What AfroFuture is and when it takes place
AfroFuture is a two-day music and culture festival held in late December at El Wak Stadium in Accra, Ghana. It was founded in 2019 under the name Afrochella and ran under that name through its December 2022 edition; it has been called AfroFuture since. The most recent Accra edition took place December 28 and 29, 2025, under the theme African Nostalgia, with the Nigerian Afrobeats star Asake headlining.
The festival is organized by Culture Management Group (CMG), co-founded by Abdul Karim Abdullah. Its pitch goes beyond music: alongside the main stage, AfroFuture surrounds the weekend with fashion, food, art and design marketplaces aimed at Africans at home and in the diaspora. It is one of several large cultural events that crowd Accra's December calendar, along with festivals such as Afro Nation, which makes the city one of the busiest destinations on the continent in the last two weeks of the year.
As of October 2026, the festival's site had not yet posted details for a December 2026 Accra edition. The late-December timing has been consistent, but confirm dates on the official site before booking flights.
From Afrochella to AfroFuture: the name change
The festival launched as Afrochella in 2019, a name that echoed the California festival Coachella. In October 2022, Coachella's organizers sued the Afrochella organizers for trademark infringement. The last event billed as Afrochella took place on December 28 and 29, 2022, at El Wak Stadium, with an Afrofuturism theme, and the festival has run as AfroFuture since then.
The name changed; the formula largely did not. The venue, the late-December slot and the mix of West African headliners with diaspora DJs and culture programming carried over. Anyone searching resale listings or old social posts will still see both names, and they refer to the same festival.
The calendar has shifted once. In December 2024, CMG used the usual festival dates for a smaller event called Culture Beach Jam at Accra Polo Beach, planned for up to 8,000 people, and brought the full AfroFuture festival back to El Wak Stadium in December 2025.
Headliners and lineup history
The lineup leans on the biggest names in Afrobeats and Ghanaian music, with diaspora DJs and occasional American rap headliners. A sample of past bills:
- Early editions: Tiwa Savage, Sarkodie, Samini, Wande Coal and Distruction Boyz.
- 2021 (as Afrochella): Wizkid and Stonebwoy.
- 2022 (as Afrochella): Burna Boy headlined, with Stonebwoy, Asake, Ayra Starr, Rema, Black Sherif, Meek Mill, Camidoh, Gyakie and Juls.
- 2025 (Accra): Asake headlined, with King Paluta, Moliy, TxC and Mavo, and DJ sets from DJ Obi and Obi's House, ADDJ, DJ Loft, and K-Dawg and EZPass.
The brand has also traveled. In August 2025, AfroFuture staged a two-stage edition in Detroit at Bedrock's Douglass Site, headlined by Davido, Kaytranada, Ludmilla, Gims, Flavour, Lojay and Tee Grizzley. In September 2026 it presented a Champion Sound turntable event in New York City. Treat these as separate events from the Accra festival, with their own tickets.
Ticket types and how demand behaves
AfroFuture's ticketing is simpler than the large American festivals. Recent editions have used two core tiers:
- General admission (GA) covers entry to the festival grounds and stage area for the day or weekend purchased.
- VIP adds expedited entry, a premium viewing area, separate restrooms and a dedicated bar and food area, based on the tier description published for the 2025 Detroit edition.
The exact tiers and perks change each year. For the Accra festival, the official site has pointed buyers to Tix.Africa, a Ghanaian ticketing platform.
Demand follows the December travel season. The festival is built to connect Africans at home with the diaspora, many of whom travel to Ghana for the holidays, so interest builds early and peaks once the headliner is announced. Because the festival competes with other December events in Accra for the same audience, the headliner announcement is the biggest single driver of resale activity. VIP areas are smaller and tend to tighten first.
Planning a December trip to Accra
Most out-of-town attendees build AfroFuture into a longer holiday stay. The festival has added satellite events around the main weekend: in 2025, a Battle of Jollof basketball game at the Bukom Boxing Arena on December 27, a Fashion Night Out at the Nubuke Museum on December 30, and a New Year's Eve event at La Palm Royal Beach Hotel on December 31. Most of these are ticketed separately.
- Book lodging early. Several major events share the same two weeks, so hotels and short-term rentals near the stadium and in central Accra fill fast.
- Plan your ride. El Wak Stadium sits inside Accra, and traffic around the venue is heavy at the start and end of each night. Arrange rideshare or a driver in advance rather than hoping for a pickup at 2 a.m.
- Check entry rules for Ghana. Visa and health-entry requirements depend on your passport; check them with Ghana's embassy or consulate well before you travel.
- Consider a package. AfroFuture runs a Visit Africa program with curated culture-focused itineraries, which some visitors use to handle the planning.
What to expect on festival days
Expect an evening-into-night event. Sets build through the afternoon and the headliner closes late, so plan for a long day on your feet in Accra. Bring a refillable bottle if the current rules allow one, light clothing, and a portable phone charger.
The 2022 edition drew criticism over stage conditions after Ayra Starr fell during her set and called on organizers to clean the stage between performances, a reminder that production at fast-growing festivals can be uneven. Organizers publish entry rules, prohibited items and bag guidance before each edition; those rules change from year to year, so read the current list on the official AfroFuture site before you go.
