Dates and live ticket listings appear here as soon as they are on sale. The guide below covers what to know before you buy.

Washington's live-event lineup at a glance

Washington, D.C. fields teams in all five major North American leagues, and four of the five play inside the city limits. The Washington Capitals (NHL) and Washington Wizards (NBA) share Capital One Arena downtown; the Washington Nationals (MLB) play at Nationals Park in Navy Yard; D.C. United (MLS) and the Washington Spirit (NWSL) play at Audi Field at Buzzard Point; and the Washington Commanders (NFL) play at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland, just east of the city line.

Music and stage fill the gaps: The Anthem on the Southwest waterfront, the 9:30 Club on U Street, the historic Warner, National and Lincoln theaters downtown and on U Street, and two big summer amphitheaters in the suburbs. Most of it sits within a short walk of a Metrorail station, which makes Washington one of the easier big-league cities to do without a car.

  • Hockey and basketball: Capitals and Wizards, roughly October through April.
  • Baseball: Nationals, spring through early fall.
  • Soccer: D.C. United and the Spirit, spring through fall.
  • Football: Commanders, September into January.

Concerts in Washington, D.C.: which room for which show

The concert map in Washington runs from a downtown arena to standing-room clubs, with the summer amphitheaters outside the Beltway.

Arena and stadium shows

Capital One Arena (opened 1997 as MCI Center) hosts the largest indoor tours. It sits directly over the Gallery Place Metro station, a transfer point for the Red, Green and Yellow lines, which makes it the easiest arena exit in the region. The arena is in a multi-year renovation that, as of 2026, was expected to finish before the 2027–28 NHL and NBA seasons, so concourse routes and entrances may change from one visit to the next. Stadium tours use Nationals Park (listed at 41,373 for baseball) or Northwest Stadium in Landover.

Theaters and halls

The Anthem at 901 Wharf Street SW, on The Wharf waterfront, is a concert hall of about 6,000 that books both standing and seated shows; each listing states whether the floor is general admission or seated, and that detail changes what a floor ticket is worth. The Warner Theatre (opened 1924, reopened in 1992 after restoration) and the Lincoln Theatre (1922, at 1215 U Street on what was called "Washington's Black Broadway", reopened 1994) host concerts and other stage shows in seated, balconied rooms.

Clubs

The 9:30 Club at 815 V Street NW, open since 1980 and at its current address since 1996, is a standing-room club that Rolling Stone named among the 10 best live music venues in the country in 2018. The Wharf adds two smaller rooms, Union Stage and Pearl Street Warehouse. For "concerts tonight" in Washington, the clubs are the best bet for same-day tickets; arena shows and Anthem headliners usually sell through earlier.

Summer amphitheaters

Wolf Trap, the first national park for the performing arts, presents shows at its Filene Center (about 3,800 covered seats plus lawn space for about 3,200) from May to early September in Fairfax County, Virginia. Merriweather Post Pavilion, the Frank Gehry-designed amphitheater in Columbia, Maryland, opened in 1967. Both are drives or long transit trips from downtown; budget for traffic on weeknights.

Comedy shows in D.C.

Washington's comedy scene is anchored by one long-running club and a large improv community, with touring headliners in the downtown theaters.

  • DC Improv at 1140 Connecticut Avenue NW, near Dupont Circle and Farragut North, has presented stand-up downtown since 1992. It runs a main room plus a smaller lounge, so a weekend can carry a headliner in one room and a showcase in the other. Check the club's site for its age policy and any drink minimum before you go.
  • Washington Improv Theater stages improv comedy at the Studio Theatre, 1501 14th Street NW, in the Logan Circle area, alongside classes and workshops.
  • Touring headliners generally book seated rooms rather than clubs, so check the calendars of the Warner Theatre, the Lincoln Theatre and, for the largest names, Capital One Arena. In a balconied theater, the front of the first balcony often sees the stage as well as the middle of the orchestra.

Club shows at DC Improv rarely require buying far in advance on weeknights, but Friday and Saturday headliners can sell out. For a theater date, buy once the show is announced; a comic's single D.C. stop often carries the whole demand.

