The Saints in brief: a city's team and a Super Bowl title

The New Orleans Saints play their home games at the Caesars Superdome, the fixed-roof stadium in the city's Central Business District, from September into early January. The NFL awarded the franchise on November 1, 1966, and the Saints began play in 1967. The name nods to the jazz standard "When the Saints Go Marching In," the fleur-de-lis logo to the city's French heritage, and the black and old gold colors to the oil wealth of the team's first owner.

The Saints compete in the NFC South with Atlanta, Carolina and Tampa Bay. Their high point came after the 2009 season, when they beat the Indianapolis Colts 31–17 in Super Bowl XLIV on February 7, 2010. The franchise has nine division titles and 14 playoff appearances. Tom Benson owned the club from 1985 until his death in 2018, when his wife, Gayle Benson, succeeded him.

  • Fan identity: the "Who Dat" chant and nickname, heard throughout the building and the city.
  • Mascots: Gumbo and Sir Saint.
  • Rivalry that matters most: Atlanta, dating to the late 1960s, when both joined the league as Southern expansion teams.

Where to sit for a Saints game in the Superdome

The Superdome seats 73,208 for football and expands to 76,468 for the largest events. It names its levels rather than only numbering them:

  • Plaza (100s): the lower bowl, closest to the field.
  • Loge Club (200s and 300s): premium club seats along both sidelines across two short levels, with club lounge access.
  • Upper level (500s and 600s): the first rows are Upper Box seats in the 500s, and the Terrace seats in the 600s climb to the top of the dome.

Best overall view

The Loge Club is the best football angle in the building, raised above the field on the sideline, and it is priced accordingly. In the Plaza, rows in the teens and higher on the sideline clear the bench crowd and still feel close.

Best value

The 500-level Upper Box sits at the front of the upper deck and is often the best value for seeing the whole field. Midfield Terrace seats are the budget pick; section 641, for example, has entrances at rows 7 and 22, so the climb is shorter than it looks.

Seats to skip

High Terrace corners and end zones are the weakest seats in the dome, far from the field and at a sharp angle. Seating guides list sections such as 259, 340 and 641 as on the Saints side; confirm the sideline on the seat map for your listing before paying extra for it.

Under a fixed roof, sun and rain are never factors. Noise is: the closed dome traps sound and makes it hard for opposing offenses to hear.

The schedule and the dates that sell first

The NFL season has a short August preseason, a 17-game regular season from September into early January, and the playoffs from mid-January. The Saints host eight or nine regular-season games a year.

  • Atlanta: the oldest rivalry in the division and the date most Saints fans circle first. The all-time series has been close to even for more than 100 meetings.
  • Division rivals: games against Carolina and Tampa Bay carry standings weight and draw traveling fans.
  • Prime-time games: night games in the Superdome are louder than usual and draw national interest.
  • Holiday and event weekends: New Orleans fills up for festivals and conventions, so hotel availability can be tighter than the ticket market suggests.
  • Preseason games: the lowest-demand dates and a good first look at the building.

Resale prices tend to move most in the final days before a game, as playoff stakes and the opponent's form become clear. Buyers who want a specific section, such as the Loge Club, should not wait for the last minute.

Gameday logistics: streetcar, Champions Square and entry

The Superdome sits at 1500 Sugar Bowl Drive, a walk from many downtown and French Quarter hotels. The Loyola Avenue streetcar line stops at Poydras Street near the stadium and connects to the Canal Street line. The rideshare zone has been on Poydras Street between Loyola Avenue and Carondelet Street and is geofenced, so you can request a ride only once you are inside it.

For the 2025 season, gates opened two hours before kickoff, and Champions Square, the outdoor plaza beside the stadium that serves as the main pregame party, opened three hours before kickoff for ticketed guests. Stadium garages are largely held by season ticket holders, with limited game-day sales, and parking passes have been mobile only.

As of the 2025 season, the Superdome enforced the NFL clear-bag policy (clear bags no larger than 12 by 6 by 12 inches, or a one-gallon clear freezer bag, plus a small clutch of about 4.5 by 6.5 inches). Saints tickets have been fully mobile through the team or SeatGeek app, and the stadium is cashless. Check the Saints gameday playbook for current rules before you go.

Following the Saints on the road

Saints fans travel well, and the division schedule helps. Atlanta is the trip that matters most, and Saints fans have long shown up in large numbers for the Falcons game. Tampa and Charlotte are both reachable for a weekend. In opponents' stadiums, upper-deck and end zone sections are where visiting fans usually gather.

History: Tulane Stadium, Katrina and the road to Miami

The Saints played at Tulane Stadium from 1967 to 1974 and moved into the Superdome in 1975. The early decades were lean. The first winning season came in 1987, at 12–3, and the first playoff win came in the 2000 season, against the defending champion St. Louis Rams.

  • 1967: John Gilliam returned the opening kickoff of the franchise's first game 94 yards for a touchdown.
  • 1970: Tom Dempsey kicked a then-record 63-yard field goal against Detroit.
  • 2005: after Hurricane Katrina, the Saints played home games at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, the Alamodome in San Antonio and Giants Stadium.
  • 2006: the Superdome reopened, and Steve Gleason's blocked punt on the opening series of a 23–3 win over Atlanta became a symbol of the city's recovery.
  • 2009 season: the Saints won Super Bowl XLIV in Miami Gardens, their only Super Bowl appearance.
  • 2018 season: a missed pass-interference call late in the NFC Championship Game against the Rams became one of the most disputed calls in league history.
