Formula 1 in the United States, in brief
Formula 1 is the top class of single-seater, open-wheel road racing, sanctioned by the FIA and run commercially by the Formula One Group. The world championship began in 1950, and the 2027 season is scheduled for 24 Grands Prix. Three of them are in the United States, which makes the US the only country with more than one round on the 2027 calendar:
- Miami Grand Prix, at the Miami International Autodrome around Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. The 2027 race weekend is April 30 to May 2.
- United States Grand Prix, at Circuit of the Americas (COTA) east of Austin, Texas. The 2027 weekend is October 22 to 24.
- Las Vegas Grand Prix, on a street circuit that runs down the Las Vegas Strip. The 2027 weekend is November 18 to 20, and every session runs at night.
All three are new by Formula 1 standards. Austin has hosted since 2012, Miami since 2022 and Las Vegas since 2023; Miami and Las Vegas were both added after Liberty Media bought the sport's commercial rights in 2017. The races are very different experiences: Miami is a purpose-built campus around an NFL stadium, Austin is a permanent road course with hills and a concert stage, and Las Vegas is a Saturday-night race past the casinos.
How Formula 1 tickets are structured
Every Grand Prix sells roughly the same four tiers, and a resale listing almost always falls into one of them. Knowing which tier you are looking at is the most important step before you buy.
General admission
General admission (GA) gets you onto the grounds with no assigned seat. You watch from grass banks, standing areas or viewing platforms and move around the circuit as you like. Miami calls its GA ticket the Campus Pass; Austin sells 3-day GA wristbands. GA is the least expensive way in and the best way to see the track from several angles, but you will stand a lot, the best spots fill early, and on race day you may see a slice of the track rather than the start or the finish.
Grandstands
A grandstand ticket is a reserved seat in a named stand, usually for all three days. Grandstands are named by location (Start/Finish, Turn 1, Turn 18 and so on), and the name tells you which corners you will see. Some promoters also sell single-day grandstand seats, and Miami sells a Grandstand Pass that puts you in a different stand each day. Team grandstands, where fans of one team sit together, are a newer option at Miami and Austin.
Hospitality and clubs
Hospitality tickets add an indoor or shaded lounge, food and drinks, and usually a better seat. They are sold by the promoter under names such as club, suite or a branded venue, and they vary widely from race to race.
Paddock Club
The Paddock Club is Formula 1's own top hospitality tier, located in the paddock area close to the team garages and pit lane. It is sold as a weekend package and is the most expensive way to attend. Miami opened its Paddock Club to general public sale for the first time for 2027.
What drives demand
- Location. Start/finish and first-corner grandstands sell first because they see the start, the pit stops and the podium.
- Sunday. Race-day-only tickets draw more demand than Friday practice, and a 3-day ticket for a popular grandstand is usually the scarcest item.
- The championship. A close title fight lifts demand for the fall races in Austin and Las Vegas.
- Concerts and extras. Austin's weekend concerts and Miami's campus entertainment pull in fans who are not hardcore racing followers.
Read a listing carefully: confirm whether it is a 3-day ticket or a single day, whether it is GA or a reserved seat, and which grandstand it is in.
Miami: where to sit at the Miami International Autodrome
The Miami International Autodrome is a 3.36-mile, 19-turn temporary circuit built into the grounds and parking areas around Hard Rock Stadium, home of the Miami Dolphins. It is assembled a few weeks before race weekend and dismantled afterward. The promoter states that the first five editions all sold out, and the race is contracted through 2041.
For 2027 the named grandstands are:
- Start/Finish Grandstand: views of the grid, pit lane and the start. This is the stand for seeing the race begin and end.
- Turn 1 Grandstand: Turns 1 to 3, where the field funnels down on the opening lap.
- Turn 18 Grandstand: Turns 17 to 19, at the end of a long straight and one of the circuit's main overtaking spots.
- Marina Grandstands: Turns 6 to 8, in the Marina section and the other prime overtaking zone, according to the promoter.
- Beach Grandstands (North and South): Turns 11 and 12, with trackside videoboard performances.
- Team grandstands: sections for fans of eight teams in 2027.
For passing, Turn 18 and the Marina stands are the strongest choices. For the start and the podium, Start/Finish wins. The Campus Pass is GA: it covers trackside viewing decks, the fan zone and views into the team village, but no seat. Every ticket also opens the 300 level of Hard Rock Stadium, which gives a panoramic view of the track.
As of the 2026 event, the circuit is cashless, guests are encouraged not to bring bags, and the bag rule allows clear bags up to 12 by 6 by 12 inches or small bags up to 4.5 by 6.5 inches. Brightline trains run to Aventura Station with a free shuttle to the circuit, and rideshare uses off-site lots linked by free shuttles. Check the Miami Grand Prix FAQ before you go.
Austin: where to sit at Circuit of the Americas
Circuit of the Americas opened in 2012 as a permanent, purpose-built track. The Grand Prix layout is 3.426 miles with 20 turns and runs counterclockwise. Its signature feature is Turn 1, a sharp left-hander at the top of a climb from the start line with a gradient of more than 11 percent, named Big Red. The venue cites a total capacity of about 120,000, with about 9,000 in the Main Grandstand, and the race is contracted through 2034.
