SMU football in brief: from the Aerial Circus to the ACC
The SMU Mustangs play home football games at Gerald J. Ford Stadium, an open-ended horseshoe on the Southern Methodist University campus in University Park, a separate town surrounded by Dallas in Dallas County. Home games fall on Saturdays from late August or early September into late November, and since July 2024 SMU has played in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) after eleven seasons in the American Athletic Conference.
Few programs have a history this dramatic. SMU first played in 1915, and in the 1920s sportswriters called Ray Morrison's pass-first teams the "Aerial Circus" because they threw 30 to 40 times a game when most teams threw five or six. SMU claims three national championships (1935, 1981 and 1982). Doak Walker won the 1948 Heisman Trophy, still the only Mustang to do so, and his popularity filled the Cotton Bowl so reliably that it was nicknamed "The House that Doak Built." Hayden Fry later made SMU the first Southwest Conference school to sign a Black scholarship player, Jerry LeVias, who debuted in 1966.
The early 1980s brought the "Pony Express" backfield of Eric Dickerson and Craig James and a 49–9–1 record from 1980 to 1984, the best winning percentage in Division I-A over that span. In 1987 the NCAA imposed the "death penalty" (the cancellation of an entire season) over payments to players, the only time a football program has received it, and SMU did not play again until 1989. The rebuild took decades. The 2024 team reached the ACC Championship Game and the first 12-team College Football Playoff, a milestone the program had waited a generation for.
Where to sit at Gerald J. Ford Stadium
Ford Stadium opened on September 2, 2000, on the site of the old Ownby Stadium. The field runs north to south, and the bowl wraps the west sideline, the east sideline and the north end zone. The south end is open, which is why the stadium is described as expandable toward 45,000 by enclosing the horseshoe. Doak Walker Plaza, with a life-size replica of the Doak Walker Award trophy, sits outside the northeast corner, and the Loyd All-Sports Center connects at the northwest corner.
Capacity is listed at 33,200. The regular-season attendance record, set against TCU in September 2022, is cited as 35,481 in one place and 35,569 in another, and the overall record of 36,742 came at the 2010 Armed Forces Bowl. A full house in a stadium this size feels packed.
Sideline vs. end zone
Sideline seats between the 30-yard lines are the best views and the first to go for marquee games. Because the bowl is compact, even the upper rows of the sideline sections sit closer to the field than the upper deck of a 90,000-seat stadium; a high row on the 40 is often a better seat than a low row in the corner. Seats in the north end zone are the value pick for families. The open south end changes the feel of that end of the field: the crowd noise drains out of it, and plays at that end are viewed from the sidelines at a shallow angle.
Sun and shade
Early-season games in Dallas can be hot, and the orientation matters. With the field running north to south, the west-side stands have the afternoon sun at their backs, while the east-side stands face west into it during day games. For a September afternoon kickoff, the west side is the more comfortable choice; night games even this out.
The student section
SMU's student section, known as The Stampede, is in Sections 123 to 127, and students enter through Gate 5 on a first-come, first-served basis, according to SMU Athletics. Expect the standing, noise and energy that come with sitting next to it, and pick a section a few over if you want to sit down for four quarters.
Rivalries and the SMU games that draw the biggest crowds
For a century, SMU's defining rivalry was TCU and the Battle for the Iron Skillet, played between campuses about 40 miles apart in the Dallas-Fort Worth area since 1915. The regular-season attendance record at Ford Stadium came from a TCU game in September 2022. TCU chose not to renew the series after the 2025 meeting, so no future Iron Skillet games are scheduled.
The biggest home dates now come from the ACC. When SMU joined, the league gave the Mustangs two protected annual opponents, Stanford and California, with the rest of the conference rotating through. The ACC moved to a nine-game conference schedule beginning in 2026, which means more league home games each fall. Visits from the conference's traditional powers usually generate the most resale demand, along with Homecoming, which SMU has celebrated since 1926.
Older regional series with Rice (the Mayor's Cup), North Texas and Navy (the Gansz Trophy) went dormant when SMU left the American, though they could return as non-conference games.
- Highest demand: top ACC opponents, Homecoming and any late-season game with a conference title race at stake.
- Moderate demand: protected games against Stanford and Cal, plus rotating ACC visitors.
- Easiest tickets: early-season non-conference games, which are also the hottest afternoons of the year.
Boulevarding, Peruna and the Dallas gameday
SMU's version of tailgating is called Boulevarding. It takes place on Bishop Boulevard, the tree-lined loop road at the center of campus, under the trees near Dallas Hall, the campus centerpiece that gave SMU its "Hilltop" nickname. Because it happens on a campus lawn rather than in a parking lot, it is one of the more distinctive pregame scenes in the conference.
The mascot is Peruna, and the Mustang Band, about 80 members strong, calls itself "The Best Dressed Band in the Land" and plays big band and jazz music at games.
Logistics matter in a dense neighborhood. SMU urges fans to use official gameday parking, because the surrounding streets of University Park and Highland Park restrict parking and ticket violators. Fans parking on East Campus can ride a gameday shuttle with stops at the Energy Square Garage, SMU Boulevard at the North Central Expressway frontage road, and Binkley Avenue at Airline Drive. DART's Mockingbird Station is the closest rail stop to campus, and rideshare is a practical choice. Check the current SMU parking page and map before you go.
How SMU football tickets work
SMU sells season tickets, single-game tickets and parking through its athletics ticket office. As at most college programs, the best season seats on the sideline go to donors, and priority generally follows giving and years of membership. Students claim free tickets online before each game, with claims opening on the Sunday of game week, which leaves little student inventory on the open market.
Because Ford Stadium is small, the general-public supply for a big ACC game or Homecoming is limited, and resale is how most fans get into those games. Prices for marquee matchups tend to rise during the week as the matchup takes shape, especially when both teams are ranked. Early-season games often have plenty of supply. Every GoodSeats order is backed by a 100% guarantee.
Ford Stadium bag policy and entry
As of the 2024–25 athletics year, SMU allows clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bags up to 12 by 6 by 12 inches, one-gallon clear freezer bags, and small clutches about the size of a hand. Backpacks, outside food and drink, noisemakers and strollers are not allowed (strollers can be checked at Gate 5), though one sealed water bottle per person is permitted. Separate screening is available for medically necessary items. Policies change from season to season, so check the SMU Athletics bag policy before you go.
