Who LCD Soundsystem is and how the band plays live
LCD Soundsystem is the Brooklyn dance-punk band James Murphy founded in 2002, alongside his work as a co-founder of DFA Records. Live, it is a six-piece band playing long, propulsive sets built for dancing, and in recent years it has favored multi-night residencies in mid-size halls over traditional one-night tours. For most fans, the ticket that matters is a spot on the floor.
The band's four studio albums are LCD Soundsystem (2005), Sound of Silver (2007), This Is Happening (2010), its first US top-ten album, and American Dream (2017), its first number one in the US. "Tonite" won the Grammy for Best Dance Recording at the 2018 ceremony. Early single "Losing My Edge" remains a signature song, and "All My Friends" and "New York, I Love You but You're Bringing Me Down" are among the songs fans most want to hear.
What a show feels like
The live lineup is James Murphy (vocals and various instruments), Nancy Whang (synthesizer, keyboards and vocals), Pat Mahoney (drums), Tyler Pope (bass, guitar and synthesizer), Al Doyle (guitar, synthesizer and percussion) and Korey Richey (synthesizer, piano and percussion). Songs stretch out, grooves build over several minutes, and the crowd dances for most of the night.
The sound matters as much as the sight lines. The band's habit of booking mid-size rooms for residencies keeps the sound close and physical. The production is modest compared with arena pop, so being able to see the stage up close is less important than being somewhere with room to move and a good mix.
Residencies, reunions and tours, dated
LCD Soundsystem's live history is unusual: a farewell, a reunion and a steady run of residencies. The milestones below come from the sources for this page; current dates appear in the live event list.
- Farewell at Madison Square Garden (April 2, 2011): after announcing a breakup in February 2011, the band played a farewell show at the Garden, later documented in the film Shut Up and Play the Hits.
- Reunion (December 2015 to 2016): the band returned with "Christmas Will Break Your Heart," then headlined Coachella in 2016 and played festivals including Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, Primavera Sound, Austin City Limits and Bonnaroo.
- Brooklyn Steel residency (late November to late December 2021): 20 dates that ended a pandemic-era hiatus.
- 2022 residencies: runs that included four nights at Franklin Music Hall in Philadelphia in March 2022, plus Boston, London's O2 Academy Brixton and the San Francisco Bay Area.
- New York winter runs: the 12-show Tri Boro Tour across New York City in November and December 2023, then 12 dates at the Knockdown Center in November and December 2024.
- Brixton Academy residency (June 2025): eight nights in London.
- 2026 tour: a run through the United States and Canada with Brooklyn indie-pop band Victoryland.
Where to stand or sit
LCD Soundsystem's residencies have used halls such as Brooklyn Steel, the Knockdown Center and Brixton Academy, which are largely general admission (the main floor is standing room, first come, first served), with balcony or mezzanine seats in some rooms. At festivals and larger venues, the setup follows the venue. Check the seating map on each event to see whether a ticket is GA floor or a reserved seat.
- Middle of the GA floor: the sweet spot for most fans. It is close enough to see the band, has room to dance and usually sits in front of the soundboard, where the mix is best.
- Front rail: the closest view, but it requires an early arrival and is the most crowded part of the room for the whole set.
- Back of the floor: more space and easier access to bars and exits. The sound is still strong in a well-tuned hall.
- Balcony or mezzanine seats: the choice for anyone who wants a guaranteed seat and an overhead view of the band and crowd. Front-row balcony seats are the best of these.
For arena or festival dates, a lower-level seat facing the stage is the best reserved option, and the floor follows the same logic as a GA hall.
How demand for LCD Soundsystem tickets behaves
Residencies change how demand works. A run of many nights in one hall spreads the audience out, but each night has relatively few tickets because the rooms are small.
- Opening and closing nights draw the most. The first and last shows of a residency, and weekend nights in the middle, tend to sell out first.
- Midweek nights are the opportunity. Tuesday and Wednesday shows in a long run often hold inventory longer.
- Hometown shows are the hottest. New York residencies sit at the center of the band's identity and attract fans from out of town.
- Infrequent new releases raise the stakes. With a new album in progress but not released, many fans treat each run as a rare chance to see the band.
Resale prices can sit above or below face value and usually move as each night approaches. Every order on GoodSeats is backed by a 100% guarantee. For the band's own listings, see the LCD Soundsystem official site.
