Upcoming Moulin Rouge! The Musical dates

Dates and live ticket listings appear here as soon as they are on sale. The guide below covers what to know before you buy.

Is Moulin Rouge! The Musical still playing?

Not in North America, as of October 2026. The Broadway production played its final performance at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on August 30, 2026, after 24 previews and 2,297 regular performances, and the North American tour closed at the Citizens Opera House in Boston on August 2, 2026. The show continues in London's West End at the Piccadilly Theatre and on an international tour, with new productions announced for Hamburg, Sydney and Japan.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a jukebox musical (a show built from existing pop songs) adapted from Baz Luhrmann's 2001 film. In Paris in 1899, Christian, a young American songwriter, falls for Satine, the star of the Moulin Rouge cabaret, while the club's survival depends on keeping a wealthy, possessive duke happy. The score folds in songs written after the film, so the show mixes the film's "Your Song" and "Come What May" with more recent hits.

Creators, awards and the Broadway run

John Logan wrote the book, Alex Timbers directed and Sonya Tayeh choreographed. After a workshop in 2017, the show premiered at the Emerson Colonial Theatre in Boston on July 10, 2018, and opened on Broadway on July 25, 2019, with Aaron Tveit as Christian and Karen Olivo as Satine. The pandemic shutdown halted it in March 2020, and it reopened on September 24, 2021.

At the 2021 Tony Awards, which honored the 2019–20 season, it won 10 of its 14 nominations, including Best Musical, Best Actor in a Musical for Tveit, Best Featured Actor for Danny Burstein as Zidler, and Best Direction for Timbers, plus awards for choreography, orchestrations, and scenic, costume, lighting and sound design. According to the producers, it recouped its Broadway investment in late 2022, ranks as the 36th-longest-running show in Broadway history, and was seen by almost 3 million people there. Later Broadway casts included Tituss Burgess, Wayne Brady and Megan Thee Stallion as Zidler, and JoJo and Meg Donnelly as Satine.

Content notes and who it suits

Moulin Rouge! The Musical is written for teenagers and adults. The stage version makes the relationship between Satine and the Duke openly sexual, Satine is dying of consumption throughout, and in the final scenes Christian, drunk on absinthe, threatens to take his own life before Satine dies in his arms. The staging is loud and lavish, built to feel like a night at the club.

Each production publishes its own age guidance and running time, so check the specific London or tour listing before you bring anyone younger than a teenager. For adults who love the film, the stage version is less a copy than a remix: a different show-within-a-show, an American Christian and a more sympathetic Duke.

How to choose seats for this show

The producers describe each theater as transformed into the world of the club, so the design reaches beyond the stage picture. That shapes where to sit at any of its houses.

Center orchestra

The closest you get to the cabaret. The middle rows of the orchestra (the ground-level seating) put you inside the color and sound, close enough to see faces in the big ballads and the can-can.

Front mezzanine or dress circle, center

The best view of the choreography. The big numbers rely on patterns of dancers and on the lighting, which read best from a slightly raised angle. In London, this level is called the dress circle.

Where to be careful

  • Extreme sides: a wide set can cut off parts of the stage from the far ends of a row.
  • The very back of the top level: the spectacle survives, but the intimate scenes between Christian and Satine lose their force.

Demand after the Broadway closing

With Broadway and the North American tour both closed as of fall 2026, the listings for this show depend on where it is playing. The London production releases performances on a rolling basis, with one more week added each Monday, about five months ahead. Tour stops run for a few weeks at a time, so opening and closing weekends sell first, and Friday and Saturday evenings go before weekday performances.

A closed Broadway show can return on tour, in a regional production or in a new staging, and any such return would usually sell its best seats quickly. Every GoodSeats order is backed by a 100% guarantee.
