Journey, the band and its catalog
Journey is an American rock band formed in San Francisco in 1973 by guitarist Neal Schon, keyboardist Gregg Rolie, bassist Ross Valory and others. It is a hits band in the fullest sense: a Journey concert is built around songs that most of the audience can sing from memory, led by "Don't Stop Believin'," which by 2024 was certified 18 times platinum and is the best-selling digital track in US history. If you are buying tickets, expect a broad, multigenerational crowd and a setlist anchored in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
The band's commercial peak came after singer Steve Perry joined in October 1977 and keyboardist Jonathan Cain replaced Rolie in 1980. Escape (1981) reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and Frontiers (1983) peaked at No. 2. Perry left after the Raised on Radio tour in 1987, returned for the 1996 album Trial by Fire, and later left again. The 1988 Greatest Hits compilation spent 750 weeks on the Billboard album charts through 2008. Journey was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 7, 2017, at a ceremony held at Barclays Center.
Who is on stage today
Since December 5, 2007, the lead singer has been Arnel Pineda, whom Schon found performing Journey covers in videos on YouTube. As of 2026, the lineup was Neal Schon (guitar), Jonathan Cain (keyboards and guitar), Arnel Pineda (vocals), Deen Castronovo (drums), Jason Derlatka (keyboards) and Todd Jensen (bass). Lineups change, so check the band's announcements for the current roster.
The show leans on what the band does best: guitar solos from Schon, Cain's keyboard and piano parts, and big sing-along choruses. Fans who come for the hits will hear them; the band released its 15th studio album, Freedom, on July 8, 2022, and newer material usually takes a smaller share of the night.
Recent tours, with dates
- 2023 to early 2024: toured North America and abroad with Toto.
- July to September 2024: toured North America with Def Leppard.
- Final Frontier Tour (2026): on October 10, 2025, the band announced that Jonathan Cain would leave after a final tour, and on November 6, 2025, it announced the North American leg of that farewell run, named the Final Frontier Tour, which began in February 2026.
The band has a long history in large rooms, going back to the 1978 Infinity Tour, when Journey topped a bill that included Van Halen. Current and future dates appear in the live event list on this page.
Picking seats for a Journey concert
Journey's recent tours have played large venues, often on double bills, so first check the venue type and which act headlines your date. Then use these principles:
- Arenas, lower bowl facing the stage: the best overall seat for a band show. Sound is most balanced from the center, and you can follow Schon's solos and Cain at the keyboards.
- Arenas, floor: close and loud. Many rock tours sell the floor as reserved chairs rather than standing room, so check the listing.
- Amphitheaters, reserved pavilion seats: covered and close; the center sections have the best sound.
- Amphitheaters, lawn: the general admission grass area behind the pavilion. It is the most relaxed and least expensive option, but distant, and exposed to weather.
- Stadiums: lower-level sideline seats near the stage end beat distant field seats for most people.
On a co-headline bill, check the listing for set order, which can vary by date.
How Journey ticket demand behaves
Journey's audience is large and spans several generations, and the hits, more than any new album, are what sell the show.
- Farewell framing raises interest. Because the Final Frontier Tour is billed as Cain's last, demand for these dates may run higher than on a routine tour.
- Lower-bowl center seats sell first. Lawn and upper-level tickets often remain available closer to the date.
- Weekends and major markets draw the most. Friday and Saturday dates in big cities usually command the strongest resale interest.
