The Flyers in brief: Broad Street Bullies and two Cups
The Philadelphia Flyers play home games at Xfinity Mobile Arena in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex, with a regular season that now starts in late September and runs to mid-April, followed by the Stanley Cup playoffs into June. The team plays in the NHL's Eastern Conference, Metropolitan Division.
Philadelphia joined the league in the 1967 expansion, the six-team wave that doubled the NHL. Within seven seasons it became the first of those expansion clubs to win the Stanley Cup, taking titles in 1974 and 1975. Those teams, built around captain Bobby Clarke and goaltender Bernie Parent, played a physical style that earned the nickname the Broad Street Bullies, and the label still defines how the city thinks about its hockey team.
The franchise has reached the Stanley Cup Final eight times, losing in 1976, 1980, 1985, 1987, 1997 and 2010 after its two wins. Two records stand out. In the 1979–80 season the Flyers went 35 straight games without a loss (25 wins and 10 ties), and in the 2010 playoffs they came back from a 3–0 series deficit against Boston, winning Game 7 after trailing 3–0 in that game too. The team is owned by Comcast Spectacor, and since 2018 its mascot has been Gritty, the orange creature who became an internet celebrity within days of his debut.
Xfinity Mobile Arena: levels and names
The arena opened on August 12, 1996, beside the site of the old Spectrum, which was the Flyers' home from 1967 to 1996. It sits at 3601 South Broad Street, next to Lincoln Financial Field and Citizens Bank Park. It has carried five names: CoreStates Center, First Union Center, Wachovia Center, Wells Fargo Center from 2010 to 2025, and Xfinity Mobile Arena since 2025. Many fans and some maps still use the older names, so expect to see Wells Fargo Center on older listings.
For hockey the arena seats 19,173, with standing room pushing attendance to about 20,000; the building's record, 20,327, was set at Game 6 of the 2010 Stanley Cup Final. The seating bowl is shared with the Philadelphia 76ers, and section numbering is the same for both teams:
- The lower level (sections 101–124) wraps the rink, with the glass rows at the front.
- The club level sits between the bowls, with club boxes and suites (the arena lists 126 suites and 1,880 club-box seats).
- The upper level (sections 201–224) is the mezzanine, the largest and most affordable tier.
Section ranges come from the arena's published layout as summarized by seating guides; confirm a specific section on the seat map at checkout.
Where to sit for a Flyers game
Center ice
Center-ice sections on the sides of the lower level are the premium hockey seat: the play moves left and right in front of you, and the rows from roughly the 10th row up see over the glass and the benches. The benches and penalty boxes sit along the sides, so seats directly behind them trade some view for proximity to the players.
The attack-twice end
NHL teams switch ends after each period, so the home team attacks one end in the first and third periods. Seats behind that net see the Flyers shoot for two of the three periods. The end does not appear on most seat maps; check the team's seating chart or an arena seat-view guide before you buy end seats.
The glass
Glass seats (the first row against the boards) deliver the sound of the game and the hits on the boards, not the best view of plays at the far end. In the corners the curved glass distorts what you see. Rows 8 to 15 on the sides are the better compromise between closeness and sightline.
Upper level value
The 200 level is steep enough that the view is clear, and hockey reads well from above because you can see passing lanes and line changes develop. Center-ice sections of the upper level are the value pick; the end sections behind the nets are the least expensive seats in the building and the hardest place to judge depth on plays at the far end.
Schedule shape and the games that sell first
Starting in 2026–27, NHL teams play an 84-game regular season, 42 at home, with a four-game preseason in September. The 2026–27 regular season runs from September 29, 2026, to April 10, 2027, and the playoffs follow from April into June. Demand for Flyers home games follows the opponent and the calendar:
- The Pittsburgh Penguins: the Battle of Pennsylvania, a rivalry that began with the first game ever played at the Spectrum on October 19, 1967. The teams have met eight times in the playoffs, from 1989 through 2026, and Penguins fans make the trip across the state.
- The New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils: division rivals a short train ride away, so visiting fans fill a meaningful share of the building.
- Weekend and holiday dates: Saturday nights and the games around the winter holidays draw families and out-of-town visitors.
- Playoff games: the highest demand of the year, with prices moving quickly after each result.
Weeknight games against Western Conference opponents usually offer the widest choice of seats. Prices on the resale market tend to soften as puck drop approaches for low-demand games and firm up for rivalry dates.
Getting to South Philadelphia
The simplest route is SEPTA's Broad Street Line south to NRG station, the end of the line, a short walk from the arena. The subway avoids the traffic that builds on I-95 and Broad Street before games, and it runs straight down Broad Street from Center City.
If you drive, the Sports Complex lots surround the arena. As of the arena tenants' current FAQ, the Sports Complex lots no longer accept cash, and buying parking in advance is recommended. When the Eagles, Phillies or 76ers are also in action on the same day, traffic and parking get much tighter, so check the Sports Complex calendar before you leave.
Flyers fans travel well to nearby road games. The Penguins, Rangers, Devils and Islanders are all within a drive or a train ride, and Flyers jerseys are common in those buildings.
Inside the arena: bags, cashless rules and entry
As of the arena's current guest services page, small clutches and purses under 4.5 by 6.5 inches skip X-ray screening, and bags up to 14 by 14 by 6 inches are allowed after X-ray at the Broad Street, 11th Street and premium entrances. Backpacks are prohibited. The building is cashless, with reverse ATMs that convert cash to a prepaid card, and re-entry is generally not permitted. Check the arena's guest services page for the current policy before you go.
Tickets are mobile. Load them into the team app or your phone's wallet before you reach the gate, since screenshots are not accepted. Every order placed through GoodSeats is backed by a 100% guarantee.
History, outdoor games and a new arena ahead
The Flyers have hosted two outdoor games in Philadelphia: the 2012 Winter Classic against the Rangers at Citizens Bank Park, before 46,967 fans, and the 2019 Stadium Series against Pittsburgh at Lincoln Financial Field, a 4–3 overtime win in front of 69,620. The team also played a 2021 outdoor game at Lake Tahoe and visited MetLife Stadium for the 2024 Stadium Series against the Devils.
For decades the Flyers played Kate Smith's recording of "God Bless America" before big games, a tradition tied to the Cup era; the team dropped the recording in 2019. The arena itself has a defined end date. In January 2025, Comcast Spectacor, Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment and the City of Philadelphia announced a privately financed replacement arena in the Sports Complex. Reports at the time gave an opening target of 2030 or 2031, so treat the timeline as tentative. Until then, Xfinity Mobile Arena remains home.
