The Steelers Franchise
The Pittsburgh Steelers play home games at Acrisure Stadium, an open-air, natural-grass stadium on the North Shore of the Ohio River, across from downtown Pittsburgh. The regular season runs from September into early January, with preseason games in August and playoffs in January for qualifying teams.
Art Rooney founded the team on July 8, 1933, as the Pittsburgh Pirates; it became the Steelers in 1940, and the Rooney family has owned it ever since. That continuity is part of the franchise's identity, along with a record of success few teams match:
- Six Super Bowl titles in eight appearances, tied with New England for the most.
- Four titles in six seasons in the 1970s (Super Bowls IX, X, XIII and XIV), built on the Steel Curtain defense.
- Two more in the 2005 and 2008 seasons (Super Bowls XL and XLIII).
The Steelers play in the AFC North with the Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals. The Ravens rivalry is the most heated of the modern era; the Browns series is known as the Turnpike Rivalry.
Acrisure Stadium Layout and the Best Seats
The stadium opened in 2001 as Heinz Field and took the Acrisure name in 2022. It seats 68,400 as of 2015. The shape is a horseshoe: two three-tier grandstands run along the sidelines, a lower deck wraps the field, upper bleachers close the north end, and the south end stays open, framing the downtown skyline across the river.
- Lower level (100s): sections 101 through 152 around the field.
- Club level (200s): sideline club seats with indoor lounge access.
- Upper level (500s): the top deck on both sidelines and the north end.
Sun, shade and wind
Because the open end faces south, the field runs north to south. In the afternoon the sun sits to the southwest, so seats on the east sideline look toward it, while the west sideline stands keep it behind them. Club seats under the upper-deck overhang stay shaded; one fan review of section 224 notes shade for the whole game. The open south end also lets wind in off the rivers, which makes the lower south end zone one of the colder spots in December.
Where to sit
- Best overall: lower-level sideline seats between the 20-yard lines, about row 15 and up, high enough to see over the sideline.
- Best for comfort: the 200-level club, especially for late-season night games.
- Best view of the city: north end-zone and upper north seats, which look toward the open end and the skyline. You trade some depth on plays at the far end for the backdrop.
- Best value: low rows of the 500-level sideline sections.
The natural-grass field has drawn criticism in wet weather, a point for players more than fans, but rain at an open-air stadium is worth planning for. Umbrellas are allowed but cannot be opened.
When Steelers Tickets Are Hardest to Find
The Steelers play eight or nine regular-season home games a year. Demand is consistently strong, and some games stand apart.
- Baltimore Ravens: the rivalry game of the modern era and usually the top home ticket.
- Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals: both fan bases can drive to Pittsburgh, which adds buyers to an already tight market.
- Prime-time games: night kickoffs draw a national audience and push resale prices upward.
- Playoff home games: sold on short notice once seeding is set, with demand that moves fast.
Preseason games and early-season non-conference games are the most accessible. Because Steelers home games draw well regardless of the standings, prices on the resale market tend to soften less in a down year than they do in many NFL cities. Buying early for a rivalry game is usually safer than waiting.
Steeler Nation on the Road
Steelers fans have a long reputation for traveling in large numbers, and the team's following, known as Steeler Nation, often makes road games feel partly like home games. That has two effects for ticket buyers.
- For Steelers fans traveling: AFC North road games in Baltimore, Cleveland and Cincinnati are within driving range. Expect plenty of company, and expect those games to cost more than the host team's average game.
- For fans of other teams: a home game against Pittsburgh is often the most expensive ticket on your own team's schedule, partly because traveling Steelers fans compete for the same seats.
Bring a Terrible Towel either way. The gold towel, created by broadcaster Myron Cope in 1975, has raised more than 2.5 million dollars for the Allegheny Valley School since 1996.
Getting to the North Shore
Acrisure Stadium sits at 100 Art Rooney Avenue, a short walk from PNC Park and across the river from downtown.
- The T (light rail): Allegheny Station connects to the stadium by a pedestrian walkway, and North Side Station serves the stadium area as well. Many fans park downtown and ride over.
- Parking: North Shore lots are color-coded (Gold, Red, Blue, Green and Clark lots), plus the newer Champions Garage between the stadium and PNC Park. Passes are sold through ParkMobile.
- Gateway Clipper: the riverboat fleet runs service on game days.
- Walking: downtown hotels are within walking distance via the river bridges.
For lot maps and pass details, see the Acrisure Stadium parking page.
Tailgating and Stadium Rules
Tailgating on the North Shore lots is a big part of Steelers gameday. The lots are operated by ALCO Parking, which sets lot rules and opening times; tailgating is not allowed inside the Champions Garage.
The stadium's A–Z guide lists these policies as of the 2026 season. Check them before you go.
- Gates: open two hours before kickoff, at Gate A East, Gate A West, Gate B, Gate C and the FedEx Great Hall gates.
- Clear-bag policy: NFL-standard clear bags only; see the stadium's clear-bag page for sizes.
- Cashless: cards and mobile wallets only. Cash can be loaded onto prepaid cards at the Great Hall ticket window.
- No re-entry once you leave.
- Smoke-free throughout.
Arrive early enough to walk the FedEx Great Hall, a 40,000-square-foot space on the east side that displays team history and memorabilia. Every GoodSeats order includes guaranteed entry.
From Three Rivers to the 2026 Draft
The Steelers played at Three Rivers Stadium from 1970 to 2000, the era of the Steel Curtain and four Super Bowl titles. Acrisure Stadium replaced it in 2001 and is shared with the University of Pittsburgh Panthers.
- The Immaculate Reception: the 1972 playoff play that launched the franchise's golden decade.
- The Steel Curtain: a 1970s defense led by "Mean" Joe Greene, Jack Lambert and Jack Ham.
- The logo: introduced in 1962 and based on the Steelmark of U.S. Steel; its colors stand for coal, iron ore and scrap steel.
- The 2026 NFL Draft: held April 23–25, 2026, outside Acrisure Stadium and at nearby Point State Park, with a reported record attendance of 805,000 over three days.
The stadium has also hosted the 2011 NHL Winter Classic and a 2017 NHL Stadium Series game. For team history and museum hours, visit the Steelers history page.
Frequently asked questions

Yes. The stadium opened in 2001 as Heinz Field and was renamed Acrisure Stadium in July 2022 after Kraft Heinz declined to renew the naming rights.

How do I get to a Steelers game without driving?
Ride the T light rail to Allegheny Station, which connects to the stadium by a pedestrian walkway, or to North Side Station. The Gateway Clipper riverboats also run on game days.
