What Houston's live-event scene covers
Houston has major-league teams in football, baseball, basketball and soccer: the Houston Texans (NFL), Houston Astros (MLB), Houston Rockets (NBA), Houston Dynamo FC (MLS) and Houston Dash (NWSL). It also has a 17-block downtown Theater District, large concert venues in the suburbs, and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, which mixes rodeo with headline concerts for close to three weeks every year.
Three of the pro venues are clustered on the east side of downtown. Daikin Park, Toyota Center and Shell Energy Stadium are each a short walk or rail ride apart. The football stadium sits south of downtown in Reliant Park, on the METRORail Red Line. The big suburban rooms, the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands and Smart Financial Centre in Sugar Land, mean a drive, so check the address before you assume a show is downtown.
- Downtown and East Downtown: Daikin Park, Toyota Center, Shell Energy Stadium, the Theater District.
- Reliant Park: the football stadium, home to the Texans, the rodeo and the Texas Bowl.
- Suburbs: the Pavilion (The Woodlands) and Smart Financial Centre (Sugar Land).
- Comedy: the Houston Improv and The Riot.
Concerts in Houston: arenas, amphitheaters and the rodeo
For anyone searching concerts in Houston or concerts tonight, the room matters as much as the act. These are the main options.
Toyota Center
The downtown arena opened in October 2003 and is home to the Rockets, as well as hosting most arena tours that come through town. For an end-stage show, the lower-bowl sections on the sides near the stage beat the back of the floor. The club sections (105–109 and 118–122) add premium seating and lounge access.
Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion
Usually called simply the Pavilion, this amphitheater in The Woodlands holds about 16,500: roughly 6,500 covered seats and lawn space for up to 10,000 more. It opened in 1990. In summer, covered seats are worth the extra cost for shade and protection from rain, while the lawn is the casual, cheaper option, best with a blanket and an early arrival.
Stadium shows and the rodeo
Stadium tours play the Texans' stadium in Reliant Park. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo pairs rodeo performances with concerts by headline acts, and attendance set a record of more than 2.7 million in 2025. The action happens on the stadium floor, so lower-level seats see the most, while upper-level seats rely more on the video boards.
Theater District rooms
The Revention Music Center, formerly the Bayou Music Center, in the Bayou Place complex books mid-size concerts downtown. The surrounding district holds more than 19,000 seats for symphony, opera, ballet and theater.
Comedy shows in Houston: the Improv, The Riot and Sugar Land
People searching for comedy shows in Houston have three main choices, ranging from a long-running club to a newer independent room and a large theater for touring headliners.
- Houston Improv (7620 Katy Freeway, in the Marqé center) is the city's main headliner club. Guests must be 18 or older, and 21 to drink. Each guest has a two-item minimum, which any food or drink counts toward. Parking is free, including in the center's garage.
- The Riot began in 2020 and opened a permanent 150-seat showroom at 1925 Washington Avenue, in the Old Sixth Ward, in August 2026. Its lineup runs from Monday open mics and weekend showcases to headliner sets, and it produces the Riot Comedy Festival each April.
- Smart Financial Centre in Sugar Land, about 20 miles southwest of downtown, opened in January 2017 with back-to-back Jerry Seinfeld shows. It is a common stop for big-name comedy tours.
The Improv sells whole tables of 2, 4, 6 or 8 rather than single seats, so buy the table that fits your group. The front tables get the most crowd work. At a large theater like Smart Financial Centre, a center seat a little way back usually beats a far-side seat close to the stage.
Houston teams and the buildings they play in
- Houston Texans (NFL): the stadium in Reliant Park opened in 2002 as Reliant Stadium, carried the NRG Stadium name from 2014 and, as of the 2026 NFL season, has gone back to the Reliant name. Expect to see either name on tickets and maps. It seats 72,220 for football and was the first NFL stadium built with a retractable roof.
- Houston Astros (MLB): Daikin Park, known as Minute Maid Park until its recent renaming, opened in 2000 on the site of the old Union Station. It has a retractable roof, natural grass and 41,168 seats.
- Houston Rockets (NBA): Toyota Center, downtown since 2003.
- Houston Dynamo FC (MLS) and Houston Dash (NWSL): Shell Energy Stadium in East Downtown, a soccer-specific stadium opened in 2012 that seats 20,656.
- College football: the Texas Bowl is played at the Reliant Park stadium in late December.
- Arts: the Theater District is home to the Houston Grand Opera, the Houston Symphony, the Houston Ballet, Theatre Under the Stars and the Alley Theatre, Texas's oldest professional theater company, founded in 1947.
Houston's event calendar
- Late winter to early spring: the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, a 20-day run at Reliant Park with rodeo and concerts. Rockets basketball at Toyota Center.
- Late March to fall: Astros baseball at Daikin Park, under the roof when the heat or rain calls for it.
- Spring through fall: Dynamo and Dash soccer in East Downtown, plus the outdoor concert season at the Pavilion.
- April: the Riot Comedy Festival.
- September to January: Texans football.
- Late December: the Texas Bowl.
Summer heat and storms shape what is comfortable. Under the retractable roofs at Daikin Park and the football stadium, the weather rarely matters. At the Pavilion and Shell Energy Stadium, it does, so check the forecast and favor covered seats when you can.
Getting around Houston to the venues
- METRORail Red Line: runs from downtown through the Museum District and the Texas Medical Center to Reliant Park. For Texans games, the rodeo and stadium concerts, it beats parking.
- Downtown venues: Daikin Park, Toyota Center, Shell Energy Stadium and the Theater District are close enough to walk between, or to connect on light rail.
- The Pavilion and Smart Financial Centre: both require a car or rideshare, and Houston freeway traffic can add a lot of time on a weekday evening.
- Parking at Reliant Park: the walk from the outer color-coded lots can take 30 to 60 minutes or more, so pick a lot by distance, not just price.
As of the 2026 season, the Texans use mobile-only tickets and a clear-bag policy, with gates opening two hours before kickoff; check the team's know-before-you-go page for current rules.
Neighborhood notes and tips for out-of-town visitors
- Downtown and East Downtown (EaDo): the best base for Astros, Rockets and soccer games and for the Theater District. Hotels, restaurants and bars line the blocks around Daikin Park and Shell Energy Stadium.
- Museum District and Medical Center: on the Red Line between downtown and Reliant Park, with easy rail access in both directions.
- Washington Avenue: home to The Riot, with a strip of bars and restaurants nearby.
- Katy Freeway corridor: close to the Houston Improv and full of hotels.
- The Woodlands and Sugar Land: stay nearby if a Pavilion or Smart Financial Centre show is the main reason for the trip.
Houston is spread out, so group your plans by area. GoodSeats orders carry a 100% guarantee. For Astros dates and ballpark rules, the team's ballpark page is the place to check.
