The Dolphins' stadium, and much more
Hard Rock Stadium is the 64,767-seat home of the Miami Dolphins and the University of Miami Hurricanes in Miami Gardens, north of downtown Miami. A canopy added in 2016 shades most of the seats while leaving the field open to the sky, and that canopy is the single biggest factor in choosing a seat.
The stadium opened on August 16, 1987, as Joe Robbie Stadium and has carried six names since, becoming Hard Rock Stadium in August 2016. It hosts far more than football: the annual Orange Bowl, the Miami Open tennis tournament, and the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix on a temporary circuit around the grounds. It has hosted six Super Bowls, the 2024 Copa America final and matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, plus major stadium concert tours.
Seating levels and which side is which
The bowl has three main tiers, numbered by level.
- 100 level (lower bowl): wraps the field. The Dolphins' bench is on the south sideline, with sections around 144 to 148 behind it; the visitors are on the north sideline, around sections 117 to 121, with 118 near midfield. End-zone sections run roughly 102 to 106 on the west end and 130 to 134 on the east.
- Club and field-level premium: the 72 Club sits at field level on the south sideline between the 35-yard lines, with reclining seats and in-seat service, and the Lexus North Sideline Club covers sections around 117 to 119 with padded seats and air-conditioned lounges.
- 300 level (upper deck): the top tier, sitting most fully under the canopy. Midfield upper sections are around 318 to 321 on the north side and 343 to 346 on the south.
These section ranges come from seating guides rather than the stadium itself; confirm them on the event map, since concerts, soccer and the Grand Prix use different layouts.
Shade, sun and the best seats
Why the south side wins
The canopy covers more than 90% of the seats, but not equally. The south sideline, behind the Dolphins, gets the most shade during afternoon games, and the upper rows under the canopy are the coolest seats in the building. The north (visitors') side takes more direct sun, especially at early-season 1 p.m. kickoffs in September and October, when Miami heat and humidity are at their peak.
Good picks
- South sideline, middle and upper rows of the 100 level: shade, a midfield view and the Dolphins' bench in front of you.
- Upper-deck sideline: the most reliable shade and a full view of the field, and usually the way to see midfield for less.
- Clubs: air-conditioned lounges are worth real money on a hot afternoon.
Seats to think twice about
- Front rows of the lower bowl: sun at the edge of the canopy line and rain blowing in during a downpour.
- North side for a September day game: a long afternoon in direct sun if heat bothers you.
- Low end-zone rows: flat angle, hard to follow plays at the far end.
Late-season games and night kickoffs make sun less of a factor. Demand climbs for division games, prime-time broadcasts and visiting teams whose fans travel to South Florida in winter.
Parking, shuttles and rideshare
There is no rail station at the stadium, so nearly everyone arrives by car, rideshare or shuttle.
- Prepaid parking: as of the 2025 season, parking passes must be bought in advance, and day-of parking is not guaranteed. Lots open four hours before Dolphins kickoffs and five hours before Hurricanes games.
- Park and Ride: the stadium has run complimentary shuttles from off-site lots.
- Brightline: a complimentary shuttle has run from Brightline's Aventura station; plan to leave the stadium at least an hour before your return train.
- Rideshare: pickup has been in Lot 44, roughly a 25-minute walk from the stadium.
Tailgating rules, as of 2025: one space per vehicle, gas or charcoal grills only, no open fires, tents held down with weights rather than stakes, and no kegs.
Gates, clear bags and heat rules
As of the 2025 season, the stadium enforces a clear-bag policy, with bags no larger than 12 by 6 by 12 inches. Gates open two hours before Dolphins kickoffs and 90 minutes before Hurricanes games. The stadium is cashless, nonsmoking and uses digital tickets only, and there is generally no re-entry.
- Allowed: factory-sealed water bottles of 20 ounces or less.
- Not allowed: umbrellas, coolers and aerosol sunscreen, so apply sunscreen before you go through the gate.

Food on the concourses
The concessions lean local. Recent fan guides point to Cuban stands such as Cafe La Carreta and Sol Cubano and the Miami Beach burger spot Cheeseburger Baby, among others; vendors change from season to season. Plan for long lines at halftime of a sold-out game and drink water often on hot days.
From Joe Robbie Stadium to Hard Rock
Named for Dolphins founder Joe Robbie, the stadium opened in 1987 at a cost of about 115 million in 1980s dollars. Naming rights passed through Pro Player, Dolphins and Dolphin Stadium, Land Shark Stadium and Sun Life Stadium before the Hard Rock name arrived in 2016.
The defining change came with a privately funded renovation from 2015 to 2016, reported at about 350 million, which added the canopy and cut capacity from about 75,000 to 64,767. The stadium has hosted Super Bowls XXIII, XXIX, XXXIII, XLI, XLIV and LIV.