Grandstands
- Main Grandstand: on the start/finish straight, facing the pits and the grid.
- Turn 1: the most sought-after stand at COTA. You look down the hill as the whole field brakes into the corner, which is where the race often changes on lap one.
- Turn 4 and the esses: the fast, flowing section after Turn 1.
- Turn 12 and Turn 15: Turn 12 sits at the end of the long back straight, a heavy braking zone and a natural passing spot; Turn 15 is in the slower stadium section that follows.
General admission
COTA sells 3-day GA wristbands and single-day tickets. GA areas are spread around the circuit, so you can watch Turn 1 in the morning and the back straight in the afternoon. COTA's policy allows collapsible chairs, and collapsible wagons are permitted in GA areas, which helps on a long day.
The weekend
The United States Grand Prix doubles as a music festival, with a headline concert after the on-track action each day. For 2026 the circuit added a fourth day, Grand PrixView Thursday, with F1 Academy running and pit lane walks. Attendance peaked at nearly 270,000 for the 2016 weekend.
As of the 2026 event, COTA's motorsport policy limits bags to 12 by 12 by 20 inches, prohibits coolers and allows small hand-held umbrellas and collapsible chairs; re-entry is permitted. Shuttles run from Downtown Austin and the Travis County Expo Center, and parking passes are sold separately. Check COTA's venue policies for the current rules.
Las Vegas: where to watch on the Strip
The Las Vegas Strip Circuit is a 3.853-mile, 17-corner street circuit that runs counterclockwise. The pits and paddock sit in a permanent building on a former parking lot near Harmon Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard. From there the lap heads up Koval Lane, curls around the Sphere, runs along Sands Avenue and then turns south down the Strip on a flat-out stretch of about 1.2 miles past the Venetian, Caesars Palace, the Bellagio and the Cosmopolitan. Formula 1 and Las Vegas have agreed to keep the race through 2037.
The schedule is the reason this race is different. Sessions run at night: the 2025 race started at 8 p.m. local time on a Saturday, and the 2027 weekend runs Thursday, November 18, to Saturday, November 20, with practice first, qualifying next and the race on Saturday. Formula 1 notes that November temperatures can drop to around 50 degrees Fahrenheit after dark, so dress in layers even if the day was warm.
Choosing a viewing area
- Grandstands are reserved seats. A stand near the pit building sees the start, the pit stops and the finish; a stand on the Strip straight sees the cars at their fastest, at speeds above 220 mph by the end of the straight.
- General admission was sold as a collection of viewing platforms as of the 2024 event, rather than open lawns. On a street circuit lined with fences and barriers, expect a narrower view of the track than at Austin.
- Partner venues along the Strip sell their own viewing packages, and the Paddock Club is the top hospitality tier.
The Strip is the venue, so transportation is mostly on foot. Many hotels sit within walking distance of the grandstands, but track crossings and closed streets make short distances slow. Allow extra time, especially after the checkered flag.
What a Grand Prix weekend is actually like
A standard weekend has two practice sessions on Friday, a third practice and qualifying on Saturday, and the race on Sunday (shifted a day earlier in Las Vegas). Some weekends use the sprint format instead, with one practice session, sprint qualifying, a short Saturday sprint race and regular qualifying; for 2027, the sprint rounds announced do not include the three US races. Support series such as F1 Academy and Formula 2 fill the gaps.
A few practical points:
- Bring hearing protection. The cars are loud at close range, especially for children.
- Plan for walking. All three US venues cover large areas, and GA fans may walk several miles over a day.
- Use the big screens. From any one seat you see only a part of the lap, so pick a grandstand that faces a video board, and keep the timing app on your phone.
- Buy the weekend, not just Sunday, if you can. Friday and Saturday are less crowded, and qualifying often matters as much as the race.
Every GoodSeats order is backed by a 100% guarantee, which matters for a trip that involves flights and hotels booked months ahead.
Formula 1's history in America
The United States Grand Prix dates to 1908, when it ran as the American Grand Prize in Savannah, Georgia. It later became a world championship round and has moved among ten locations, including Watkins Glen, Phoenix and Indianapolis, before settling at COTA in 2012. The country has also hosted other rounds: the United States Grand Prix West at Long Beach from 1976 to 1983, the Detroit Grand Prix from 1982 to 1988, a one-off race in Dallas in 1984, and the Caesars Palace Grand Prix in Las Vegas in 1981 and 1982.
The modern Las Vegas race had a difficult start. In opening practice in 2023, a loose drain cover badly damaged Carlos Sainz's car, and fans were cleared from the circuit before the delayed second session ran in the early morning hours. Max Verstappen won that first race, George Russell won in 2024 and Verstappen won again in 2025. US television coverage moved to Apple in 2026 under a five-year deal, with ESPN holding the rights before that.
Frequently asked questions
