Houston football in brief: from the Veer to the Big 12
The Houston Cougars play home football games at TDECU Stadium, a roughly 40,000-seat open-air stadium on the University of Houston campus, less than three miles from downtown. Home games run from late August or early September through late November, and UH has competed in the Big 12 Conference since the 2023 season.
The program first took the field in 1946 and has won 11 conference championships. Its identity is offense. Bill Yeoman, the winningest coach in school history (1962 to 1986), pioneered the Veer option, led UH to four Southwest Conference titles and won the Cotton Bowl after the 1976 and 1979 seasons. In 1964 he signed Warren McVea, breaking the color barrier for major Texas football programs. The run-and-shoot teams that followed produced quarterback Andre Ware, who won the 1989 Heisman Trophy, and David Klingler, who once threw 11 touchdown passes in a game.
Later eras kept the passing tradition alive. Case Keenum, the NCAA's career passing leader, quarterbacked a 13–1 team in 2011, and the 2015 Cougars went 13–1 and beat Florida State in the Peach Bowl for the school's first New Year's Six win. Houston's highest final rankings are No. 4 in 1976, No. 5 in 1979 and No. 8 in 2015.
Where to sit at TDECU Stadium
TDECU Stadium has an unusual layout for a college venue. The field sits about 25 feet below the main concourse, so the lower bowl (about 20,000 seats) wraps the field and you walk down to most seats. The field runs roughly east to west, a choice the designers made after a sun study.
Sideline vs. end zone
The south side is the premium side: the club seats sit in the south lower bowl, with loge boxes on the concourse and suites one floor above, all much closer to the field than the press-level suites at most college stadiums. The south upper level (the 300 level) holds the skyline view. Sideline seats between the 30-yard lines on either side give the best look at the game; mid-level lower-bowl rows usually beat row 1, where the benches and sideline traffic block the near hash marks.
- East end zone: the student section and the Spirit of Houston marching band sit here, and the end zone is painted "Cougars." It is the loudest part of the building.
- West end zone: painted "Houston," with a deliberate gap in the upper deck at the northwest corner that frames the downtown skyline.
- Section 129 and the north-side loge boxes: these ticket holders use the Yeoman Red and White Hall, a gameday club and tribute to UH history at the northeast corner.
Heat and sun
Early-season games in Houston are hot and humid, even at night. With an east–west field, the afternoon sun sits to the south and west, so the north sideline tends to face it while the south stands have it at their backs. For a day game in late August or September, a south-side or covered seat is worth considering. Most seats are traditional benches; the stadium has about 3,800 chairback seats, including those in Sections 127 and 131.
Rivalries and the Houston games that draw a crowd
Joining the Big 12 in 2023 put old Southwest Conference opponents back on the schedule, and those games drive the strongest demand.
- Rice: the crosstown rival and UH's most-played opponent. The winner takes the Bayou Bucket. Houston leads the series by a wide margin, and the game is no longer annual.
- Texas Tech: a former SWC series that is now a conference game again, and one of the most evenly matched series on the schedule.
- Baylor and TCU: former SWC rivals now back as Big 12 opponents.
- Texas and Texas A&M: historic rivals the Cougars rarely play now that both are in the SEC. The Cougar Paw hand sign traces back to the Texas series.
Within the Big 12, visits from ranked teams and Texas programs with large fan bases near Houston tend to sell the most tickets. Early non-conference games are the easiest and least expensive way to see the stadium. Homecoming and late-season games with bowl implications also draw well, especially when UH is ranked.
Cougar Paw, Shasta Square and gameday in Houston
- The Cougar Paw: fans raise a right hand with the ring finger folded down. The sign dates to 1953, when the live cougar mascot, Shasta, lost a toe in a cage door before a game in Austin and Texas fans mocked the Cougars with the gesture. UH fans adopted it, and it stuck after Houston beat Texas 30–0 in 1976.
- Legends Plaza: outside the northeast entrance, with a statue of Bill Yeoman and displays honoring Andre Ware and Lombardi Award winner Wilson Whitley.
- Cullen Boulevard tailgating: the university closes Cullen Boulevard near the stadium on game days. Student groups set up in "Shasta Square" just east of the stadium, and the alumni organization hosts "Party on the Plaza" beside them. RVs have used lot 16B off Elgin Street.
The easiest way to the stadium is METRORail's Southeast Line, which stops within about 100 yards of the southwest entrance and connects to downtown. How Houston football tickets work
Houston sells season tickets first, and, as at most Big 12 schools, giving to the athletics donor program (Cougar Pride at UH) generally improves access to the best seats. Students receive tickets through a separate student program and sit in the east end zone. Single-game tickets go on sale to the public later, and tickets and parking are mobile.
At 40,000 seats, TDECU Stadium is small for the Big 12, so a sellout does not take much. For most non-conference games, tickets are easy to find. For the Texas Tech, Baylor and TCU games, a ranked visitor or a late-season game with a title race at stake, the primary allotment can go quickly and the resale market becomes the main way in. Stadium name, entry and other details
The stadium's naming-rights holder, Texas Dow Employees Credit Union, merged with Space City Credit Union in 2024 and rebranded as Space City Financial, and the company said the stadium would be renamed Space City Financial Stadium. As of the 2026 season, the university's own fan guide still calls the venue TDECU Stadium. You may see either name on tickets and maps; they are the same building, on the former site of Robertson Stadium.
