Dates and live ticket listings appear here as soon as they are on sale. The guide below covers what to know before you buy.
The musical, not the band
Buena Vista Social Club is a Broadway musical, playing at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on West 45th Street, that tells the story behind the celebrated album of the same name. It is not a concert by the touring band of veteran Cuban musicians. Set in Havana and moving between the 1950s and the 1990s, it follows a group of musicians, centered on the singer Omara Portuondo, whose lives were shaped by revolution and decades of change before the recording sessions that made them famous worldwide.
The songs are performed in Spanish, in Cuban styles such as son (the guitar-and-percussion root of salsa), danzón and bolero, with a band of musicians playing on stage. Marco Ramirez wrote the book, Saheem Ali directed, and Patricia Delgado and Justin Peck choreographed. The show opened on Broadway on March 19, 2025, after previews from February 21.
From Atlantic Theater Company to the Tony Awards
The musical premiered Off-Broadway at Atlantic Theater Company on November 17, 2023. Strong sales and reviews earned it two extensions before it closed on January 28, 2024, and it moved to Broadway the following year.
At the 2025 Tony Awards it received 10 nominations, including Best Musical. It won four competitive awards, for Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Natalie Venetia Belcon, who played Omara), Best Choreography, Best Orchestrations and Best Sound Design, and its on-stage musicians received a Special Tony Award. The cast album won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. Other members of the original Broadway company included Julio Monge as Compay, Mel Semé as Ibrahim, Jainardo Batista Sterling as Rubén and Justin Cunningham as Juan de Marcos; cast members change over a run, so check current casting before you go.
Broadway run, national tour and London
- Broadway: Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, 236 West 45th Street. As of October 2026, tickets are on sale through January 17, 2027, following a booking extension released in May 2026. Some listings show that date as a closing date; treat it as the current booking period and watch for further extensions.
- North American tour: the first national tour opened in September 2026 at Shea's Performing Arts Center in Buffalo, New York. Announced stops include Washington, D.C., Chicago and Los Angeles, among others.
- London: a West End production was announced in June 2026 for 2027.
Touring cities and dates change, so confirm the route with the local presenting theater before planning travel.
Runtime, age guidance and what to expect
The show runs 2 hours and 10 minutes, including one intermission. The production recommends it for ages 8 and up, and children under 4 are not admitted.
The lyrics are in Spanish, but the dialogue carries the story, and you do not need to speak Spanish to follow it. The story touches on the Cuban Revolution, poverty and the cost of political upheaval on artists' careers, handled seriously but without graphic content. Audiences who know the album hear many of its songs; those who don't come away wanting to hear it.
Best seats at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre
The Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre opened in 1917 as the Plymouth and took its current name in 2005. It is a mid-size house with two seating levels. The Shubert Organization lists 1,079 seats: 653 in the orchestra, 392 in the mezzanine and 24 in boxes.
Center orchestra
Middle rows of the center orchestra are the best match for this production. The musicians are part of the stage picture, and the partner dancing, which won the Tony for choreography, reads best from close range and at stage height.
Front mezzanine
The first several rows of the mezzanine, center, show the full band and the ensemble's floor patterns at once, and many regular theatergoers prefer them to the rear orchestra in a house this size.
Where to be careful
- Rear mezzanine: the stage reads small, and the faces and footwork that make this show work are hard to see from the last rows.
- Box seats and extreme side orchestra: sharp angles can hide musicians on the near side of the stage.
- Accessibility: as of 2026, all seven wheelchair locations are in the orchestra, and the mezzanine is up 31 steps with no elevator, according to the Shubert Organization's Schoenfeld page.
Demand patterns and buying tips
A Best Musical nominee with a Grammy-winning cast album draws steady demand, and Saturday evenings and holiday weeks (Thanksgiving through New Year's, spring break and summer) sell first. The approach of an end to the current booking period can also concentrate demand on the final weeks, as fans who have put off going try to get in.
- Best selection: Tuesday through Thursday evenings outside holiday periods.
- First choice to go: center orchestra and the front of the mezzanine.
- On tour: tour stops are short (the Buffalo opening ran about a week), so weekend performances in each city can sell out faster than on Broadway.
