The Sixers: Syracuse roots, three titles

The Philadelphia 76ers play their home games at Xfinity Mobile Arena in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex, with a regular season from October to mid-April and playoffs from April into June. The team plays in the Eastern Conference's Atlantic Division.

The franchise began as the Syracuse Nationals, playing in the NBL from 1946 and joining the NBA in 1949. It won the 1955 title in Syracuse and moved to Philadelphia in 1963, taking a name that honors the 1776 signing of the Declaration of Independence. Fans and local media almost always call the team the Sixers.

Philadelphia has won two championships since the move. Wilt Chamberlain led the 1967 team. In 1983, Moses Malone famously predicted a playoff run of "fo', fo', fo'" sweeps; the Sixers went "fo', fi', fo'" and won the title. Julius Erving (Dr. J) was the other star of that era, and Allen Iverson carried the 2001 team to the Finals. The team's most discussed modern chapter is "Trust the Process," the 2013–2016 rebuild under general manager Sam Hinkie that collected high draft picks, including Joel Embiid.

Xfinity Mobile Arena: names, levels and layout

The arena opened in 1996 at 3601 South Broad Street, next to Lincoln Financial Field and Citizens Bank Park. Its naming history is long: CoreStates Center, First Union Center, Wachovia Center, Wells Fargo Center from 2010 to 2025, and Xfinity Mobile Arena since 2025. Many fans still use the older names, so expect to hear them. The arena seats 20,478 for basketball, among the larger capacities in the league, and it is shared with the Flyers of the NHL.

  • The lower level (sections 101–124) wraps the court, with courtside floor seats in front.
  • The club level sits between the bowls, with club boxes and suites. The arena lists 126 suites and 1,880 club-box seats.
  • The mezzanine (sections 201–224, plus several A sections) is the upper level.

Section ranges follow published fan seat-view maps; check the seat map for your game.

Best seats for a Sixers game

Courtside and the lowest rows

Courtside seats are on the floor. They deliver closeness and a view of the players up close, not the best perspective on the game. For a cleaner look at offensive sets, a middle row of a center-court lower-level section is a better seat.

Lower level sideline and corners

Center-court sections in the 100 level are the premium choice and hold value for every opponent. Corner sections are the value pick within the lower bowl: you are still close, and the diagonal angle shows both ends of the floor. Seats behind the baskets are cheaper, but the backboard sits in your line of sight when play is at your end; choose higher rows there.

Club level

The club seats sit at a strong height for basketball and include club access, which matters on cold winter nights when you want to spend halftime indoors.

Mezzanine

The 200 level is where most Philadelphia fans watch, and it can be loud. The front rows along the sidelines are the best value in the building. Because the arena is large, the top rows at the ends are far from the court; skip them if you want to follow detail.

Sixers demand: rivals, holidays and the playoffs

The NBA calendar is consistent: October preseason games, an 82-game regular season (41 home games) from October to mid-April, NBA Cup games in November and December, a play-in tournament in mid-April, and best-of-seven playoff series from April through June.

  • The Boston Celtics: the oldest rivalry on the schedule, with decades of playoff meetings, and the hardest regular-season ticket in most years.
  • The New York Knicks: the short trip from New York brings Knicks fans in large numbers, and the crowd can split.
  • Star opponents and holiday dates: visiting national stars and games around the winter holidays draw more buyers.
  • Playoff games: postseason dates are set on short notice and sell quickly.

Weeknight games against Western Conference teams without a headline star are usually the easiest to buy. Injury news moves the Sixers resale market more than most, so confirm who is expected to play before paying a premium for a matchup.

Getting to South Philadelphia: subway, parking and timing

The simplest way to the game is SEPTA's Broad Street Line. Ride south to NRG station at the end of the line, and the arena is a short walk away. The arena itself calls the Broad Street Line the best route to Sports Complex events, and it avoids the traffic that builds on I-95 and Broad Street before tipoff.

If you drive, the Sports Complex lots surround the arena. As of the team's current FAQ, arena lots no longer accept cash, and buying parking in advance is recommended. When the Flyers, Eagles or Phillies are also in action, traffic and parking get much tighter, so check the Sports Complex calendar for your date.

Plan your route on SEPTA's site, and allow extra time for the post-game rush on the subway platform.

Inside the arena: bags, cashless rules and mobile tickets

As of the arena's current guest services page, small clutches and purses under 4.5 by 6.5 inches skip X-ray screening. Bags up to 14 by 14 by 6 inches are allowed after X-ray at the Broad Street, 11th Street and premium entrances. Backpacks and large multi-compartment bags are prohibited, and paid lockers on the 11th Street side take credit cards only. Check the arena's current policy before you go.

The building is cashless; reverse ATMs convert cash to a prepaid card. Re-entry after your ticket is scanned is generally not allowed. The team's FAQ says screenshots of mobile tickets are not accepted, so load the actual ticket in your app or wallet before you leave home. Every GoodSeats order is backed by a 100% guarantee.

A new arena on the horizon

The Sixers' arena future changed in January 2025. The team's owner, Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment, and Comcast Spectacor announced plans for a new arena in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex, targeted to open by 2031 or sooner, and dropped the earlier 76 Place proposal on East Market Street. Until then, Xfinity Mobile Arena remains home, and the team's long history, from the Spectrum era to Iverson's 2001 run, keeps South Philadelphia at the center of the city's basketball identity.
