The Suns: Phoenix's original major-league team
The Phoenix Suns play home games at Mortgage Matchup Center in downtown Phoenix, with a regular season from October to mid-April and playoffs from April into June. They compete in the Western Conference's Pacific Division as its only team outside California.
The Suns began play in 1968 as an expansion team. Their story starts with a near miss: after the first season, Phoenix lost a coin flip to Milwaukee for the top draft pick, and the Bucks took the player later known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The Suns have reached three NBA Finals without winning one. In 1976 they lost to the Boston Celtics in a series remembered for a triple-overtime Game 5. In 1993, in Charles Barkley's first season in Phoenix, they lost to the Chicago Bulls. In 2021 they lost to the Milwaukee Bucks.
The mid-2000s teams led by Steve Nash, nicknamed "Seven Seconds or Less" for their fast pace, changed how the league thought about offense. Rosters turn over quickly in the NBA, so check the current lineup before you buy for a particular player.
Mortgage Matchup Center and its many names
The arena opened in 1992 at 201 East Jefferson Street, replacing the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum, the "Madhouse on McDowell," where the Suns played their first 24 seasons. It has carried more names than almost any arena in the league: America West Arena, US Airways Center, Talking Stick Resort Arena, Phoenix Suns Arena, Footprint Center from 2021 to 2025, and Mortgage Matchup Center since 2025. Older names still turn up on maps and in conversation.
A major renovation approved in 2019 was completed by the 2021 Finals. The arena seats 17,071 for basketball, one of the smaller capacities in the NBA, which helps the upper level feel closer to the floor than in larger buildings. The WNBA's Phoenix Mercury share the building.
Seating is in two main bowls: the 100 level close to the court and the 200 level above it, with premium seating and suites between. In the upper level, sections 203 and 219 sit at center court, according to a seat-view guide; confirm locations on the seat map for your game.
Where to sit for a Suns game
Courtside
Floor seats put you at the edge of the court. They are the closest seats, not the best for seeing plays develop at the far end.
100 level sideline
Center-court sections in the lower bowl are the top seats for the game itself and keep their value against every opponent. A middle row clears the benches and courtside rows in front of you.
100 level corners and baselines
Corners offer a close, diagonal view of both baskets at a lower price than center court. Seats directly behind the baskets cost less again, but the backboard and support block part of your view when play is at your end. Higher rows behind the basket are better than the front rows.
200 level
The upper level is the value play, and the arena's modest capacity helps. Center-court sections such as 203 and 219 give an even view of both halves; seat-view guides suggest the first 10 rows for basketball. The top rows at the ends are the ones to skip if you want detail.
Season shape and the Suns' biggest games
The NBA calendar runs on a set pattern: October preseason games, an 82-game regular season (41 home games) from October to mid-April, NBA Cup games in November and December, a play-in tournament in mid-April, and playoff rounds from April through June.
- The Los Angeles Lakers: the longest-running rivalry, built on repeated playoff meetings, and a game where visiting fans travel well from Southern California.
- The San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Mavericks: frequent playoff opponents from the Nash era and beyond.
- Weekend and holiday dates: Friday and Saturday games and home dates around the winter holidays sell through before midweek games.
- Playoff games: home postseason dates are confirmed late and sell fast.
Early-season weeknight games against Eastern Conference teams without a marquee star are usually the easiest to buy. Watch injury reports and recent results; the resale market reacts quickly to both.
Getting downtown: light rail, parking and timing
Mortgage Matchup Center is one of the easiest NBA arenas to reach by train. Valley Metro Rail stops right by the arena: 3rd Street/Jefferson for eastbound trains and 3rd Street/Washington for westbound trains. Light rail connects to Tempe and Mesa, which makes park-and-ride lots along the line a practical option.
Drivers will find garages and lots throughout downtown Phoenix, and nearby Chase Field shares the area during baseball season. When the Diamondbacks play at the same time, expect heavier traffic and fuller garages. The downtown blocks around the arena have restaurants and bars within a short walk for a pregame meal.
Check Valley Metro for current train schedules before a late game.
Gameday rules: bags and arrival
As of recent seasons, local reporting describes a policy in line with NBA guidelines: purses, medical and diaper bags up to 14 by 14 by 6 inches are allowed, small clutches qualify for faster entry, and standard backpacks are prohibited. Check the arena's current policy before you go, since rules can change between seasons and for concerts.
Plan to arrive 45 minutes before tipoff to clear security and catch the introductions. Even in winter, Phoenix evenings are mild, so the walk from light rail or a garage is easy. Every order on GoodSeats comes with guaranteed entry.
