Army football in brief: the program behind the Black Knights
Army Black Knights football is the U.S. Military Academy's team, and its home games are played at Michie Stadium on the West Point campus above the Hudson River, from early September through November. The program dates to 1890, when Navy challenged the cadets to a game of the then-new sport, and that first meeting started what is now one of the oldest rivalries in college football.
Army's peak came under coach Earl Blaik (1941–1958). The Cadets claimed national championships in 1944, 1945 and 1946, adding to earlier claimed titles in 1914 and 1916, and produced back-to-back Heisman Trophy winners in Doc Blanchard (1945) and Glenn Davis (1946). Pete Dawkins added a third Heisman in 1958.
For most of its history Army played as an independent, apart from a stint in Conference USA from 1998 to 2004. In 2024 it joined the American Athletic Conference, now called the American Conference, as a football-only member, and won the league title in its first season after going 8–0 in conference play. The program's bowl record stands at 9–3. The Black Knights name was officially adopted in 1999; the mule has been the mascot since 1936.
Michie Stadium: the layout after the 2026 rebuild
Michie Stadium opened in 1924 with a 17–0 win over Saint Louis University. It is named for Dennis Michie, who organized and coached West Point's first team in 1890, and the field has been called Blaik Field since 1999. The stadium sits just west of Lusk Reservoir, in the shadow of Fort Putnam, and Sports Illustrated once ranked it the third-best sports venue of the 20th century for its setting above the Hudson and the campus's Neo-Gothic buildings.
The East Stands project
The 2026 season is the first full year after the Preservation Project, which rebuilt the East Stands (originally built in 1962) as a 160,000-square-foot structure with premium seating, hospitality areas and better accessibility. Capacity was reduced to about 30,000 during the 2024 and 2025 construction seasons. For 2026, Wikipedia lists it at about 36,000, while the athletics department's stadium page cites 38,000. The stadium now carries the name Michie Stadium Preserved by USAA.
One change matters to every buyer: sections have been renumbered and rows are now numbered rather than lettered. Seat locations from older seasons, older seating charts and older forum posts may no longer match. Check a current chart before you buy.
Where to sit
- The Corps of Cadets: the athletics department describes the cadet seating as stretching from end zone to end zone, so the Corps is the backdrop of the game. The cadets stand for the entire game, which shapes the view of anyone seated directly behind them.
- The west sideline: the press box sits above the west sideline. With a north-south field, west-side seats keep the afternoon sun at your back.
- The new East Stands: the place for premium seating and the newest concourses and restrooms, though east-side fans face the afternoon sun.
- Higher rows: the stadium's setting is part of the appeal, and higher rows give views over Lusk Reservoir toward the Hudson Valley.
Navy, Air Force and the biggest dates
Three games define the Army calendar. The Army-Navy Game is played on the second Saturday of December at a neutral NFL stadium, not at West Point; it has its own guide on GoodSeats, and the 2026 game is set for MetLife Stadium. Michie Stadium hosted the game in 1943 and again in 2020, when pandemic restrictions moved it to campus.
The Army–Air Force game is normally played on the first Saturday in November. Air Force hosts in odd-numbered years, so even-numbered years, including 2026, are Army's turn at home. That is usually the hottest ticket of the regular season at Michie, with the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy often at stake. Army has won the trophy 10 times, most recently in 2023. For the other side of the series, see Air Force Falcons Football.
Notre Dame is Army's other historic rival (see Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football), and their series has a long history of neutral-site games; check the schedule for whether a given meeting is at West Point.
Gameday at West Point
Army home games are as much about the setting as the football. The Corps of Cadets marches in before the game, and the cadets stand for the full 60 minutes.
Getting onto the post takes planning. For major games the Academy has published traffic and parking plans with shuttle routes from remote lots such as Buffalo Soldier Field and H Lot, and it encourages fans to arrive early. In its December 2024 guidance for the conference title game, the Academy required all fans 17 and older to show a valid ID to enter West Point, and it routed accessible parking through Stony Lonesome Gate. Rules can differ by game, so check the Academy's community notices before you go.
Inside the stadium, all six new concession locations opened in 2026 are cashless, so bring a card or phone wallet. The project also added a fan store and moved the Army Athletic Hall of Fame to Victory Plaza.
Bags and entry at Michie Stadium
As of the 2026 season, Michie Stadium enforces a clear-bag policy for ticketed events:
- one clear bag (plastic, vinyl or PVC) no larger than 12 by 6 by 12 inches;
- or one clear plastic freezer bag, gallon size or smaller;
- plus one small clutch or wallet without a handle or strap, no larger than 8 by 5 by 2 inches.
Backpacks, coolers, fanny packs, outside food and drink, water bottles, umbrellas and non-approved seat cushions are prohibited. A walk-through weapons-detection system is in use at each gate, and fans generally do not need to remove phones, keys or watches. For how these rules compare nationally, see Stadium Bag Policies. Check the athletics department's policy announcement for the current rules before you go.
How Army football tickets work
Army sells season tickets, single-game tickets and, since the East Stands opened, premium seating through its athletics department. Cadets attend as a body, so there is no student allotment for the public to compete with, but the Corps does occupy a large share of a stadium that holds well under 40,000.
For a September game against a smaller opponent, buying close to the date is usually fine. The Air Force game in even years, a ranked conference opponent and a Notre Dame visit are different: those can sell out, and resale is where most fans find seats. Prices on the resale market follow the stakes, the opponent's traveling crowd and the weather. The Army-Navy Game is ticketed separately from Army's home schedule. Every order on GoodSeats is backed by a 100% guarantee, and Are Resale Tickets Legit? explains how the resale market works.
