn Nets (NBA) and New York Liberty (WNBA) play at Barclays Center, opened in 2012 at Atlantic and Flatbush avenues.
- New York Islanders (NHL) play at UBS Arena in Elmont, opened in 2021, and the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center in Newark.
For a single-game trip, the Garden and Barclays are the easiest venues to reach on short notice. MetLife requires the most planning, because the only direct rail service runs on event days through Secaucus Junction.
Concerts in New York: arenas, stadiums and the theater-size rooms
Most "concerts tonight" searches in New York resolve to one of a handful of buildings, and the size of the room shapes both the experience and how fast a show sells.
Arenas
Madison Square Garden books major tours most nights it is not hosting the Knicks or Rangers and holds up to about 22,000 for concerts. Billy Joel's monthly residency ran there from 2014 to July 2024. Barclays Center holds up to about 20,000 and opened with Jay-Z shows in 2012. For both, the lower bowl on the sides gives the best mix of distance and sound; seats directly behind an end stage are usually sold as obstructed or not at all.
Stadiums and summer shows
The biggest tours play MetLife Stadium, Citi Field (Paul McCartney in 2009, Beyoncé in 2016) or Yankee Stadium. Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, a 1923 tennis stadium seating about 14,000, runs an outdoor summer concert series. Open-air shows are weather-dependent, so check the venue's rain policy before you buy.
Theaters and halls
- Radio City Music Hall, 5,960 seats, opened in 1932 at Rockefeller Center.
- Beacon Theatre, 2,894 seats on three levels at Broadway and 74th Street; the Allman Brothers Band played it 238 times between 1989 and 2014.
- Kings Theatre, a 3,250-seat 1929 movie palace in Flatbush, Brooklyn, restored and reopened in 2015.
- Carnegie Hall, opened in 1891, with the 2,790-seat Stern Auditorium as its main room.
In the theater-size rooms, the front of the first balcony often beats the rear orchestra, because the overhang above the back orchestra rows cuts off sound and the top of the stage picture.
Comedy shows in New York: the clubs worth knowing
New York's comedy clubs mostly use the showcase format: five to seven comics doing sets of roughly 10 to 15 minutes, so the lineup matters more than any single name. Lineups change nightly, and weekend shows at the established rooms are the first to sell out.
- Comedy Cellar, 117 MacDougal Street in Greenwich Village, founded in 1981. It runs shows in the original basement room and the larger Village Underground around the corner, with ten shows on Fridays and Saturdays.
- Gotham Comedy Club, 208 West 23rd Street in Chelsea, founded in 1996 and in its current Art Deco space since 2006; Comedy Central's Live at Gotham taped there.
- Comic Strip Live, 1568 Second Avenue on the Upper East Side, open since 1976; Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld and Eddie Murphy came up there.
- Stand Up NY, founded in 1986 and moved in 2020 to a roughly 120-seat room on West 46th Street near Times Square.
- Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, the improv and sketch company, reopened its New York stage at 242 East 14th Street in September 2024.
Carolines on Broadway, long the Times Square comedy landmark, closed at the end of 2022; older guides that still list it are out of date. Touring headliners play the Beacon Theatre, Radio City and the Garden, and the New York Comedy Festival fills rooms across all five boroughs each November. Read the ticket terms for any drink minimum or age limit before you go.
Broadway and the Theater District
Broadway is defined by size and place: a professional house of 500 or more seats in the Theater District, which runs from West 41st Street north along both sides of Broadway to 53rd Street, plus the Vivian Beaumont at Lincoln Center. There are 41 such theaters, and only they are eligible for the Tony Awards. Attendance runs to roughly 12 million a season, and about a third of buyers are local.
Demand is steadiest for long-running hits and spikes in the weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year's, during school breaks and on Saturday nights. Midweek evenings and January and early February are typically the easier tickets. In most Broadway houses, the center front mezzanine sees the whole stage picture and is often a better seat than the side orchestra.
The New York calendar, season by season
- Spring (late March to June): baseball opens at Yankee Stadium and Citi Field; the Knicks, Nets, Rangers and Islanders finish their regular seasons and, in good years, play into May and June; many new Broadway productions open ahead of the Tony Awards.
- Summer: baseball, stadium concerts, the Liberty at Barclays, and the outdoor series at Forest Hills Stadium.
- Late August to mid-September: the US Open fills the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens; the 2026 main draw ran August 30 to September 13.
- Fall: NFL Sundays at MetLife, the NBA and NHL openers in October, the New York Comedy Festival in November.
- Holidays: the Radio City Christmas Spectacular runs from early November into early January (its 2026 run opens November 4), and Broadway has its busiest weeks.
The weeks when several of these overlap, such as late October and the holiday stretch, are when hotel rooms and popular dates go fastest.
Getting to the venues, and where to stay nearby
Driving to most New York venues is slow and parking is limited, so plan on rail.
- Madison Square Garden sits on top of Penn Station (Amtrak, LIRR, NJ Transit) and the A, C, E, 1, 2 and 3 subway lines. The blocks around it are crowded before events; Koreatown and the Flatiron area, a short walk away, have more places to eat.
- Barclays Center is above Atlantic Av–Barclays Center station (2, 3, 4, 5, B, D, N, Q, R and W trains) and the LIRR's Atlantic Terminal. Fort Greene and Park Slope nearby have restaurants within walking distance.
- Yankee Stadium has its own subway stop (161st St–Yankee Stadium on the 4, B and D) and a Metro-North station at East 153rd Street.
- Citi Field and the US Open share Mets–Willets Point station on the 7 train and the LIRR Port Washington Branch.
- MetLife Stadium is reached by NJ Transit rail through Secaucus Junction to the Meadowlands station on event days, or by Coach USA bus from the Port Authority Bus Terminal. See NJ Transit's Meadowlands page for event schedules.
Bag rules vary by building and change often. As of fall 2026, Barclays Center bars backpacks and bags larger than 10 by 6 by 2 inches, and MetLife Stadium has enforced a clear-bag policy for NFL games. Check each venue's current policy before you go.
Tips for out-of-town visitors
- Match the venue to your hotel. A Midtown hotel puts the Garden, Radio City, Broadway and Carnegie Hall in walking distance; a MetLife game from Midtown is a two-transfer trip each way.
- Leave time after the show. After a sold-out arena show, the station under the building jams; walking to the next stop often saves time.
- Book comedy for a specific show time. Clubs with several shows a night seat each show separately, and the late shows on weekends are often the easiest to get into.
