Louisville football in brief: from Unitas to the ACC
Louisville Cardinals football tickets get you into L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium (often shortened to L&N Stadium), the University of Louisville's stadium on the south end of its campus. The home schedule usually runs from early September through late November, and the stadium has been fully enclosed since a north end zone expansion finished in 2019.
Louisville first played football in 1912. Frank Camp, who coached from 1946 through 1968 and remains the program's winningest coach, recruited Johnny Unitas and was an early leader in integrating Southern college football, bringing in the program's first Black scholarship players in 1954. His 1957 team won the program's first bowl game, the Sun Bowl. Howard Schnellenberger, a Louisville native who had won a national title at Miami, rebuilt the program from 1985 to 1994, beat Alabama in the 1991 Fiesta Bowl and pushed for the on-campus stadium the team plays in today.
The modern peak came in the 2000s and 2010s. Bobby Petrino's 2006 team won the Big East and the Orange Bowl, and Charlie Strong's 2012 team beat Florida in the Sugar Bowl. Louisville joined the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in 2014, and quarterback Lamar Jackson won the 2016 Heisman Trophy, the first for the school. The 2023 team reached its first ACC Championship Game.
Where to sit at L&N Federal Credit Union Stadium
The stadium opened on September 5, 1998, with 42,000 seats on a reclaimed rail-yard site. It was known as Papa John's Cardinal Stadium, became Cardinal Stadium in 2018 and took the L&N Federal Credit Union name in 2023 under a 20-year naming deal. A 2010 expansion added an upper deck on the east side and brought capacity to 55,000, and the north end zone project completed in 2019 added roughly 6,000 more. Accounts of that project put the addition at 5,800 to 6,000 seats, and the current total is usually listed as about 60,800. The record crowd is 59,225, set against Kentucky on November 25, 2023.
- West sideline: The press box side, with the Brown & Williamson Club behind it. Midfield seats here are among the best in the stadium.
- East sideline: The 2010 expansion side, with 33 suites, about 1,725 club seats and the PNC Club, a 100-yard-long lounge with a glassed-in view of the field. Upper-deck seats on this side are high but central.
- North end zone: Enclosed in 2019 with field-level suites, club-level box seats and about 1,000 club seats. The main video board is at this end.
- South end zone: Home to the Norton Healthcare Terrace, a standing area for about 2,500 people that connects the two sidelines, and the bronze Johnny Unitas statue above the seats. A matching video board faces the field from this end.
Students and visiting fans receive allotments placed by the athletics department, so check the seating map on the listing before you buy. Louisville does not publish a sun and shade guide, so plan for sun at an early-season afternoon game whichever side you choose.
Kentucky, Miami and the biggest home dates
A few opponents set the demand curve for Louisville home games:
- Kentucky: The in-state rival and the biggest game on the schedule. The teams play for the Governor's Cup, now in the last game of the regular season, and the site alternates between Louisville and Lexington. The series resumed in 1994 after a 70-year break, and the stadium's record crowd came for a Kentucky game. In a home year, this is the hardest Louisville ticket.
- Miami: Linked by Howard Schnellenberger, who rebuilt both programs. Since 2023 the winner has received a trophy made from a bronzed pair of his boots, and the teams are slated to meet every year.
- Cincinnati: The oldest and most-played rival, contested for the Keg of Nails. The annual series went dormant after 2013, but the teams met in the 2022 Fenway Bowl.
- Clemson and Florida State: ACC visits that draw well, especially in seasons with conference title stakes. Louisville's 63–20 home win over second-ranked Florida State in 2016 is one of the program's signature results.
Early nonconference games against regional opponents are usually the easiest tickets on the schedule.
Gameday on Louisville's Sports Corridor
The stadium sits on Central Avenue, a stretch the city calls Louisville's Sports Corridor because it also links Churchill Downs, the Kentucky Exposition Center and the university's baseball stadium, all within about a mile. Interstate 65 runs close by, and a lighted University of Louisville sign on the east stands makes the stadium visible from the highway. The large surface lots built with the stadium are the center of tailgating; lot assignments, parking passes and tailgating hours are set by the athletics department each season, so check the current gameday guide before you go.
- The Card March: About two hours and 15 minutes before kickoff, the team gets off its buses at Floyd Street at the south end and walks into the stadium through Gate 4, with the band, cheerleaders and Ladybirds dance team lining the route. In bad weather, the march is moved behind the football complex.
- The rail-yard horn: The shift horn from the South Louisville Rail Yard, the site the stadium was built on, is mounted in the north scoreboard and sounds whenever the Cardinals score.
- The Unitas statue: Players have long touched the statue of Johnny Unitas for luck; it now stands at the south end above the seats.
- The Marching Cards: The band plays at home games and has performed "My Old Kentucky Home" at the Kentucky Derby every year since 1938.

How Louisville football tickets work
Louisville Athletics sells season tickets, single-game tickets and premium seating, including the club seats and suites on the east side and north end. Priority for the best seats generally follows donor giving to the athletics program, and students receive a separate allotment. For most of the season, seats are available through the athletics department, but the Kentucky game and the biggest ACC visits can sell through.
For those games, most fans buy on the resale market from season-ticket holders. Prices climb for rivalry games and for late-season games with ACC title stakes, and they rise across the schedule when the team starts well. Early-season games against smaller opponents usually offer the widest choice of seats. Every GoodSeats order is backed by a 100% guarantee.
Schedules, kickoff times and gameday policies are posted on the official Louisville Athletics site. Many college kickoff times are announced only days or a couple of weeks ahead, so leave flexibility in your travel plans.
