What Lollapalooza is and when it runs
Lollapalooza is a four-day music festival held each year in late July or early August in Grant Park, on Chicago's downtown lakefront. The 2026 edition ran July 30 to August 2 and advertised more than 170 artists across eight stages. Daily capacity is about 115,000, and organizers reported roughly 460,000 total attendance over the four days in 2024.
Unlike destination festivals, Lollapalooza has no camping. You sleep in a hotel or at home, walk or ride transit to the park, and leave each night. That makes it one of the easiest major festivals to attend for a single day or as part of a Chicago trip.
From touring festival to Grant Park fixture
Perry Farrell created Lollapalooza in 1991 as a farewell tour for his band Jane's Addiction. The first show was in Phoenix on July 18, 1991, and the tour ended in Enumclaw, Washington, on August 28. That first bill also included Siouxsie and the Banshees, Nine Inch Nails, Ice-T and Body Count, Butthole Surfers and Rollins Band, and it helped define the alternative rock era.
The tour ran every summer through 1997, returned briefly in 2003, and was canceled in 2004. In 2005 Farrell partnered with Capital Sports Entertainment (now C3 Presents) to stage it as a destination festival in Grant Park, where it has been held ever since, apart from a digital edition in 2020. Live Nation took a controlling interest in C3 Presents in 2014. The festival grew to four days in 2016 for its 25th anniversary.
The brand has also spread abroad, with editions in Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Germany, France and India.
Headliners in the Chicago years
Grant Park headliners have tracked the shift from rock toward pop, hip-hop and global acts. A sample by year:
- 2005: Weezer, Pixies, The Killers and Death Cab for Cutie.
- 2008: Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine, Kanye West and Nine Inch Nails.
- 2010: Lady Gaga, Green Day and Soundgarden.
- 2014: Arctic Monkeys, Calvin Harris and Skrillex.
- 2019: The Strokes, Childish Gambino, Ariana Grande and Twenty One Pilots.
- 2022: Metallica, Dua Lipa, J. Cole and Green Day.
- 2023: Karol G, The 1975, Lana Del Rey, Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
- 2024: Hozier, Stray Kids, SZA, Megan Thee Stallion and Blink-182.
- 2025: Tyler, the Creator, Luke Combs, Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter.
- 2026: Lorde, Charli xcx, Olivia Dean and Tate McRae topped the daily bills.
Recent lineups mix arena-level pop stars with K-pop, Latin and electronic headliners, which spreads demand across all four days rather than concentrating it on one night.
Passes, tiers and how demand moves
Lollapalooza sells passes, not seats. You pick a length (the full four days or, when offered, a single day) and a tier. General admission covers the grounds and every stage; premium tiers, which the festival markets for their extra perks, typically add separate entrances, dedicated viewing areas, lounges and better restrooms. Tier names and perks are set each year, so read the listing for exactly what a pass includes.
- Four-day passes suit visitors and anyone interested in artists spread across the weekend. They usually cost less per day than buying days separately.
- Single days make sense when one headliner is the draw. Single-day demand follows the headliners, so the day with the biggest draw usually sells through first.
- Premium tiers matter most on a hot, crowded Saturday, when shade, restrooms and a reserved viewing area save real time.
Prices tend to climb after the lineup and daily schedule are announced and can soften in the final days if a day has not sold out. Passes are wristbands that must be worn securely and not removed between days; the festival replaces a lost or damaged band only once, for the original purchaser. Every GoodSeats order is backed by a 100% guarantee.
Getting to Grant Park
Grant Park sits between Michigan Avenue and Lake Michigan in the Loop, so transit is the simplest way in. The festival points visitors to CTA trains and buses, Metra commuter rail and Pace buses, and suggests the Regional Transportation Authority trip planner.
- Parking: the Millennium Garages beneath Grant Park offer festival parking, and the festival recommends the Lakeside or Grant Park garages to avoid the heaviest traffic.
- Bikes: as of 2026, a free bike valet run by the nonprofit REVERB operates at Balbo Drive and Michigan Avenue, with self-park racks at the same corner.
- Rideshare: Uber pickup and drop-off zones are set up near the park, with directions in the app. Expect surge pricing and long waits right after the last sets.
- Airports: O'Hare (ORD) and Midway (MDW) both connect to downtown by CTA rail.
Hotels in the Loop and South Loop let you walk to the gates and step out for a break. Current transit details are on the Lollapalooza getting-there page.
Bag rules, re-entry and what to bring
These rules come from the festival's 2026 help center. They change from year to year, so check the current policy before you go.
- Bags: clutches and fanny packs of 6 by 9 inches or smaller need not be clear but may have only one pocket. Any larger bag must be clear and smaller than 12 by 6 by 12 inches.
- Hydration packs are allowed if they are emptied of liquid and have no more than two main compartments and one small one.
- Allowed: empty reusable, plastic or aluminum water bottles, and non-aerosol sunscreen of 3.4 ounces or less.
- Not allowed: blankets, sheets and towels, chairs, umbrellas, outside food or drinks, and totems or flag poles.
- Re-entry: you may leave and come back two additional times after first entering, scanning your wristband and passing security each time.
Bring comfortable shoes for paved paths and grass, a light rain layer since umbrellas are banned, earplugs and a charged phone. Pick a fixed meeting point, such as a landmark near Buckingham Fountain, in case your group splits up.
