FIFA's annual club title, explained

The FIFA Intercontinental Cup is an annual club soccer tournament, first held in 2024, that brings together the reigning champions of FIFA's six confederations and crowns a world club champion each year. It is played as a knockout bracket from late summer to December, and the champion of Europe's UEFA Champions League receives a bye straight to the final. Paris Saint-Germain are the holders after winning the 2025 final.

It fills the slot the old FIFA Club World Cup held from 2000 to 2023. When FIFA expanded the Club World Cup to 32 teams on a four-year cycle, starting with the 2025 edition in the United States, the confederations asked for an annual meeting of their champions to continue. FIFA treats the Intercontinental Cup as the direct continuation of the annual world title.

Do not confuse it with the older Intercontinental Cup (1960–2004), a match between the champions of Europe and South America that was run by UEFA and CONMEBOL rather than FIFA.

The bracket: four rounds, each with its own trophy

The six qualifiers come from the AFC Champions League Elite (Asia), the CAF Champions League (Africa), the CONCACAF Champions Cup (North and Central America and the Caribbean), the Copa Libertadores (South America), the OFC Professional League (Oceania) and the UEFA Champions League (Europe).

  • African–Asian–Pacific Cup play-off: the Oceania champion plays the champion of Asia or Africa, hosted by the club from the higher-ranked country.
  • African–Asian–Pacific Cup: the winner meets the other Asian or African champion, again at the higher-ranked club's home.
  • Derby of the Americas: the Copa Libertadores and CONCACAF champions meet at a neutral venue.
  • Challenger Cup: the two second-round winners meet at a neutral venue.
  • Final: the Challenger Cup winner faces the European champion at a neutral venue.

Tied matches go to 30 minutes of extra time and then penalties. Each round awards its own trophy, and the champion earns the right to wear the FIFA Champions Badge on its shirt until the next final.

Where and when matches are played

The schedule splits in two. The early African–Asian–Pacific matches are played at a club's home stadium from late August through September, while the Derby of the Americas, Challenger Cup and final are staged together at neutral venues in December.

  • 2024: the early rounds were played in Al Ain (UAE) and Cairo; the final three matches were in Qatar, at Stadium 974 in Doha and Lusail Stadium.
  • 2025: the early rounds were played in Cairo and Jeddah; the final three matches were all at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar.
  • 2026: the first round was played August 26 at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah, where Al-Ahli beat Auckland FC 1–0, and Mamelodi Sundowns beat Al-Ahli 2–1 on September 19 at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria. As of mid-September 2026, the venues for the December rounds had not been announced.

For 2026, Toluca of Mexico plays the Copa Libertadores champion in the Derby of the Americas, the winner meets Mamelodi Sundowns in the Challenger Cup, and that winner faces Paris Saint-Germain in the final. Check the official schedule for confirmed venues and dates.

How tickets work

FIFA sells tickets for the neutral-site matches itself, through its official tournament pages, and in 2025 it ran a Visa cardholder presale for the final three matches before the general sale. For the early rounds at club stadiums, check the host club's own ticket announcements. Resale fills in where official inventory runs out.

Demand varies widely from match to match, and attendance shows it:

  • The final draws the crowd. The 2024 final at Lusail Stadium drew 67,249; the 2025 final at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium drew 42,150.
  • Neutral-site semifinal rounds can be thin. The 2025 Derby of the Americas drew 7,108 and the Challenger Cup 8,368, so tickets for those matches are usually easy to find.
  • Home-ground early rounds depend on the host club. Al-Ahli drew 49,284 at home in Jeddah in 2025 and 46,628 in 2026.
  • Traveling fan bases move demand. A South American giant or a Mexican club with a large following lifts interest in the December matches more than the bracket does.

GoodSeats orders carry no digital transfer fees, which helps when tickets for an overseas match arrive electronically.

Where to sit and what match day is like

In 2024 and 2025 the December matches were played in Qatar stadiums that were 2022 World Cup venues, among them Lusail Stadium and the rebuilt Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, both designed for soccer with seating close to the pitch. A few choices still matter:

  • Sideline seats near midfield give the best view of the shape of play and are the first to go for the final.
  • Behind the goals is where organized supporter groups gather, especially for South American clubs. Sit there for the noise, not for the view of the far end.
  • Upper tiers on the sideline are the value pick at a lightly attended semifinal, where you can often see the whole pitch with space around you.
  • Pick your end deliberately. Rival supporters may be seated at opposite ends, so check which end a listing is in if you are cheering for one club.

Venues for the December rounds can change from year to year, so confirm the stadium and the local transit options once FIFA publishes them. Security screening and entry rules are set by the organizer for each match; check the current guidance on FIFA's tournament page before you go.

The first finals and their results

The FIFA Council approved the tournament on March 14, 2023, three months after it voted to expand the Club World Cup. The trophy follows the design of the 2005–2023 Club World Cup trophy, a gold globe on six pillars, and a new one is made each year.

  • 2024: Real Madrid beat Pachuca 3–0 in the final at Lusail Stadium on December 18, 2024. Pachuca had reached it by beating Botafogo 3–0 in the Derby of the Americas and Al Ahly on penalties in the Challenger Cup.
  • 2025: Paris Saint-Germain beat Flamengo on penalties after a 1–1 draw in the final on December 17, 2025, the club's first world title. Flamengo had beaten Cruz Azul 2–1 and Pyramids 2–0 to reach it.

Real Madrid could not defend the title in 2025 because the berth goes to the current European champion, and Arsenal had knocked them out of the 2024–25 Champions League.
