The Celtics in brief: the league's most decorated franchise
The Boston Celtics play home games at TD Garden, the arena built above North Station, from mid-October through mid-April, with playoff games after that. Founded in 1946 as one of the league's original eight teams, the Celtics hold the NBA record with 18 championships: 1957, eight straight from 1959 to 1966, 1968, 1969, 1974, 1976, 1981, 1984, 1986, 2008 and 2024.
The name nods to Boston's large Irish population and to the Original Celtics, a barnstorming team of the 1920s. The franchise has retired 23 jersey numbers, more than any other American sports team, and its mascot is Lucky the Leprechaun.
- The Russell era (1956–1969): 11 titles in 13 seasons with Bill Russell at center.
- The Bird era (1979–1992): Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parish won three titles in the 1980s.
- The 2008 title: Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen ended a 22-year championship gap.
- Rivalries: the Lakers (12 Finals meetings), the 76ers (22 playoff series), the Knicks and, more recently, the Heat.
Loge, Balcony and courtside: where to sit at TD Garden
TD Garden seats 19,156 for basketball, and it has two main seating tiers. The Loge (the lower bowl, sections 1 through 22, on the arena's fourth level) wraps the court, and the Balcony (the upper bowl, sections 301 through 330, on the seventh level) sits above a ring of suites. The famous parquet floor is the centerpiece either way.
Courtside and the benches
Courtside seats (row AA in seating guides) run along the sidelines and baselines. TickPick's seating guide places the Celtics bench in front of Loge 22 and the visitors in front of Loge 2, which puts the center-court sideline on the side anchored by Loge 1. Treat that as orientation and confirm the bench side on your listing's map.
Best overall view
Loge sections near center court, in roughly rows 2 through 19, give the best balance of elevation and closeness. The front row behind a bench is less ideal than it looks, since standing players and staff often block the view. Club seats at the back of the lower bowl on both sidelines add padded seats, in-seat service and access to the 1928 Club.
Behind the baskets
Loge end sections cost noticeably less than sideline seats and put you close to the action at one end. Plays at the far basket are harder to judge, so expect to use the Hub Vision video board more.
The Balcony
The Balcony is steep, which helps sightlines but can be uncomfortable for anyone with mobility concerns. Centered sections, 301 to 303 and 329 to 330 on the bench side and 314 to 318 across the court, show the full floor and are the best budget pick. The highest corner rows are the seats to avoid if you want to see faces rather than jersey numbers.
The NBA schedule and the Celtics games that sell first
Each NBA team plays 82 regular-season games, 41 at home. Preseason games come in early October, the regular season runs from mid-October to mid-April, and the playoffs run from April into June. The NBA has played on Christmas Day since 1947, and the holiday slate often features national-TV matchups.
- The Lakers: the league's oldest championship rivalry and usually one of the hardest regular-season tickets in Boston.
- The Knicks and 76ers: short trips for visiting fans, who add buyers to the market and noise to the building.
- Weekend and holiday games: Friday and Saturday nights and school-vacation weeks draw more families and visitors.
- Playoff games: the highest-demand dates of the year, with prices rising round by round.
- Weeknights against rebuilding teams: the best chance at lower prices and better seat locations.
Because the Bruins share the building, back-to-back events on the same weekend are common, which can tighten parking and nearby restaurant reservations.
Celtics fans on the road
Celtics fans are a visible presence in many Eastern Conference arenas. The easiest trips are the Atlantic Division cities: New York and Brooklyn are a train ride away, and Philadelphia and Toronto are short flights.
Visiting fans usually find the most affordable seats in upper-level corners. Buy earlier for a rivalry game, since the least expensive inventory in a sold-out building disappears first.
Getting to TD Garden and getting inside
TD Garden sits directly above North Station, served by the MBTA's Green and Orange lines and by commuter rail trains that pull in below the arena. That makes the T the simplest option for most visitors. The North Station Garage beneath the arena is the closest parking, and pre-purchasing is recommended for Celtics games.
As of the 2026 season, TD Garden limits bags to 6 by 4 by 1.5 inches, with exceptions for diaper and medical bags, and offers a paid bag check. Tickets are mobile only and use a rotating barcode, so screenshots will not scan. Doors for general ticket holders have opened about one hour before tipoff, re-entry is not permitted, and concessions are cashless with cash-to-card kiosks. Review the TD Garden A–Z guide before you go, since policies change.
The Sports Museum on levels 5 and 6 and the Legends restaurant are worth arriving early for, and the North End and the West End are a short walk for a meal before the game.
From Boston Garden to the parquet at TD Garden
The Celtics played at the original Boston Garden until 1995, then moved next door to the new arena, which opened on September 30, 1995, as the FleetCenter. It became TD Banknorth Garden in 2005 and TD Garden in 2009. The parquet floor, the banners and the retired numbers made the move, keeping the visual identity fans associate with the franchise.
- 1957: the first title, in Russell's rookie season.
- 1959–1966: eight consecutive championships.
- 1980s: three titles and a string of Finals meetings with the Lakers.
- 2008 and 2024: the franchise's 17th and 18th championships, the latter extending its league record.
