Dates and live ticket listings appear here as soon as they are on sale. The guide below covers what to know before you buy.

What the Alamo Bowl is and who plays in it

The Alamo Bowl is an annual college football bowl game played at the Alamodome in downtown San Antonio, usually in the final days of December. The 2026 game is scheduled for Tuesday, December 29, 2026, at 8 p.m. Central on ESPN. It is formally the Valero Alamo Bowl, after its title sponsor, the San Antonio refiner Valero Energy.

The matchup comes from conference tie-ins (contracts that reserve a bowl slot for a conference's teams). For more than a decade the bowl has paired a Big 12 team with a Pac-12 team. After the Pac-12's breakup, the bowl extended its selection rights through the 2026 season with two pools of 12 schools each: a Big 12 pool and a Pac-12/legacy Pac-12 pool that includes former Pac-12 members such as USC and Colorado. The bowl takes the first available team from each pool after the College Football Playoff field is set, which makes it one of the higher-profile games outside the playoff.

Treat the tie-ins as a moving target. Bowl leadership has said publicly that after 2026 it wants flexibility to draw from a broader pool of teams, and conference agreements beyond that season were still under discussion as of fall 2026.

The Alamodome and where to sit

The Alamodome opened in May 1993, the same year as the first Alamo Bowl, and is owned by the City of San Antonio. It is a domed, climate-controlled stadium of five levels, seating about 64,000 for football and expandable to about 72,000. UTSA (the University of Texas at San Antonio) plays its home games here, and the building has hosted multiple NCAA men's and women's Final Fours. Because the game is indoors, December weather does not factor into seat choice: no sun side, no wind and no rain.

Seat judgment for this game

  • Lower-level sideline seats (the 100-level sections between the 20-yard lines) are the best all-around choice and the first to see demand when two well-traveled fan bases are matched.
  • Middle rows of the lower level usually beat the first few rows, which sit at field height behind the team benches and sideline personnel.
  • Club and upper sideline seats trade closeness for a full view of formations, which suits fans who want to follow the game rather than the crowd.
  • Lower-level end zone seats are a reasonable value for watching scoring plays at one end, but depth perception for action at the far end is poor.
  • The highest rows of the upper level are the budget choice. The dome keeps sound in, but the view is distant.

Fans of each school tend to cluster on the side their team occupies. Once the matchup is announced, buying near your own school's fans usually makes for a better night than a slightly closer seat among the opponent's supporters.

Bowl week in San Antonio

The Alamo Bowl runs a full slate of events in the days before the game. The 2026 calendar published by the bowl lists:

  • Ricos River Rally on December 27, a fan rally tied to the River Walk.
  • A Kickoff Luncheon on December 28.
  • Tailgate Town from 9 a.m. on game day, plus a Fan Zone and a pregame party in the late afternoon before the 8 p.m. kickoff.

Tailgating at the Alamodome is allowed only for UTSA games and the Alamo Bowl, and only with permits. The stadium's posted rules allow charcoal, wood and propane grills but no glass, no deep fryers and no pets other than service animals, and tents must be weighted down. Rules can change, so check the stadium's current tailgating page before you pack.

The prime-time kickoff gives visitors most of the day for the River Walk, the Alamo mission and Hemisfair, all within walking distance or a short ride of the stadium.

How Alamo Bowl ticket demand works

Demand for this bowl depends almost entirely on the matchup, which is not known until early December. Three factors move resale prices the most:

  • Distance. A Big 12 school from Texas or a neighboring state brings a large drive-in crowd, while a West Coast opponent tends to send a smaller traveling group.
  • Brand and ranking. Programs with national followings and ranked teams fill the lower bowl quickly.
  • The calendar. The game falls between Christmas and New Year's, when many fans are already traveling, so hotel availability downtown tightens with the matchup.

Prices for the best lower-level sideline seats usually climb in the first days after the matchup is announced. Upper-level and end zone seats tend to hold steadier, and some softening is common close to kickoff when a fan base travels poorly. Every GoodSeats order is backed by a 100% guarantee.

History, notable games and sponsors

The first Alamo Bowl was played in 1993, and the Alamodome reports about 1.93 million fans across the first 33 editions. The title sponsor has changed several times:

  • Builders Square from 1993 to 1998.
  • Sylvania from 1999 to 2001.
  • MasterCard from 2002 to 2005.
  • Valero from 2007 to the present.

The record crowd of 66,166 watched Penn State play Texas A&M in 2007. The 2005 game between Nebraska and Michigan ended on a chaotic multiple-lateral kickoff return that drew comparisons to Cal's famous "The Play." The 2006 game between Texas and Iowa set an ESPN viewership record at the time for a college football game. In the 2011 game, Baylor beat Washington 67–56, a combined 123 points that remains the most in bowl history. TCU's 47–41 triple-overtime win over Oregon in January 2016 set a peak audience mark for the bowl, and in the 2025 game TCU beat USC 30–27 in overtime.

Getting to the Alamodome

The Alamodome sits on the southeastern edge of downtown at 100 Montana Street, beside I-37. Many visitors stay downtown and walk, which avoids game-night parking entirely.

  • Parking: Lot A is reached from the northbound I-37 access road, and Lots B and C from southbound Cherry Street. The stadium also sells off-site parking in advance through ParkWhiz.
  • Rideshare: The taxi and rideshare zone is in Lot D at 500 Tower of Americas Way, with a walkway to the security checkpoint.
  • Transit: VIA Metropolitan Transit runs Park & Ride service for major Alamodome events; check VIA's event page for the bowl.

As of 2026, the Alamodome enforces a clear-bag policy: clear plastic bags or backpacks up to 12 by 6 by 12 inches, a one-gallon clear storage bag, or a small bag or clutch no larger than 5.5 by 8.5 inches. Check the Alamodome's current bag policy before you go.
