The Phillies' ballpark in South Philadelphia

Citizens Bank Park is the open-air home of the Philadelphia Phillies, a 42,901-seat ballpark at One Citizens Bank Way in the South Philadelphia sports complex. It opened on April 3, 2004, and is owned by the City of Philadelphia. Some ballpark guides list the capacity at 43,035; the figure has shifted slightly with renovations.

For most buyers the decisions are simple once you know three things: the third-base side is the shade side, the Phillies sit on the first-base side, and the subway drops you about seven minutes from the gates.

  • Phillies games: the MLB regular season runs from late March or early April into late September, with postseason games in October when the team qualifies.
  • Other events: the park hosted the 2012 NHL Winter Classic, and it was selected to host the 2026 MLB All-Star Game.

Seating chart and layout: levels and section numbers

The seating layout follows a classic three-deck design: a lower deck, a suite level and an upper deck, with outfield seating wrapped around Ashburn Alley. Sections are numbered by level, so the first digit tells you the deck.

  • 100 level (lower deck): the field-level seats. Section 122 sits directly behind home plate, and sections 119 to 128 form the backstop arc behind the premium Diamond Club seats. Numbers run from the first-base side toward the third-base side.
  • Infield lower bowl: roughly sections 108 to 117 on the first-base side and 130 to 139 on the third-base side.
  • 200 level: the suite and club level, including the Hall of Fame Club. The 200 level also reaches the outfield, with sections 201 to 205 in right field and 241 to 245 in left.
  • 300 and 400 levels: the upper deck. A break in the upper deck along the first-base side pulls those seats a little closer to the field than a continuous ring would.
  • Outfield extras: nearly 400 rooftop bleacher seats above the outfield pavilion, plus seats behind the left-field fence.

Section numbers here are drawn from seating guides and should be confirmed against the seat map on any listing before you buy.

Best seats for a Phillies game, and seats to skip

According to seating guides, the Phillies dugout sits behind sections 115 to 118 on the first-base side, and the visitors dugout sits behind sections 129 to 132 on the third-base side. Those sections draw the most demand on the lower deck after the home-plate wedge.

  • Best overall view: sections 119 to 128, rows in the middle of the section. Rows 30 and above in section 122 sit under the overhang, which buys shade and rain cover at the cost of some sky.
  • Best for shade: anything on the third-base line for a 4:05 start, and the back rows of the 200 level, which are covered.
  • Best value: the upper deck between the bases. The 300 and 400 levels behind home plate see the whole field and the skyline beyond the outfield.
  • Best for families: outfield seats near Ashburn Alley, home to The Yard, a 13,000-square-foot kids area.

Seats to think twice about: right-field sections 201 to 205 and 301 to 305 and left-field sections 241 to 245 are the sunniest in the building for an early-afternoon game. The deep first-base and right-field corner stays in the sun at evening games until dusk. Netting runs in front of roughly sections 115 to 132, so front-row fans hoping for foul balls should sit beyond the dugouts.

Sun, shade and what you see from each level

The park faces north. The sun rises over right field, crosses behind home plate at midday and sets toward the left-field corner, so the third-base side is the shade side for most of the day.

  • 1:05 and 1:35 starts: little natural shade. Sit high behind home plate or on the third-base side, which shades first.
  • 4:05 starts: nearly any third-base seat is shaded.
  • Evening starts: left field and the third-base line are shaded; right field and the first-base line catch late sun.

The lower deck puts you at field level with the pitch counts and the dugout chatter. The 200 level is the comfortable middle, with shorter sections and club access. The upper deck trades distance for the downtown skyline over the outfield, which is the view many visitors come for.

Getting there: SEPTA, parking and tailgating

SEPTA: the Broad Street Line is the easiest way in. NRG Station at Broad Street and Pattison Avenue is about a seven-minute walk from the ballpark, and SEPTA bus routes 4 and 17 also serve the complex. Trains are crowded right after the final out, so waiting ten minutes at a concourse stand often costs nothing in arrival time.

Parking: the sports complex lots surround the ballpark and are shared with the other venues in the complex. As of the 2026 season, all Phillies parking is cashless (card or mobile pay), and passes are delivered through the MLB Ballpark app. Buying a pass in advance is the safer choice on weekends and on days when another venue in the complex has an event.

Tailgating: as of the 2026 season, tailgating is permitted only in lots A through H and M through O, and those lots open five hours before first pitch. Check the team's parking page for the current lot map before you go.

Gates and bag policy (as of the 2026 season)

As of the 2026 season, Citizens Bank Park uses a clear-bag policy. Each guest may bring:

  • a clear bag no larger than 12 by 6 by 12 inches, or
  • a clutch purse or fanny pack no larger than 5 by 7 inches, and
  • medical and diaper bags, after inspection.

Non-clear bags, including backpacks and drawstring bags, are not allowed. Lockers are available on site for a fee if you arrive with a bag that does not comply. Outside alcohol is not permitted; unopened plastic bottles of non-alcoholic drinks are allowed, while glass, cans and coolers are not.

Entry is through the First Base, Third Base and Left Field gates. On weekdays the Third Base and Left Field gates open two hours before first pitch for partial access, with all gates open 90 minutes before. On weekends the early window stretches to two and a half hours. Policies change, so check the Phillies guest code of conduct before you go.

Food, Ashburn Alley and a short history

Ashburn Alley, the 625-foot outfield concourse named for Hall of Famer Richie Ashburn, is the social center of the park: food stands, statues of Ashburn, Robin Roberts, Mike Schmidt and Steve Carlton, and a view down into the split-level bullpens in right-center field. Concessions are largely cashless. A 50-foot Liberty Bell replica in right-center swings and lights up after every Phillies home run.

Ground was broken on June 28, 2001, and the park was designed by EwingCole with HOK Sport. The park hosted the 2008 World Series, which the Phillies won over the Tampa Bay Rays, Roy Halladay threw a postseason no-hitter on October 6, 2010, and the PhanaVision video board was replaced with a 152-by-86-foot 4K display in 2023.
