The Yankees in brief: 27 titles and a century in the Bronx

The New York Yankees play home games at Yankee Stadium, 1 East 161st Street in the Bronx, from late March or early April through late September, with postseason games in October. The franchise traces to the 1901–1902 Baltimore Orioles, moved to New York in 1903 as the Highlanders and became officially known as the Yankees in 1913.

No MLB team has won more. The Yankees hold records for 27 World Series titles, the most recent in 2009, 41 American League pennants and 21 AL East titles.

  • Ballparks: Hilltop Park (1903–1912), the Polo Grounds (1913–1922), the original Yankee Stadium (1923–1973 and 1976–2008), Shea Stadium during renovation (1974–1975) and the current Yankee Stadium (2009 to the present).
  • Hall of Famers: Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera, among many others.
  • Rivalries: the Boston Red Sox, the most famous rivalry in the sport, and the Mets in the Subway Series.

Where to sit at Yankee Stadium for a Yankees game

Yankee Stadium seats 46,537, according to Wikipedia, down from about 52,325 when it opened, because the club installed wider seats. The seating runs in four main tiers: the Field Level (the 100s, with the Legends Suite seats behind home plate), the Main Level (the 200s), the Terrace Level (the 300s) and the Grandstand (the 400s), plus the outfield bleachers.

The dugouts and the Legends seats

The Yankees dugout is on the first base side, and the visitors use the third base side. The Legends Suite seats, the first eight rows of the lower bowl around home plate, are among the most expensive seats in sports and include club access. The Field Level sections just beyond the dugouts give much of the same closeness for less.

The Main Level

The 200 level hangs over the Field Level, so the back rows of the field sections lose some view of high fly balls. The Main Level itself is a strong choice: high enough to see the whole field and, in its back rows, under cover from sun and rain.

The Terrace and Grandstand

The 300 level is exposed to the sun and costs less than the 200s. The Grandstand is the highest and usually the least expensive tier; the back rows (about row 6 and up) sit under the cantilevered roof, which makes them the value pick on a hot afternoon. Sections 407A and 433 are alcohol-free, according to NYC Sports Wire and TickPick.

The bleachers

The bleachers run from sections 201–204 in right field to 235–239 in left. Section 203 is home to the Bleacher Creatures, who chant each Yankees starter's name in the roll call during the top of the first inning, and the regulars expect you to join in. The bleachers are fully exposed to the sun and some of the loudest seats in the park, so they suit fans who want atmosphere over comfort.

Shade, sun and covered rows in the Bronx

Yankee Stadium is open air. According to Rate Your Seats:

  • Covered seats: the back rows (about row 16 and up) of the Main Level infield and rows 6 and up in the Grandstand sit under the roof.
  • The first base side falls into shade earlier in the day, which puts the Yankees dugout side ahead for comfort as well as for proximity.
  • Right field faces west and takes late-day sun.
  • The Terrace Level is among the most exposed areas in the stadium.

For a 1 p.m. start, most covered seats stay shaded until around the sixth inning. For a night game the sun matters only early, but a cool April evening in the shaded upper rows can be cold, so bring a layer.

The schedule and the Yankees games that sell first

Each MLB team plays 162 regular-season games, 81 at home. Spring training runs in February and March, the regular season starts in late March or early April and ends in late September, and the All-Star break falls in mid-July. Twelve teams reach the postseason. Since 2023 MLB has used a balanced schedule in which every team plays every other team, and the Yankees meet each AL East rival 13 times.

  • Red Sox series are the highest-demand regular-season games, with Boston fans traveling well to the Bronx.
  • The Subway Series against the Mets fills the stadium with both fan bases.
  • Opening Day and summer weekends sell well ahead.
  • Weeknight games in April and September against non-rivals are usually the easiest tickets to find.
  • Postseason games draw the most demand of all; the stadium hosted World Series games in 2009, when the Yankees beat Philadelphia, and in 2024, when they lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

On the resale market, the opponent and the day of the week move prices more than almost anything else.

Getting to Yankee Stadium and gameday rules

Most fans arrive by subway. The 161st Street–Yankee Stadium station is served by the 4 train at all times, the D train and the B train on weekdays. Metro-North's Yankees–East 153rd Street station, opened in 2009, serves the Hudson Line, with game-day service to and from Grand Central; connections from the Harlem and New Haven lines are more limited. Game-day traffic around the stadium is heavy, so transit is usually the better choice.

As of the 2026 season, according to the Yankees ballpark policies:

  • Bags: one soft-sided bag no larger than 16 by 16 by 8 inches, plus one smaller soft-sided personal item. Hard-sided bags are prohibited, and the stadium has no bag storage.
  • Water: sealed plastic water bottles up to 1 liter and empty reusable bottles up to 24 ounces are allowed.
  • Re-entry: not allowed.
  • Not allowed: cans, glass, large umbrellas and selfie sticks.

The ballpark and moments that define the franchise

The current Yankee Stadium opened on April 16, 2009, across 161st Street from the original. It reproduces the original's frieze along the roofline, has a Great Hall concourse inside the main gates and moved Monument Park, the team's collection of plaques and retired numbers, to center field. In 2016 and 2017 the club replaced obstructed bleacher sections in the outfield with open terraces. The stadium also hosts New York City FC on an interim basis and has hosted the Pinstripe Bowl since 2010.

The franchise's history runs from Ruth and Gehrig to DiMaggio and Mantle. The 1998 team finished 114–48, then an AL record for wins, and the club won four World Series in five seasons from 1996 through 2000, the last over the Mets. The 2009 title came in the new stadium's first season.
