What The Book of Mormon is

The Book of Mormon is a satirical Broadway musical playing at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre on West 49th Street in Manhattan. As of October 2026 it is still running there, with no closing date announced, 15 years after it opened. It follows two young missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the confident Elder Price and the insecure, fabulist Elder Cunningham, who are sent to a remote village in Uganda. The village is dealing with famine, disease and a violent warlord, and nobody there is interested in their pamphlets.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of South Park, wrote the music, lyrics and book with the composer and lyricist Robert Lopez. Casey Nicholaw and Trey Parker co-directed it, and Nicholaw choreographed. The humor is crude and profane, but the show is structured as a classic Broadway musical with big ensemble numbers, and much of its comedy comes from that contrast.

Broadway history and awards

Previews began on February 24, 2011, and the show opened on March 24, 2011, with Andrew Rannells as Elder Price and Josh Gad as Elder Cunningham. Its awards include:

  • 9 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book and Best Original Score
  • A Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album
  • Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Musical, Music and Lyrics
  • The Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical, for the London production

It recouped its 11.4 million dollar investment in nine months. By December 2025 it had passed 5,000 performances and ranked as the 10th longest-running show in Broadway history, with worldwide grosses above 900 million dollars. The church it satirizes answered with a light touch, buying ads in the Playbill with lines such as "You've seen the play, now read the book."

In March 2026 the production marked 15 years on Broadway. In May 2026 a fire in backstage areas on the theater's upper floors, including its electrical room, forced performances to stop for about three weeks. The show reopened on May 27, 2026.

The Eugene O'Neill Theatre and the touring picture

The Eugene O'Neill Theatre, at 230 West 49th Street, is one of Broadway's smaller musical houses, with 1,108 seats on an orchestra level and one balcony (the mezzanine), plus boxes. It opened in 1925 as the Forrest Theatre, was renamed the Coronet in 1945 and became the Eugene O'Neill in 1959. Herbert J. Krapp designed it, and its interior is a designated New York City landmark.

Outside New York, the show has toured North America several times. Two Equity tours ran between 2012 and 2020, and a non-Equity tour (one using performers outside the Actors' Equity union contract) launched in September 2022. As of October 2026, the Broadway League's list of current tours does not include The Book of Mormon, so check the official site before you assume it is coming to your city. The London production has run in the West End since March 2013.

Running time, age limit and content

As of October 2026, the official site lists a running time of about 2 hours and 30 minutes with one 15-minute intermission. Children under 4 are not admitted, and the production states that it contains explicit language.

That warning understates it for some audiences. Expect:

  • Constant profanity, including in song lyrics
  • Blunt jokes about religion, AIDS, war and sexual violence
  • Mockery of religious belief, though the show ends on a sympathetic note about what faith does for people

The age 4 cutoff is a minimum, not a recommendation. For most families it makes more sense as a show for older teenagers and adults. If you are buying for a group, make sure everyone knows the tone going in.

Best seats for The Book of Mormon

The O'Neill is small enough that there are few truly bad seats, and that changes the usual Broadway calculation. The show is driven by lyrics, timing and faces rather than scenery, so hearing every word and seeing the actors' expressions matters more than taking in a big stage picture.

Center orchestra: the ideal seat

Center orchestra from roughly the fifth row back to the middle of the house is the best place to catch the facial comedy and the quick lyrics. This section usually draws the strongest demand.

Front mezzanine: the best value

Because the house is compact, the front rows of the mezzanine feel close to the stage. They also show Casey Nicholaw's ensemble choreography clearly. Many regular theatergoers prefer the front mezzanine center here to the rear orchestra.

Seats to weigh carefully

  • Rear orchestra: the mezzanine overhang can cut off the top of the set. The front mezzanine is often the better buy.
  • Far side seats on either level angle you away from the center-stage action.
  • Back rows of the mezzanine: still close by Broadway standards, but the faces that sell the jokes get small.

When demand peaks, and how to time it

The show has been running long enough that demand is steady and predictable rather than frantic. On the resale market (tickets resold by other buyers), prices follow the familiar Broadway rhythm:

  • Holiday weeks, especially between Christmas and New Year's, plus spring break and summer, are the busiest.
  • Friday and Saturday nights go first. A small house fills fast, so prime center seats can thin out weeks ahead.
  • Tuesday through Thursday evenings and non-holiday matinees usually offer the widest choice.
  • Stunt casting lifts demand for limited runs. Original cast members have returned for special engagements before, and those dates sell out quickly.

The production also runs a digital lottery for a limited number of reduced-price seats, so it is worth entering if you are flexible. If you need a specific date in a holiday week, buy well ahead. Details are on the official Book of Mormon site.
