What MJ the Musical is
MJ the Musical (styled MJ: The Musical) is a Broadway show about Michael Jackson, playing at the Neil Simon Theatre on West 52nd Street in Manhattan. As of October 2026 it is still running there, with no closing date announced. It is not a straight biography. The story is set in 1992, in the rehearsal room for Jackson's Dangerous World Tour, days before the tour's opening night in Munich, and it flashes back to earlier chapters of his life as the songs call them up.
The book (the spoken script) is by Lynn Nottage, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner. Christopher Wheeldon, a choreographer best known for ballet, directed and choreographed it. The score is drawn from Jackson's own catalog rather than written new, which makes MJ a jukebox musical (a show built from existing hit songs).
Broadway opening, awards and box office
Previews began at the Neil Simon Theatre on December 6, 2021, and the show opened officially on February 1, 2022, with Myles Frost in the title role. At the 2022 Tony Awards it won 4 of its 10 nominations:
- Best Actor in a Musical for Myles Frost
- Best Choreography for Christopher Wheeldon
- Best Lighting Design for Natasha Katz
- Best Sound Design for Gareth Owen
Three of those four awards went to the dancing, the lighting and the sound. That tells you what the show does best, and it should shape where you sit. Reviews were mixed: critics praised the spectacle and the lead performance and were cooler on the dialogue and on how little the script probes Jackson's personal controversies.
Commercially it has been a hit. As of March 2026 the Broadway production had grossed around 319 million dollars across 1,701 performances, with attendance above 2.2 million, and it has broken the Neil Simon Theatre's house box office record 11 times.
Where MJ plays: Broadway, touring and abroad
The home production is at the Neil Simon Theatre, 250 West 52nd Street, a 1,467-seat house that opened in 1927 as the Alvin Theatre and was renamed for the playwright Neil Simon in 1983. It has an orchestra level and one balcony (the mezzanine), with boxes along the sides.
Touring status changes often, so check before you plan around it:
- North American tour: launched August 1, 2023 at the Nederlander Theatre in Chicago, scheduled to run through August 2025. As of October 2026, the Broadway League's list of current tours does not include MJ the Musical.
- London: the West End production at the Prince Edward Theatre opened in March 2024 and closed on February 28, 2026.
- Elsewhere: productions opened in Hamburg (December 2024, German dialogue with English songs) and Australia (Sydney in February 2025, then Melbourne). An Asia tour is scheduled from October 2026 and a UK tour in 2027.
For a US buyer in late 2026, that makes Broadway the only domestic place to see the show.
Best seats at the Neil Simon Theatre for MJ
MJ the Musical is a dance show above all. The big ensemble numbers, the lighting grid and the projected scenery read best from a little height and a little distance. Use that as your rule of thumb.
Front mezzanine: the best overall view
The first several rows of the mezzanine put the whole stage picture in front of you: the formations, the floor patterns and the lighting design that won a Tony. You lose some facial detail in the book scenes, but you see the choreography as it was designed to be seen. For a first visit this is the seat to aim for.
Center orchestra, mid-house: close and still complete
Center orchestra, roughly the middle third of the rows, is the best choice if you want to watch the lead's footwork and expressions up close and still take in the full width of the stage. This area usually draws the strongest demand, so it tends to price highest.
Seats to think twice about
- The first few orchestra rows: very close, but you look up at the stage and can miss the feet and the floor patterns that make the dancing work.
- Extreme side seats: high-side orchestra and far-side mezzanine seats cut off part of the stage picture. That matters more in a show built on full-stage formations.
- Box seats: they feel exclusive, but the angle to the stage is steep.
- Rear orchestra under the overhang: the mezzanine's lip can clip the top of the set and lighting rig. Rear mezzanine center is often the better buy.
What to know before you go
The show draws its score from Jackson's catalog of hits, staged as full production numbers, and moves between the 1992 rehearsal room and earlier chapters of his life. The script deals with the pressures of fame and the business of mounting a stadium tour. Critics noted that it stays close to that rehearsal-room frame and spends little time on the more difficult parts of Jackson's life story, so go in expecting a celebration of the music rather than an investigation.
The official site was being updated when this page was checked in October 2026, so confirm the current running time and age guidance before you buy for children. Two practical notes about the Neil Simon:
- Location: 250 West 52nd Street, at the northern end of the Theater District, a short walk from Times Square.
- Arrival: plan to be at the door well before curtain. Security screening and a single-file line on a narrow Midtown sidewalk take longer than most visitors expect, especially on Saturday nights.
When demand peaks for MJ
MJ has been one of the steadier sellers on Broadway since it opened, so demand moves with the calendar more than with buzz. Prices on the resale market (tickets resold by other fans) tend to follow a few patterns:
- Holiday weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year's, plus spring break and summer, draw the most tourist traffic and the firmest prices.
- Friday and Saturday evenings sell first. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings usually offer more choice in the front mezzanine and center orchestra.
- Weekday matinees outside holiday periods are often the easiest way into good seats.
- Cast changes in the title role can briefly lift interest when a new lead starts.
If you have a fixed date, buy early for the holiday weeks. If you have flexibility, a midweek performance in January or early February is usually the easiest time to find center seats. Every order on GoodSeats is backed by a 100% guarantee.
