Arizona State football in brief: Kush, two Rose Bowls and a Big 12 title
The Arizona State Sun Devils play home football games at Mountain America Stadium on the ASU campus in Tempe, Arizona, an open-air stadium that opened in 1958 and was called Sun Devil Stadium until a naming-rights deal in 2023. The playing surface is Frank Kush Field, natural grass. Home games run on Saturdays from late August or early September through late November and ASU has played in the Big 12 since 2024 after 46 seasons in the Pac-10 and Pac-12.
ASU has fielded a team since 1897 and claims 18 conference championships across the Border Conference, the Western Athletic Conference, the Pac-12 and the Big 12. Dan Devine's 1957 team went 10–0, and his assistant Frank Kush then coached for 22 seasons (1958–1979), going 176–54–1, winning the first three Fiesta Bowls and finishing 12–0 in 1975 with a 17–14 Fiesta Bowl win over Nebraska. The 1986 team won ASU's first Pac-10 title and beat Michigan in the 1987 Rose Bowl, and the 1996 team shut out top-ranked Nebraska 19–0 on the night the field was named for Kush, went 11–0 in the regular season and came within seconds of beating Ohio State in the 1997 Rose Bowl.
The 2024 team won the Big 12 championship 45–19 over Iowa State in ASU's first season in the league, earned a first-round bye in the College Football Playoff and lost to Texas in double overtime in the Peach Bowl. Notable former Sun Devils include Pat Tillman, Terrell Suggs, Jake Plummer and Mike Haynes.
Where to sit at Mountain America Stadium
The stadium went through a five-year, phased renovation completed in August 2019. Upper-deck seats were removed, the south end zone bleachers were replaced with a permanent structure, both sides of the lower bowl were rebuilt, an athletics facility and a large video board went in at the north end, and new club areas opened. Capacity was listed at 53,599 as of 2018, well below the 1989 peak of 74,865, so older references to a 70,000-seat stadium are out of date.
West side, east side and clubs
The field runs north to south. The west side holds the main premium spaces, including the Coach's Club, Legends' Club and Founders' Club. Additional clubs sit on the east and south sides, and the North Loge Boxes, new in 2025, put premium seating at field level in the north end. Sideline seats between the 30-yard lines in the lower bowl give the best view; the first few rows sit behind the team benches and sideline traffic.
Sun and heat
Heat drives seat choice in Tempe. With a north–south field, the afternoon and early-evening sun sits in the western sky, so the east side faces it and the west side has it at its back. That makes west-side seats the better pick for any game that kicks off in daylight in August, September or early October. By November, evening games are mild and either side works.
Students and end zones
Students enter through the southeast gate. End-zone seats are the least expensive way in and work well if you mainly want the atmosphere. The large video board sits above the north end zone, so south end zone seats face it.
The Territorial Cup and the Sun Devils' biggest home games
Demand at Mountain America Stadium follows a few predictable games.
- Arizona: the in-state rivalry dates to 1899, and the winner takes the Territorial Cup. The series moved with both schools from the WAC to the Pac-10 in 1978 and to the Big 12 in 2024. Arizona leads the all-time series by six or seven games depending on which school's record book you use; ASU holds the lead since becoming a university in 1958.
- Utah: a conference rivalry that has picked up intensity in recent seasons, with a lopsided Utah win in 2023 and an ASU win in Tempe in 2024.
- Big 12 contenders and ranked visitors: especially in prime time, when Tempe night games draw the biggest crowds.
The Territorial Cup game, played in Tempe in alternating years, is the hardest ticket of the season. Early non-conference games are the easiest and least expensive way in.
Devil Walk, Sparky and Tempe gameday
As of the 2024–2025 gameday guide, the Devil Walk takes place on Ellie Zeigler Way about two and a half hours before kickoff, with the team arriving alongside Sparky, the spirit squad and the Sun Devil Marching Band, which closes with a short concert.
- Sparky the Sun Devil: the mascot since 1946, when students voted to replace the Bulldog.
- Stomp the Bus: the entrance video shows a giant Sparky crushing the visiting team's bus.
- Fight songs: the band plays "Maroon and Gold" after touchdowns and "Go Go Devils" after field goals.
- Tailgating: pass-holder lots open seven hours before kickoff and guest lots five and a half hours before. Tailgating is limited to surface lots within your space, with beer and wine only, and no kegs or glass.
The stadium also has a long history beyond college football. It hosted the Fiesta Bowl from 1971 to 2006, was the home of the NFL's Cardinals from 1988 through 2005 and hosted Super Bowl XXX in 1996. Its college-football attendance record, 80,470, was set at the 1999 Fiesta Bowl.
How Arizona State football tickets work
ASU sells season tickets, single-game tickets and group packages through Sun Devil Athletics. Donors to the athletics fund generally receive priority for the best season seats and parking, and students attend through their own allotment.
For the Territorial Cup game, prime-time conference matchups and any game with title implications, the resale market is how most fans get in. Resale prices follow the opponent, the kickoff time, the team's form that season and, for day games, the forecast high. West-side lower-bowl seats and the club areas draw the most demand; end-zone and upper-level corner seats are usually the least expensive.
Every GoodSeats order is backed by a 100% guarantee, so resale seats come with protection if something goes wrong.
Bag policy, water and getting to the stadium
As of the 2024–2025 season, Mountain America Stadium enforces a clear-bag policy: bags must be clear plastic, vinyl or PVC no larger than 12 by 6 by 12 inches, or a small clutch under 4.5 by 6.5 inches. Backpacks, large purses and camera bags are not allowed. Gates open 90 minutes before kickoff, and there is no re-entry except in a weather emergency. Factory-sealed water bottles under 51 ounces are allowed, and drinking fountains are on every concourse; in early-season heat, use them. Beer and wine sales end at the end of the third quarter. Check the current Sun Devil gameday guide before you go.
Valley Metro light rail is the easiest way to reach the stadium. The Veterans Way/College Avenue station sits just west of the stadium, with trains every 15 minutes during the day and about every 20 minutes after 7 p.m. on Saturdays, according to the gameday guide. Driving means paying for a campus lot and waiting out postgame traffic.
