How film festival tickets work

A film festival sells screenings, not seats in a single venue. Most premieres play once or twice in the first days, followed by repeat screenings later in the run, and many include a Q&A with the director and cast. The big North American festivals sell four kinds of access, usually in this order:

  • Passes: one credential that admits you to every film in a set window, category or venue without booking each screening. Sundance passholders show the pass and photo ID at the door.
  • Packages: a bundle of ticket credits bought months ahead and redeemed for specific screenings when selection opens.
  • Single tickets: one screening, sold closer to the festival once packages have had first pick.
  • Rush or standby: a line at the venue for seats released at the last minute when a sold-out screening has empty seats.

The practical result: the most anticipated premieres are largely spoken for before single tickets go on sale. Repeat screenings later in the festival and the rush line are how most people without a package see the film everyone is talking about.

Sundance moves to Boulder in 2027

The Sundance Film Festival was founded in Salt Lake City in 1978 as the Utah/US Film Festival, with Robert Redford as its main founder. It moved to Park City in 1981, shifted from September to January and took the Sundance name in 1991. On March 27, 2025, organizers announced that the festival would leave Park City for Boulder, Colorado, beginning in 2027; the Sundance Institute keeps its headquarters and Labs in Utah. Sundance drew 85,000 in-person attendees in Park City in 2025.

The first Boulder festival runs January 21 to 31, 2027. World premieres are concentrated from January 21 to 26, repeat screenings continue through closing weekend, and online screenings run January 28 to 31. Hotel Boulderado serves as festival headquarters. Screening venues include Macky Auditorium, Muenzinger Auditorium and the Roe Green Theatre on the University of Colorado campus, plus the Boulder Theater, eTown Hall, Chautauqua Auditorium, the Dairy Arts Center and the Boulder Public Library's Canyon Theater.

For the 2026 festival, passes and packages went on sale in late October, passholder selection opened in mid-January and single tickets followed two days later. Axios reported that 2027 pass and ticket details would arrive in September, with sales beginning in October. Boulder sits northwest of Denver, and the Denver city guide covers the wider region.

Tribeca Festival in New York

The Tribeca Festival was founded in 2002 by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff to help revive Lower Manhattan after the September 11 attacks. It dropped "Film" from its name in 2021 to reflect programming that now includes episodic work, talks, music, games and immersive art. It presents more than 600 screenings to about 150,000 attendees a year, and the 2026 edition ran June 3 to 14.

Tribeca's seating rules are simple and worth knowing. According to the festival FAQ, all seating is general admission and first come, first served, except galas at the Beacon Theatre and United Palace, which have reserved seats. Lines form about an hour before showtime. When a screening sells out, the Rush line works as a standby queue, with rush tickets priced the same as regular tickets and paid for at entry. Screening tickets are fully transferable. The New York City guide covers the rest of the city's June calendar.

SXSW Film & TV in Austin

South by Southwest added film in 1994, and its Film & TV Festival runs each March in Austin alongside the conference. With the Austin Convention Center under renovation, SXSW operates as a campus-style event at venues across downtown Austin from 2026 through 2028. The 2027 event is scheduled for March 15 to 21.

SXSW is a badge-first festival, and the entry order shows it. Film & TV and Platinum badgeholders can reserve two screenings a day, and reserved badgeholders enter first. Next come general admission advance ticket holders (a very limited number at select screenings), then standby badgeholders holding queue cards, and last, general admission day-of buyers, who can purchase any remaining seats starting 15 minutes before a screening. SXSW advises reserved badgeholders to arrive at least 40 minutes early and advance ticket holders 45 minutes early. Without a badge, aim for second and third screenings, which are less crowded than world premieres. The Austin city guide covers lodging during festival week, when rooms are scarce.

TIFF in Toronto

The Toronto International Film Festival, founded in 1976, takes place in early September in downtown Toronto. Its 51st edition ran September 10 to 20, 2026. It drew an estimated 480,000 attendees in 2016, and its People's Choice Award, voted by audiences, has become an awards-season indicator: past winners include Slumdog Millionaire and The King's Speech, both later Best Picture winners at the Academy Awards.

Gala and premiere venues include Roy Thomson Hall, the Princess of Wales Theatre, the Royal Alexandra Theatre and TIFF Lightbox, the festival's permanent home since 2010. TIFF's Rush system is the classic version. At Rush-eligible screenings, staff count empty seats about 15 minutes before the start and release a limited number of tickets to the line. TIFF recommends joining no earlier than 60 minutes ahead, and a place in line does not guarantee a ticket. For ticket holders at TIFF Lightbox, 30 minutes early counts as on time. Festival sales are final, per TIFF's ticketing help page. The Toronto city guide covers the rest of the September calendar.

Where to sit at a festival screening

Most festival screenings are general admission, so where you sit depends on when you arrive, and arriving early buys you the choice.

  • Center, about two-thirds back: the best balance of screen size and sound in a typical auditorium or converted theater.
  • Front third for a Q&A: closer seats put you nearer the filmmakers after the credits, but the first rows of a cinema strain your neck for a two-hour film.
  • Aisle seats for a tight schedule: premieres often run long with introductions and Q&As. If you have another screening soon after, an aisle seat near the back lets you leave without climbing over a row.
  • Balconies in large halls: in big concert and gala halls, the front of the first balcony often gives a clearer, centered view of the screen than the side orchestra.

Tips for your first film festival

  • Learn the product names early. Passes, packages and single tickets go on sale on different dates, often months apart. Set reminders for each.
  • Favor repeat screenings. The same film a few days after its premiere is far easier to get into, and buzz from the first screening tells you what is worth seeing.
  • Budget time for lines. General admission seating and rush lines mean arriving 30 to 60 minutes early is normal.
  • Check transfer rules before buying from anyone else. Tribeca screening tickets are transferable, while Sundance passholders must show photo ID with the pass.
  • Dress for the season. Sundance in Boulder is a January festival, and lines form outdoors.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the Sundance Film Festival in 2027?

In Boulder, Colorado, from January 21 to 31, 2027. It is the first edition after about four decades based primarily in Park City, Utah.

What is a rush line at a film festival?

A standby line for sold-out screenings. Shortly before the film starts, staff release any empty seats to people in line, so a place in the rush line does not guarantee entry.

What is the difference between a festival pass and a package?

A pass admits you to all films in a set window, category or venue without booking each one. A package is a bundle of ticket credits you redeem for specific screenings once selection opens.

When is the Toronto International Film Festival?

TIFF takes place in early September in downtown Toronto. The 2026 festival ran September 10 to 20.

Can you see SXSW films without a badge?

Yes, in limited numbers. Some screenings offer general admission advance tickets, and remaining seats are sold to the public starting 15 minutes before the screening, after badgeholders are seated.
