Pentatonix, in brief
Pentatonix is an a cappella group (singing with no instruments, so every sound comes from the voice) from Arlington, Texas. The lineup is Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin Maldonado, Kevin Olusola and Matt Sallee. They tour in two main modes: holiday tours built on their Christmas albums, and general tours of pop covers and originals that have played arenas, amphitheaters and state fairs. If you are buying in the fall, you are most likely buying a Christmas show.
Hoying, Grassi and Maldonado grew up together at Martin High School in Arlington. With Olusola and original bass Avi Kaplan, they won the third season of NBC's The Sing-Off in 2011, then built a following on YouTube with covers and medleys. Kaplan left in 2017 and Sallee took over as bass. The group has won three Grammy Awards: Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella in 2015 and 2016, the first a cappella act to win it, and Best Country Duo/Group Performance in 2017 for "Jolene" with Dolly Parton. They received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2023.
Why Christmas is the center of their touring year
Holiday music is the core of the group's catalog. That's Christmas to Me (2014) was the fourth best-selling album in the United States that year, and the group has followed it with a run of holiday records: A Pentatonix Christmas (2016), a 2018 holiday album and tour, a 2020 holiday album recorded in isolation, Evergreen (2021), Holidays Around the World (2022), The Greatest Christmas Hits (2023) and Christmas in the City (2025). Their versions of "Little Drummer Boy", "Mary, Did You Know?" and "Hallelujah" are among their best known.
Many of those albums came with a North American holiday tour:
- A 2018 holiday tour accompanied that year's Christmas album.
- The Evergreen Christmas Tour began November 27, 2021.
- A Christmas Spectacular began November 17, 2022, in Oakland, California, after a one-off Hollywood Bowl show with Darren Criss that September.
- The Christmas in the City tour began November 8, 2025, in West Valley City, Utah. In August 2026 the group announced a new North American leg alongside a deluxe edition of the album, due October 30, 2026.
What a Pentatonix concert is like
The show is the voices. Olusola's beatboxing and Sallee's bass carry the rhythm while the other three handle melody and harmony, and the arrangements move quickly between full-group numbers, smaller groupings and solo features. Olusola's "celloboxing" (playing cello while beatboxing) is a long-running highlight, and audience sing-alongs are part of the format. The 2023 leg of the group's world tour set list, for example, mixed originals with covers such as "Creep", "Jolene", "Hallelujah" and "Bohemian Rhapsody".
Holiday dates are built around familiar carols and the group's Christmas originals, which makes them a common pick for a family outing or a group gift rather than a late-night concert.
Tours and notable performances
Beyond the holiday runs, the group's touring history includes:
- 2012 and 2013: their first two national headlining tours, the first spanning 30 cities.
- 2015: the On My Way Home Tour across North America, Europe and Asia, and an opening slot on Kelly Clarkson's Piece by Piece Tour.
- 2016 to 2017: the Pentatonix World Tour across Japan, Europe, Oceania, Asia and North America, including three July 4 shows at the Hollywood Bowl in 2017 and a string of state fair dates. The final show, on September 3, 2017, in Essex Junction, Vermont, was Kaplan's last with the group.
- 2019 to 2023: Pentatonix: The World Tour, a greatest-hits tour that played arenas such as Madison Square Garden and amphitheaters such as Shoreline Amphitheatre and Merriweather Post Pavilion, with the European leg delayed to 2023 by the pandemic.
- 2019: their largest crowd to that point, at the closing ceremony of the 24th World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia.

Where to sit to hear the harmonies
Venue types vary by tour, from arenas and large theaters to outdoor amphitheaters and fairgrounds, so check the seating map on your event. For a vocal group, sound quality is the deciding factor:
- Center sections facing the stage: the best choice. You hear the five parts balanced, the way the arrangements were written, rather than whichever singer is nearest.
- Lower level, a little back from the stage: better than the first few rows on the side. A slight elevation lets you see all five singers at once instead of looking past the nearest one.
- Floor seats at an arena: close, but on a flat floor the view past the rows ahead can be limited, especially for children.
- Amphitheater lawn: a relaxed, lower-cost option for summer dates, though you lose some vocal detail at a distance.
Avoid seats behind the stage or marked limited view. With no instruments to watch, seeing the singers interact is a large part of the show.
When demand peaks
The holiday calendar drives demand. Dates in December, especially weekend shows close to Christmas, typically draw the most buyers, while shows earlier in November and on weeknights usually have more seats available. Families buying in groups also make blocks of adjacent seats harder to find as a date approaches.
- Buy groups early. Four or more seats together in the center sections are the first to thin out.
- Watch for added dates. Holiday tours are announced in the late summer or early fall, typically with presales before the general on-sale.
- Resale prices move with the calendar, generally rising into mid-December and sometimes easing for weeknight dates.

Frequently asked questions
Does Pentatonix tour every Christmas?

How did Pentatonix get started?
Three of the members grew up together in Arlington, Texas. The five-member group formed in 2011 and won the third season of NBC's The Sing-Off that year.
