The Stars franchise in brief
The Dallas Stars play home games at American Airlines Center in Victory Park, just north of downtown Dallas, and the NHL regular season runs from early October to mid-April. The team plays in the Western Conference's Central Division.
The franchise began as the Minnesota North Stars, one of the NHL's 1967 expansion teams, and moved to Dallas for the 1993–94 season. Dallas won the Stanley Cup in 1999, when Brett Hull scored the clinching goal in triple overtime against the Buffalo Sabres, a goal still argued over because of the crease rule in force at the time. Joe Nieuwendyk won the Conn Smythe Trophy (the award for the most valuable player of the playoffs) that spring. The franchise has reached the Stanley Cup Final five times: 1981 and 1991 as Minnesota, and 1999, 2000 and 2020 as Dallas.
Six numbers hang in the rafters, including Mike Modano's 9, Jere Lehtinen's 26 and Sergei Zubov's 56, alongside three North Stars-era honorees. The rivalries that fill the building are with the St. Louis Blues, the Chicago Blackhawks and the Colorado Avalanche, all longtime Central Division and playoff opponents.
American Airlines Center for hockey
American Airlines Center opened on July 17, 2001, at 2500 Victory Avenue, replacing Reunion Arena, where the Stars played from 1993 to 2001. Hockey capacity is listed at 18,532 on the arena's Wikipedia entry, while the team's entry gives 18,584; with standing room the building holds a little over 19,300. The Stars share the arena with the NBA's Dallas Mavericks.
The bowl reads in three main tiers:
- Plaza Level (100s): the lower bowl wrapped around the glass, with rows lettered from the boards upward.
- Platinum Level (200s): the club and suite tier, with premium amenities and a full view of the ice.
- Terrace Level (300s): the upper bowl, steeper and farther from the ice but with a clean overhead view of plays developing.
For Stars games, the Stars bench sits in front of section 119 and the visitors' bench in front of section 118, according to a widely used seating guide. Seat 1 in a section is the one closest to the lower-numbered neighboring section.
Where to sit for a Stars game
Center ice
The sideline sections between the blue lines, roughly 105–108 on one side and 117–120 on the bench side, give the best all-around hockey view. Seating guides recommend row 10 or higher in the Plaza Level so you look over the glass and the bench area rather than through the stanchions and reflections.
The end where the Stars shoot twice
The Stars attack the net in front of section 112 in the first and third periods, and the visitors shoot twice toward section 101. Fans who want to see Dallas goals up close pick seats around 112, which also tend to cost less than center ice. The trade-off is that play at the far end is hard to judge from low rows.
The glass
Row A in the end sections is sold as an on-the-glass experience with lounge access on Stars nights. The glass seats are about sound, speed and contact along the boards, not about following the play; the far half of the ice is difficult to see from the first rows.
Platinum and Terrace
The Platinum Level suits fans who want club comfort and a high-enough angle to read the game. For budget seats, the Terrace Level sideline sections give a full-ice view, and the lower Terrace rows are the better buy than the highest Terrace corners.
Season shape and the games that sell first
NHL preseason games are played in late September. The 82-game regular season, 41 games at home, runs from early October to mid-April, and the playoffs run from mid-April into June.
Demand at American Airlines Center tends to rise for:
- Central Division rivals: the Blues, the Avalanche and the Blackhawks, matchups with long playoff histories.
- Recent playoff opponents: the Edmonton Oilers beat Dallas in the 2024 and 2025 Western Conference Finals, and the Vegas Golden Knights did in 2023, which keeps those visits lively.
- Weekends and holidays: Friday and Saturday nights and the late-December stretch.
- Playoff dates: home playoff games sell quickly, and resale prices move with each game of a series.
Weeknight games against Eastern Conference opponents in January and February usually offer the widest choice of seats. Every order is backed by a 100% guarantee.
Getting to Victory Park and gameday rules
Victory Station, a short walk from the arena, is served by DART's Green and Orange light rail lines and by the Trinity Railway Express commuter train from Fort Worth, which makes rail the simplest way in from much of the Metroplex. Driving fans use the garages and surface lots around Victory Park; arriving early beats the post-game traffic on I-35E.
As of the arena's most recent published guidelines, purses and bags must be no larger than about 14 by 14 by 6 inches, backpacks are not allowed, the building is cashless, and tickets are digital. Policies change, so check the American Airlines Center fan safety guidelines before you go.
Victory Plaza, the open space beside the arena, is the usual pregame meeting point, and the bars and restaurants of Victory Park and nearby Uptown fill up before puck drop.
Notable moments in Dallas hockey
The Stars won the Presidents' Trophy (the award for the best regular-season record) in 1997–98 and 1998–99, then won the 1999 Cup and returned to the Final in 2000. In 2020 they reached the Final again inside the playoff bubble in Edmonton and lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games.
On January 1, 2020, the Stars hosted the Winter Classic at the Cotton Bowl at Fair Park, beating the Nashville Predators 4–2 before 85,630 fans, one of the largest crowds in NHL history. Mike Modano's number 9 was retired in 2014, Lehtinen's 26 in 2017 and Zubov's 56 in 2022.
The team's AHL affiliate (its top minor-league club) is the Texas Stars, and its ECHL affiliate is the Idaho Steelheads.
