Who the Mavericks are
The Dallas Mavericks play home games at American Airlines Center in the Victory Park area just north of downtown Dallas, with a regular season that runs from late October to mid-April. The franchise entered the NBA in 1980 and plays in the Western Conference's Southwest Division.
The Mavericks have reached the NBA Finals three times, in 2006, 2011 and 2024, and won the title in 2011 by beating the Miami Heat, the same opponent that had beaten them in 2006. Dirk Nowitzki, who spent his entire 21-season career in Dallas, is the franchise's defining player, and a statue of him was unveiled outside the arena on Christmas Day 2022. Five numbers are retired: 12, 15, 22, 24 and 41.
Ownership changed in 2023, when the Adelson and Dumont families bought a majority stake from Mark Cuban, who kept a minority share. The rivalries that fill the building are close to home: the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets, the other two Texas teams in the division.
American Airlines Center: levels and layout
American Airlines Center opened on July 17, 2001, at 2500 Victory Avenue, replacing Reunion Arena, the Mavericks' home from 1980 to 2001. It seats 19,200 for basketball, or about 21,100 with standing room, and the Mavericks share it with the NHL's Dallas Stars.
The seating map is easiest to read by level name:
- Plaza Level (100s): the lower bowl, closest to the floor, with courtside seats along the sidelines.
- Platinum Club and suites: the premium middle tiers, with club access and in-seat amenities.
- Terrace Level (300s): the upper bowl. Sections run about 20 rows (A through T). Rows E and below are reached directly from the section entrance and are sometimes sold as "Terrace Preferred"; the higher rows require an extra staircase.
Victory Plaza, the outdoor space beside the arena, is the usual gathering spot before games.
Picking seats for a Mavs game
Plaza Level sidelines
The best basketball seats are the Plaza Level sideline sections, ideally from around row 6 upward. That height clears the courtside row and the bench area while keeping you close to the floor. Courtside seats are the premium tier and are priced as an experience; seats directly behind the benches can have players and staff standing in your line of sight.
Plaza corners and baselines
The corners are the best compromise in the lower bowl, with a full-court view on an angle at a lower price than center court. Seats behind the baskets are fine for watching one end, but the far basket is hard to judge and the stanchion can block low rows directly behind the hoop.
The Terrace Level
For budget seats, the Terrace Level is where to look, and the rows matter more than the section. Terrace Preferred rows (E and below) near center court, such as section 326, give a clear sideline view from height. The high rows behind the baskets are the farthest seats in the building, and reaching them takes an extra climb, which matters for anyone with mobility concerns.
Premium options
The Platinum Club suits fans who want comfort and food access along with a good view. Compare it against a mid-row Plaza seat before buying; the right choice depends on whether you value the amenities or the proximity.
The season and the games that sell out first
The NBA preseason is in early October. The 82-game regular season, 41 games at home, runs from late October to mid-April. NBA Cup group games, part of the in-season tournament the league added in 2023–24, are played mostly on Tuesday and Friday nights in November and count in the standings. The play-in tournament is in mid-April, and the playoffs run through June.
Demand at American Airlines Center tends to spike for:
- Texas rivals: games against the Spurs and Rockets, which bring traveling fans up I-35 and I-45.
- Star visitors: the league's marquee players and contending teams, and any return of a former Maverick.
- Holidays and weekends: the late-December holiday stretch and Friday and Saturday nights.
- Playoff dates: home playoff games sell quickly, and resale prices move with each game of the series.
Weeknight games against Eastern Conference teams in January and February usually offer the widest choice of seats.
DART, parking and arena policies
American Airlines Center is one of the easier NBA arenas to reach by transit. DART light rail and the Trinity Railway Express (the commuter line to Fort Worth) both stop at Victory Station, beside the arena. Ticketmaster's venue guide lists more than 5,000 parking spaces nearby, many within two blocks, with lots opening two hours before events. Parking near the arena can be bought in advance through the venue.
As published by the arena, current rules include:
- Bags: wristlets, clutches and purses up to 14 by 14 by 6 inches are permitted, while backpacks and large totes are not. Medical and parenting bags are allowed after inspection.
- Tickets: all tickets are digital, held in the Dallas Mavs app or a Ticketmaster account.
- Payment: concessions are cashless, with Cash-2-Card machines on the Plaza Level.
The arena's published guidelines were last updated in 2022, so confirm them on the American Airlines Center site before you go. Every GoodSeats order is backed by a 100% guarantee.
From Reunion Arena to Victory Park, and what comes next
The Mavericks spent their first 21 seasons at Reunion Arena, downtown near the Reunion Tower. The move to American Airlines Center in 2001 coincided with the rise of the Nowitzki teams. The building hosted the 2006, 2011 and 2024 NBA Finals games in Dallas, and the 2011 title, won against Miami, is still the high point of the franchise.
The arena may not be the team's home forever. The Mavericks' lease runs through 2031. In April 2025 the team's chief executive said the Mavericks were seeking a site for a new basketball-focused arena district within Dallas, targeting the 2031–32 season, with land near the former Texas Stadium site in Irving, tied to a Las Vegas Sands resort proposal, as an alternative. As of that reporting no site had been chosen. Until a new arena opens, American Airlines Center remains the home court.
