What the Eastern Conference Finals decide
The NBA Eastern Conference Finals are the third round of the NBA playoffs: a best-of-seven series, played in late May, between the last two teams left in the East. The winner takes the conference title and advances to the NBA Finals against the Western Conference champion. There is no neutral site. Every game is played in one of the two teams' home arenas, so where you go depends entirely on which teams survive the first two rounds.
The playoff field works like this. Sixteen teams qualify, eight from each conference. The top six in the East by winning percentage advance directly, and the seventh through tenth seeds play the play-in tournament (in use since 2021) for the last two spots. Two rounds of best-of-seven series then reduce the East to two teams.
The winner receives the Bob Cousy Trophy, named in 2022 for the Hall of Famer who helped build the players' union. The same year, the league began naming a conference finals MVP.
How home court and the schedule work
Every NBA playoff round uses a 2-2-1-1-1 format; the NBA Finals switched to it from 2-3-2 in 2014, putting all four rounds on the same pattern. The team with home-court advantage, determined by seeding, hosts Games 1, 2, 5 and 7. Its opponent hosts Games 3, 4 and 6.
That structure has direct consequences for buyers:
- Each arena is guaranteed two games. Games 1 and 2 happen at the higher seed's arena, and Games 3 and 4 at the lower seed's, regardless of how the series goes.
- Later games are conditional. Game 5 is played only if neither team has swept, Game 6 only if the series is not over in five, and Game 7 only if it is tied three games each.
- A home team can be eliminated before its last scheduled date. A 4–0 sweep, which happened in the 2024 and 2026 East finals, means Games 5 through 7 are never played.
The NBA posts dates for every possible game, but exact dates and tip times are often confirmed only when the matchup is set. If you are traveling, book refundable hotels until the series is confirmed.
How tickets for a conference final are sold
Conference finals tickets do not exist in a normal sense until a team qualifies. Teams sell playoff tickets round by round, and the structure is consistent across the league:
- Season-ticket holders first. Full-season members typically hold the right to buy their seats for each home playoff game, and they account for much of each arena.
- Limited public sales. What remains is released by the team, usually only days before the round starts, once the opponent and schedule are known.
- Resale is where most fans buy. Season-ticket holders who cannot attend list their seats, and resale listings often appear before the team's own public sale.
Demand moves with the series. Game 1 carries opening-night energy. A potential clinching game at home, and above all a Game 7, commands the most. A team trailing 0–3 sees softer demand for Game 4, while a team leading 3–0 has fans chasing a home clincher. Large-market fan bases and teams ending long title droughts push demand higher still.
Where to sit in the arena for a playoff game
Most NBA arenas follow the same basic plan, so the same seat logic applies whichever East team is hosting.
- Courtside and floor seats. Seats on the floor along the sideline are the closest view of the game and the scarcest seats in the building. Floor seats behind the baseline sit at court level but lose depth perception at the far end.
- Lower bowl, sideline. The 100-level sections along the sidelines, roughly between the free-throw lines, are the best overall balance of view and atmosphere. Rows 10 to 20 sit high enough to see plays develop over the players on the floor.
- Lower bowl, behind the baskets. These sections are closer than the upper level but show the far end of the court foreshortened. They are usually priced below the sideline.
- Upper level. The playoff crowd in the upper bowl is often the loudest in the building. Sideline seats in the first rows of the upper level give a complete view of spacing and are the usual entry point to a conference final.
Many teams stage giveaways at playoff home games; check the team's site for game-night details. Check your arena's current bag and mobile-ticket policy before you go.
Recent Eastern Conference Finals
The East has seen long runs of dominance and a stretch of rotating winners:
- 2015 to 2018: the Cleveland Cavaliers won four straight East titles, beating Atlanta, Toronto and Boston twice.
- 2019: Toronto beat Milwaukee 4–2.
- 2020 to 2023: Miami beat Boston in 2020 and 2023, Milwaukee beat Atlanta in 2021, and Boston beat Miami in 2022. Both the 2022 and 2023 series went seven games.
- 2024: Boston swept Indiana 4–0.
- 2025: Indiana beat New York 4–2.
- 2026: New York swept Cleveland 4–0.
The Boston Celtics hold the most Eastern Conference titles, with 11, and Boston, Miami and Cleveland appear repeatedly in the recent list. Matchups that repeat across seasons tend to carry rivalry pricing in later meetings.
How the conference finals came to be
The round predates conferences. The Basketball Association of America, the NBA's forerunner, first played division finals in 1949. When the league realigned into two conferences in 1970, the division finals became the conference finals.
The series length grew over time: best-of-three from 1949 to 1950, best-of-five from 1951 to 1956, and best-of-seven since 1957. Conference champions have received trophies since 2001, redesigned in 2022 with a silver basketball divided into four sections, one for qualifying for the playoffs and one for each round won.

Frequently asked questions
When are the NBA Eastern Conference Finals played?
The conference finals are typically played in late May, after the first two playoff rounds and before the NBA Finals in June.
Where are the Eastern Conference Finals held?
There is no neutral site. Games are played in the home arenas of the two teams, with the higher seed hosting Games 1, 2, 5 and 7.
