What Beyond Wonderland is and where it happens now

Beyond Wonderland is an electronic dance music festival produced by Insomniac Events, the promoter founded by Pasquale Rotella, and built around an Alice in Wonderland theme of costumed characters, art installations and themed stages. As of October 2026 it runs three separate editions in the United States, each with its own tickets:

  • Beyond Wonderland SoCal at the NOS Events Center in San Bernardino, California, in late March. The 2026 edition ran March 27–28, and the festival lists March 26–27, 2027.
  • Beyond Wonderland at The Gorge at the Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Washington, in late June, with on-site camping. The 2026 edition ran June 27–28, and the 2027 dates are June 25–27, with the first day for campers only.
  • Beyond Wonderland Midwest, held as Beyond Wonderland Chicago at Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island on June 6–7, 2026. For 2027 it moves to Chicagoland Speedway in the Joliet area, expands to three days (June 11–13) and adds camping.

There is no longer a Bay Area edition. Beyond Wonderland ran in Northern California from 2012 through 2015, first in an Oakland parking lot and then at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, before Insomniac dropped it in 2016 to focus on other events. The brand has also been staged in Mexico (from 2017) and Colombia (from 2019).

How the festival grew, and who has played it

Insomniac launched Beyond Wonderland on March 20, 2010, at the NOS Events Center in San Bernardino as a springtime sister event to its Nocturnal Wonderland festival. That first edition sold out. The SoCal event later moved to the amphitheater now called Glen Helen Amphitheater, where it added camping in 2015, then returned to the NOS Events Center in 2018 and dropped camping. The Gorge edition debuted in October 2021 and moved to June from 2022.

The lineups span house, trance, dubstep, drum and bass and bass music. A sample of billed artists:

  • 2010 SoCal: Paul van Dyk, Sander van Doorn, Groove Armada and Pendulum.
  • 2013 Bay Area: David Guetta, Avicii, Tiësto, Calvin Harris, Hardwell and Zeds Dead.
  • 2019 SoCal: surprise sets from Deadmau5, REZZ and ZHU.
  • 2026 SoCal: Tiësto, Zedd, Alison Wonderland, Alok, SLANDER, Steve Angello and GRiZ.
  • 2026 Chicago: Tiësto, Zedd, Zeds Dead, DJ Snake and Excision.
  • 2026 Gorge: Seven Lions, Kaskade, FISHER, REZZ, Green Velvet, Sub Focus and Wilkinson.

Insomniac typically announces each edition's lineup a few months before the dates, and lineup day is when resale demand jumps.

Pass types: GA, GA+, VIP and camping

All three editions use the same three core tiers, sold mainly as two-day passes (three days for the 2027 Midwest edition) through Front Gate Tickets:

  • General admission (GA) covers festival entry, free water refills, and food, drink and bar access.
  • GA+ adds expedited entry and premium air-conditioned restrooms. For a crowded single-venue event, the faster entry line is the main reason to pay for it.
  • VIP adds expedited entry, dedicated viewing areas, exclusive food and drink options and lounge access; at SoCal it also includes Wi-Fi, and VIP there is 21 and over.

Camping is where the editions differ most.

  • SoCal has no camping, and sleeping in cars in the festival parking lot is not allowed.
  • The Gorge offers three nights of camping with two days of music, with tiers that range from standard sites (Fox Den) and premier sites (Cheshire Cove) to terrace and front-yard sites and glamping options such as Vineyard Glamping and Royal Shipyard.
  • Midwest 2027 introduces on-site car and RV camping, with four nights included.

Demand pattern: SoCal is the oldest and most concentrated edition. The 2019 event sold out its first day in under 24 hours, and the 2024 edition sold out in about two weeks. The Gorge sells as a camping weekend, so the better camping tiers tend to go before GA does.

Choosing an edition

The three editions feel quite different even with a shared theme.

  • SoCal is a two-day event at an events center in San Bernardino, with no camping. It suits fans who want a big lineup without a camping trip, and it is the easiest edition to reach from a major metro area.
  • The Gorge is a destination weekend. The amphitheater is in rural central Washington, far from any large city, so camping is close to essential and the outdoor setting is a big part of the appeal.
  • Midwest changes most in 2027, moving from a lakefront pavilion in Chicago to a speedway with camping and later hours. Treat the 2027 edition as a new event and read the updated guides closely.

Crowding is worth weighing. Coverage of the 2024 SoCal edition described overcrowding, including about 1,500 people coming over the fence. Arriving early and setting a meeting point with your group helps at any edition.

Rules and policies to know

Insomniac publishes rules per edition, and they change from year to year. As of the 2027 SoCal FAQ:

  • Age: no one under 18 is admitted, with or without a guardian, and VIP requires attendees to be 21 or older.
  • Re-entry: ins and outs are not allowed, so once you enter you stay inside.
  • Parking: cars left in the lot during non-festival hours are towed, and sleeping in vehicles is prohibited.
  • Items: the acceptable and prohibited items lists are published on the edition's info pages.

Rules at The Gorge and the Midwest edition, including age limits and camping rules, are set separately. Read the specific edition's FAQ on the Beyond Wonderland SoCal FAQ or the matching page for your edition before you buy.

The Gorge has a safety footnote: the second day of the 2023 edition was canceled after a shooting outside the amphitheater. Large camping events depend on campground security, so review the edition's safety guidance and stay with your group.
