James Taylor on stage, in brief

James Taylor is the singer-songwriter and guitarist behind "Fire and Rain," "Sweet Baby James" and "Carolina in My Mind," and he remains an active touring artist into the 2020s. His concerts are seated, career-spanning evenings with a large backing band, played mostly in outdoor amphitheaters in summer and in arenas and concert halls the rest of the year. As of 2026, his summer schedule included his annual July 3 and 4 performances at Tanglewood in western Massachusetts.

Taylor was born in Boston in 1948, grew up in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and spent childhood summers on Martha's Vineyard. "Fire and Rain" reached No. 3, and his recording of Carole King's "You've Got a Friend" became his first No. 1 in 1971. His 1976 Greatest Hits album is certified Diamond, with 11 million US copies sold. He reached No. 1 on the album chart for the first time with Before This World in 2015, and American Standard (2020) won the Grammy for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album, one of his six Grammy wins. He entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015 and the Kennedy Center Honors in 2016.

What a James Taylor concert is like

Expect a relaxed, unhurried show built on the songs. Taylor tells stories between numbers, plays acoustic guitar for most of the night, and leans on a band of top session players and backing singers. His recent tours have been billed as an evening with James Taylor and his All-Star Band. Longtime backing vocalist Arnold McCuller is known for the soaring endings he adds to "Shower the People" and other songs.

The set moves across his whole career: early songs from the Sweet Baby James era, his covers of "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)" and "Handy Man," later material, and songs from American Standard. The crowd is attentive and usually seated for most of the night, with a standing finale common for the biggest songs. The pace and the seated crowd make it an easy concert to bring an older parent or a younger listener to.

Tours and stands to know

  • Summer amphitheater circuit (from the late 1980s): Taylor began touring regularly in this period, and summer outdoor shows have been the backbone of his schedule ever since.
  • One Man Band Tour (2000s): a three-year run in the US and Europe that paired Taylor with pianist Larry Goldings alone and became the 2007 album One Man Band.
  • Troubadour Reunion Tour (2010): with Carole King and members of his original band, including Russ Kunkel, Leland Sklar and Danny Kortchmar. It sold more than 700,000 tickets and moved Taylor into large NBA and NHL arenas.
  • 2026 US tour: announced January 13, 2026, with 30 shows from April 26 in Highland, California, to September 26 in Hollywood, Florida. Stops included the Santa Barbara Bowl, The Chelsea at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, Jones Beach, MGM Music Hall at Fenway and Wolf Trap, plus UK and European dates that summer.

When checked on October 1, 2026, his official site listed no further dates. The live event list on this page shows anything currently on sale.

Choosing seats: amphitheaters, arenas and Tanglewood

Because the show is about voice, guitar and harmony, sound and sightline matter more than being in the front row.

  • Amphitheaters: the covered reserved sections are the best choice for a quiet, detailed listen. Center sections a dozen or more rows back usually hear a better blend than the first few rows at the edge of the stage. The lawn (the open grass behind the reserved seats) is a picnic-style option that is pleasant on a warm night but far from the stage, so you will rely on the video screens and speakers.
  • Tanglewood: the venue's Koussevitzky Music Shed is a fan-shaped, open-sided pavilion with about 5,100 seats, and broad lawns spread out behind it. A Shed seat puts you inside the room with the band; the lawn is a Berkshires tradition for families with blankets and chairs, but the stage is barely visible from much of it. The July 3 and 4 dates are the most sought-after of his year.
  • Arenas: lower-level side sections near the stage are a better bet than deep floor rows, where everyone is on the same level and views are blocked by the people in front. If a listing offers seats beside or behind the stage, expect a partial or obstructed view.
  • Halls and theaters: center orchestra and the front of the first balcony give the best sound.

How his tickets usually sell

Taylor's audience tends to buy early, and the best reserved seats often go during presales. For the 2026 tour, presales ran through a free membership on his official site that fans had to set up again even if they had an older account, a detail worth knowing before the next announcement. Holiday-adjacent dates, especially the Independence Day stand at Tanglewood, and shows in New England and North Carolina, where he has deep roots, draw the most competition.

On the resale market, covered center seats at amphitheaters hold their value, while lawn tickets are plentiful and can soften close to the date, weather permitting. Many amphitheaters hold shows rain or shine, so check the venue policy; a lawn ticket on a stormy forecast is a real risk. GoodSeats orders include free shipping. Announcements appear first on his official site.
