Oregon football in brief: from the Webfoots to the Big Ten

The Oregon Ducks play home football games at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, an open-air stadium just across the Willamette River from the University of Oregon campus. Its official capacity is 54,000, standing room pushes crowds toward 60,000, and home games fall on fall Saturdays (with occasional weeknight games) from late August or early September through November. Oregon joined the Big Ten for the 2024 season after six decades in the Pac-8, Pac-10 and Pac-12.

The program first played in 1894 and was commonly called the Webfoots until the mid-1960s. For most of the 20th century it was a regional program; Rich Brooks revived it, and his 1994 team won the conference outright and reached the Rose Bowl. Since then Oregon has become one of the most successful programs in the country. It played for the national title after the 2010 season, and Marcus Mariota won the school's first Heisman Trophy in 2014 before Oregon reached the first College Football Playoff final. Oregon finished the 2024 regular season undefeated and won the Big Ten title in its first season in the conference.

Oregon's identity is speed, an aggressive offense and uniforms designed with Nike, which was founded in Eugene by Phil Knight and his Oregon track coach, Bill Bowerman. The Ducks have outfitted with Nike since 1995 and often wear a different combination every week.

Where to sit at Autzen Stadium

Autzen is a compact bowl with a sunken field, which puts fans unusually close to the action and helps explain the noise. The field runs east to west, slightly skewed so players avoid the low late-fall sun, so the two sidelines are the north and south sides. A 2002 expansion added seating and luxury boxes on the south sideline, and the east end zone holds one of the largest video boards in college football, installed in 2020.

Sideline vs. end zone

Sideline seats between the 30-yard lines are the best views, and because the bowl is small, even the upper rows on the sidelines feel close. Low rows near the benches lose the near side of the field behind players and staff; rows in the teens and higher see over them. End-zone seats cost less, and the west end zone looks straight at the big video board.

Sun, rain and shade

On an afternoon kickoff the sun sits to the south and west, so north-side seats face it and south-side seats have it behind them. Rain is the bigger factor in Eugene in October and November. Most of Autzen's seats are open to the sky, and open umbrellas are not permitted in the seating areas, so pack a rain shell.

Students and standing room

Students enter through the South Gate and fill their own section, where alcohol is not allowed. Standing-room tickets around the rim are how Autzen holds about 6,000 more fans than its seat count, and the record crowd of 60,129 came for the 32–31 win over Ohio State on October 12, 2024.

Washington, Oregon State and the biggest Autzen dates

  • Washington: played regularly since 1900 and now Oregon's protected annual Big Ten game. It is the rivalry Duck fans circle first, and Kenny Wheaton's 97-yard interception return against the Huskies in 1994, known as "The Pick," is replayed before every home game.
  • Oregon State: the Civil War, first played in 1894 and continuous from 1945 through the Pac-12 era. The two schools no longer share a conference, so check the schedule; the game is not guaranteed every year.
  • Big Ten heavyweights: visits from Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State and USC are now the hottest tickets. The Ohio State game in 2024 set the stadium attendance record, and Oregon beat USC 42–27 in 2025 when the series resumed in the Big Ten.
  • Playoff games: under the 12-team format, a highly seeded Oregon can host a first-round playoff game at Autzen, as it did against James Madison after the 2025 season.

Early non-conference games against smaller programs are the easiest and least expensive way into Autzen. ESPN's College GameDay visits, night kickoffs and ranked opponents push demand sharply higher.

It never rains in Autzen: traditions and gameday

  • "It never rains in Autzen Stadium": since 1990, the public address announcer has led the crowd in this line before every home game, whatever the forecast says.
  • The Duck on a motorcycle: the team takes the field behind the Oregon Duck riding on the back of a motorcycle while the band plays "Mighty Oregon." The north side then chants "Go" and the south side answers "Ducks."
  • Shout: Autzen stood in for Faber College's stadium in the 1978 film Animal House, and the toga-party song "Shout" plays at the end of the third quarter while the crowd dances.
  • Push-ups and the train horn: a train horn blares after every Oregon score, and the Duck mascot does as many push-ups as Oregon has points.
  • The noise: a crowd of 59,277 was measured at 127.2 decibels against USC in 2007, and visiting coaches and broadcasters have long called Autzen one of the loudest stadiums in the sport.

Getting there

Many fans walk from campus across the Autzen Footbridge and through Alton Baker Park, about a quarter mile from the main campus. Oregon Athletics runs the Autzen Express shuttle from park-and-ride lots in Eugene and Springfield, starting three hours before kickoff, with return trips only at halftime and for an hour after the game. As of the 2026 season, shuttle passes are sold online only and cash is not accepted; Lane Transit District does not run its own Autzen shuttle, though you can ride LTD to campus and walk. Reserved parking lots open six hours before kickoff, but never before 7 a.m., and are allocated by donor priority. Check Oregon's gameday parking page for current lots and shuttle stops.

How Oregon football tickets work

Oregon sells season tickets first, and the best seats and parking are allocated through the Duck Athletic Fund, the athletics donor program, using a priority points system. Reserved parking at Autzen also requires a season pass assigned by priority. Students get tickets through a separate student ticket program, and single-game home and away tickets go on sale through the athletics ticket office. Tickets are mobile.

Autzen is one of the smaller stadiums in the Big Ten, so the arrival of Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State and USC on the home schedule has made Oregon's biggest games some of the scarcest tickets in the conference. For those games, and for Washington, single-game inventory often disappears, and the resale market is the main way in. Demand peaks when Oregon is ranked, when GameDay is in town, and for night games; it is softest for early-season non-conference games. Every GoodSeats order is backed by a 100% guarantee.

Autzen Stadium bag policy and entry

As of the 2026 season, Oregon's Autzen fan guide allows one clear bag no larger than 12 by 6 by 12 inches, or a one-gallon clear plastic storage bag, plus a small clutch or purse. Seat cushions may be up to 17.5 inches wide by 13.5 inches deep with a back no taller than 19 inches. Check the Autzen Stadium page for current rules before you go.

  • Gates: most gates open three hours before kickoff; the East Gate opens 90 minutes before.
  • Re-entry: not allowed once you leave the stadium.
  • Alcohol: beer and wine are sold at concession stands, but not in student seating areas, and no outside alcohol is allowed.
  • Umbrellas: open umbrellas are not permitted in the seats or aisles.
