Three kinds of volleyball, three calendars

Volleyball tickets in the United States fall into three groups, each with its own season. Women's professional indoor volleyball runs from January into spring in two leagues, League One Volleyball and Major League Volleyball. NCAA women's volleyball runs from late August through the national championship in December. Beach volleyball, led by the AVP, is a summer event played on sand courts in temporary stadiums.

All three share the same basic sport: six players a side indoors, two a side on the sand. What differs is the venue, the crowd and how the tickets are sold, which is what decides the experience.

The pro leagues: LOVB and Major League Volleyball

League One Volleyball (LOVB)

LOVB began as a network of youth clubs and launched its pro league in 2025 with six teams: Atlanta, Austin, Houston, Madison, Omaha (renamed Nebraska in 2026) and Salt Lake City. LOVB Austin won the first two championships, in 2025 and 2026. The 2026 season grew to 20 matches per team, with semifinals in Louisville and the championship in Long Beach, California. Four expansion teams, Los Angeles, Minnesota, San Francisco and Miami, are scheduled to join in 2027.

Major League Volleyball (MLV)

In August 2025, the Pro Volleyball Federation, which had played two seasons, merged with Major League Volleyball, and the combined league kept the MLV name. Its 2026 season, counted as its third, began in January with eight teams in Atlanta, Columbus, Dallas, Grand Rapids, Indianapolis, Omaha, Orlando and San Diego. Teams in Northern California and Washington, D.C., are planned for 2027.

Both leagues are young, and team names, venues and cities have changed from season to season, so check the team's own site for the current home arena.

College volleyball and the NCAA Final Four

College volleyball has become one of the strongest draws in women's sports. On August 30, 2023, Nebraska hosted Omaha at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln before 92,003 fans, the largest crowd ever recorded at a women's sporting event in the United States. In its regular arena, the Bob Devaney Sports Center, Nebraska has a home sellout streak dating to 2001, the longest in collegiate women's sports.

The NCAA Division I tournament takes 64 teams in December and finishes with a Final Four in a neutral arena. Texas A&M won the 2025 title over Kentucky at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, the 2026 Final Four is scheduled for the Alamodome in San Antonio, and the 2027 Final Four for Nationwide Arena in Columbus. Stanford leads all programs with nine titles, followed by Penn State with eight and Nebraska with five. Big Ten Conference and Southeastern Conference schools are among the sport's top programs, and most of their home matches play in on-campus gyms of a few thousand seats, which is why tickets for a top program can be scarce.

Beach volleyball and the AVP

The Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP), founded in 1983, runs the main US pro beach tour. In 2024 it added the AVP League, a city-based team format with one men's and one women's pair per team, alongside its traditional tournaments. Its marquee event, the Manhattan Beach Open, has been played beside the Manhattan Beach Pier in California since 1960 and is the longest-running beach tournament in the country, drawing an estimated 60,000 or more people over three days.

Beach events often mix free open seating around outer courts with ticketed or reserved seating at the center court, so check what a given ticket covers before you buy.

Where to sit for volleyball

  • Indoors, sideline seats a few rows up are the best view. You see both sides of the net and can follow the ball across, and a little height helps you read blocks and defensive positioning.
  • Courtside rows are close to the players and the noise, but from floor level the net and officials' stands can cut into your view of the far side.
  • Behind the end lines gives a good look at serves and rotations but makes it harder to judge depth and whether a ball is in or out.
  • Big arenas for the Final Four: the court is small inside an NBA-size arena. Lower-level seats along the sideline are worth it; upper corners are far away.
  • At the beach: center-court stands put you close, but you will be in the sun for hours. Seats with the sun behind you are easier to watch from.

How volleyball tickets sell, and first-timer tips

Pro volleyball is new enough that most tickets are sold one match at a time, with season packages for regulars, and demand is still building city by city. Deloitte forecasts that global (not US-only) women's elite sports revenue will reach at least 3 billion US dollars in 2026, with matchday revenue about 30 percent of that, and notes comparatively few repeat ticket holders, according to its 2026 women's sports report. In practice that means many pro volleyball buyers are first-timers buying single matches.

  • College demand is concentrated. Top programs sell out small gyms through season tickets and donor priority, so the resale market is where most outsiders find seats for big matches.
  • Final Four tickets can be sold as all-session packages covering both semifinals and the final, so check whether a listing is for one session or all of them.
  • Arrive for warmups. Volleyball matches are best of five sets and can be over in about an hour or run much longer, so do not count on a set end time.
  • Check the venue's current bag policy before you go, especially at college arenas, where rules differ by school.