Arenas, ballparks and stadiums: where to sit

Capital One Arena

For a Capitals game, the lower bowl along the sides gives the clearest view of plays developing, and seats a few rows up see over the glass better than row 1. For the Wizards, the lower sidelines carry the premium, and the first rows of the upper level at center court are a reasonable value. The Capitals reached the Stanley Cup Final in 1998 and won the Cup in 2018; the Wizards franchise won the NBA title in 1978 as the Washington Bullets.

Nationals Park

The ballpark opened in 2008 on the Anacostia River, one block from the Navy Yard–Ballpark station on the Green Line. It has five seating levels: field, mezzanine, suite, gallery and upper gallery. The Washington Monument and the Capitol are visible from the upper decks on the first-base side, which makes those seats the scenic choice. The Nationals, who began as the Montreal Expos and moved to Washington for 2005, won the 2019 World Series.

Audi Field

The 20,000-capacity soccer stadium at Buzzard Point opened in 2018 and is home to D.C. United, the Washington Spirit, DC Power FC and the DC Defenders. It sits south of Nationals Park in the same Southwest waterfront area, and Navy Yard–Ballpark is the usual Metro station for both.

Northwest Stadium

The Commanders play in Landover, Maryland, about a mile from the Morgan Boulevard station on the Blue and Silver lines. The team plans to move to a new stadium on the RFK campus in the city, targeted for 2030.

Season calendar and the dates that sell first

  • Spring (March to May): Nationals Opening Day, the start of MLS and NWSL seasons, and the Capitals' and Wizards' playoff runs in years they qualify.
  • Summer (June to August): baseball most nights, Wolf Trap and Merriweather concerts, and the Fourth of July on the National Mall, which pulls huge crowds downtown and crowds the Metro.
  • Fall (September to November): Commanders home games, the start of hockey and basketball, and the heaviest touring season at The Anthem and the theaters.
  • Winter (December to February): Capitals and Wizards home games and holiday stage shows.

The Commanders' NFC East rivals (Dallas, Philadelphia and the New York Giants) draw the largest crowds and the most visiting fans. Weekend Capitals games against division rivals and Nationals weekend series in summer sell faster than midweek dates.

Getting around and where to stay near the venues

Metrorail is the default way to reach games and shows. Check WMATA's posted closing time for the day of your event, especially for late concerts, since Metro hours have changed several times since 2016.

  • Capital One Arena (Penn Quarter and Chinatown): the densest cluster of restaurants and hotels near any D.C. venue; you can walk to the Warner Theatre and the National Theatre, which sits on Pennsylvania Avenue three blocks from the White House.
  • Nationals Park and Audi Field (Navy Yard and Buzzard Point): waterfront restaurants and newer hotels; the Navy Yard–Ballpark station gets heavy use at the final out, so many fans wait out the crowd nearby.
  • The Anthem (The Wharf): waterfront dining and hotels on the Southwest waterfront; Waterfront and L'Enfant Plaza are the nearest Metro stations.
  • 9:30 Club and Lincoln Theatre (U Street): the U Street station is across the street from the Lincoln Theatre, beside Ben's Chili Bowl; the corridor is full of bars and late-night food.
  • DC Improv (Dupont Circle): Dupont Circle and Farragut North put hotels and dining within walking distance.
  • Northwest Stadium (Landover): most visitors stay in the city and ride Metro to Morgan Boulevard; tailgating lots open hours before kickoff for drivers with parking passes.

Tips for visitors planning a trip around an event

  • Watch the federal calendar. Inauguration years, major marches and the Fourth of July close streets downtown and change Metro service.
  • Check the Kennedy Center's schedule closely. Programming and operations at the Kennedy Center have been in flux since 2025, including resident companies relocating and a court fight over a planned closure, so confirm a performance is still on before you plan around it.
  • Check bag rules by venue. As of the 2025 season, Northwest Stadium allowed clear bags up to 12 by 6 by 12 inches, a one-gallon clear freezer bag, or a small clutch. Arena and theater rules differ; check each venue's current policy before you go, starting with the Northwest Stadium entry page for Commanders games.
  • Expect humid summers. Afternoon thunderstorms can delay ballgames and amphitheater shows from June through August.
  • Buy for the right date. Every GoodSeats order comes with guaranteed entry, but double-check the date and time, since day-night baseball doubleheaders and early weekend concerts are easy to mix up.

For transit planning, the WMATA site posts current Metrorail hours and track work.
