Clutch City: the Rockets in brief
The Houston Rockets play their home games at Toyota Center in downtown Houston, with an NBA regular season that runs from October into April and playoffs after that. The team competes in the Southwest Division of the Western Conference, alongside its Texas rivals, the San Antonio Spurs and the Dallas Mavericks.
The franchise began as an expansion team in San Diego in 1967 and moved to Houston in 1971. Its identity rests on great centers and two championship springs:
- Moses Malone led the team to its first NBA Finals in 1981.
- Hakeem Olajuwon, the first overall pick in 1984, carried Houston to the 1986 Finals and then to back-to-back titles in 1994 and 1995, the run that gave the city the nickname Clutch City.
- Yao Ming, the first overall pick in 2002, made the Rockets one of the most widely followed teams in the world.
- James Harden's nine seasons produced no losing records and two trips to the Western Conference finals.
Rosters and coaches change from season to season, so check the team's site for the current lineup before you buy around a particular player.
Toyota Center: a downtown arena built below grade
Toyota Center opened in October 2003 at 1510 Polk Street, on the east side of downtown near the George R. Brown Convention Center. It seats 18,104 for basketball. The seating bowl sits about 32 feet below street level, so fans enter on a street-level concourse and walk down to lower seats instead of climbing ramps.
The arena is organized around two main seating levels separated by suites:
- The 100 level, the lower bowl, including the club sections along the sidelines: sections 105–109 on one side and 118–122 on the other, about 2,900 club seats in all.
- Floor-level lounges, three private spaces tied to courtside seating.
- Lower and upper suites, 103 in total.
- The 400 level, the upper bowl, reached from the Upper Concourse.
Choosing seats for a Rockets game
Club sections on the sideline
Sections 105–109 and 118–122 cover the middle of the court and include club access, so they carry the highest demand outside courtside. The view from the middle rows of these sections is the best in the building: centered, close and high enough to see over the benches.
Lower bowl corners and baselines
The 100-level corners are a good compromise, with an angled view that still shows both baskets. Baseline seats behind the hoops give a close look at drives and free throws at your end but flatten the far half of the court. Low baseline rows can also look through the basket stanchion, so a few rows up is usually the better pick.
The 400 level
The upper bowl holds most of the lower-cost seats. Its front rows along the sidelines give a full, readable view of the floor and are usually the best value in the building. The top rows of the upper corners are the weakest seats, with a steep climb and a distant view of the far basket.
Who should pay for what
Families and first-timers get the most from the upper sideline. Fans who want to hear the game and see the players up close should look at the lower baseline. Groups entertaining clients get the most predictable night from the club sections.
Season calendar and the Rockets games that draw the most demand
The NBA regular season runs from October to April, 82 games with 41 at home, preceded by preseason games in October. The play-in tournament and playoffs run from April into June for teams that qualify.
- Texas rivals: home games against the Spurs and the Mavericks bring traveling fans from San Antonio and Dallas and consistently draw well.
- Golden State: the Rockets met the Warriors in four playoff series between 2015 and 2019, losing all four, and the matchup still carries an edge.
- NBA Cup games in November and December count toward the standings.
- Holiday and weekend dates, including the January Martin Luther King Jr. Day slate, draw families.
Weeknight games against Eastern Conference opponents without a national star tend to have the most available inventory. Demand also tracks the team itself: winning stretches move the upper level first, as casual fans look for an affordable way in.
Parking, METRORail and entry at Toyota Center
Driving is the most common way in. As of the 2025–26 season, the arena's adjacent Toyota Tundra Garage (1515 Jackson Street) is reserved for suite and club holders at Rockets games, and the arena points other fans to the roughly 10,000 surface spaces within a few blocks. Arrive early on nights when the convention center or Discovery Green has its own event. Lyft pickups are on Austin Street near Root Memorial Square Park.
For transit, METRORail's Green and Purple lines stop at Convention District station on the east side of downtown; check METRO's trip planner for the stop closest to your entrance.
The arena allows bags no larger than 10 by 6 by 2 inches (about the size of a clutch), with lockers available for a fee. Entry is by mobile ticket through the team or AXS app, and there is no re-entry. Check the arena's A–Z guide for the current policy before you go. Houston does not have an NBA tailgating tradition; most fans eat downtown or in East Downtown before tipoff. Every order on this site is backed by a 100% guarantee.
Rockets history and moments fans still talk about
Before Toyota Center, the Rockets played at the San Diego Sports Arena, Hofheinz Pavilion and The Summit (later the Compaq Center).
- 1994: Houston trailed the New York Knicks three games to two in the Finals, then won the last two at home for the franchise's first title.
- 1995: the Rockets swept the Orlando Magic and became the first team to win the title as a sixth seed.
- 2007–08: a 22-game winning streak.
- 2015–2019: four postseason series against Golden State that defined the Harden era.
The team has retired eight numbers. Clutch the Bear, the mascot since 1995, was inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2006. Team history is on the Rockets' official site.
