The Guardians in brief: a charter club with a new name
The Cleveland Guardians play their home games at Progressive Field in downtown Cleveland, and the regular season runs from late March or early April through late September. The franchise was a charter member of the American League in 1901 and has played in the AL Central since 1994. It was known as the Bluebirds, then the Naps (1903 to 1914), then the Indians from 1915. In December 2020 the club announced it would drop the Indians name after the 2021 season, and it has played as the Guardians since 2022.
The new name comes from the Guardians of Traffic, eight Art Deco sculptures from 1932 by Henry Hering on the city's Hope Memorial Bridge. The club has won two World Series, in 1920 and 1948, and six American League pennants. Team colors are navy blue, red and white, and the mascot is Slider.
The rivalries that shape demand are the division rivals Detroit Tigers and Chicago White Sox, and the in-state Cincinnati Reds, with whom Cleveland plays for the Ohio Cup each year.
Progressive Field: a smaller, closer ballpark
Progressive Field opened on April 4, 1994, as Jacobs Field, replacing Cleveland Stadium, which the team had shared with the Browns. Local fans still call it the Jake. Progressive Insurance bought the naming rights in 2008, and in April 2024 the deal was extended through at least 2036. The address is 2401 Ontario Street.
The ballpark has shrunk on purpose. It opened with 42,865 seats, peaked at 45,569 in 2010, and after renovations in 2015 and 2016 and again in 2024 and 2025 it held 34,820 as of 2025, the smallest capacity in Major League Baseball. Fewer seats mean fewer resale listings for big games, but also a bowl where most seats feel close.
Look for the 19-foot wall in left field, the white light towers that rise 200 feet above street level, and Heritage Park in center field, which honors the greatest names and moments in club history. From June 1995 to April 2001 the park sold out 455 consecutive games, a major league record at the time.
Where to sit: dugouts, shade and the shallow lower bowl
Seating follows the standard pattern: the 100 level (the field level), the 300 level and the 500 level (the upper deck). Infield seats on the field level are sold under names such as Diamond Box and Field Box, depending on how close the rows are to the field.
Guardians dugout vs. visitors dugout
Seating guides place the Guardians dugout in front of sections 160 through 164 and the visitors' dugout in front of sections 140 through 146. Home fans who want to see the players come and go should shop the 160s; the sections between the dugouts, behind home plate, give the truest view of the strike zone.
Sun and cover
Seats on the third-base side of the field see shade before the first-base side, which matters for weekend afternoon games in June, July and August. Cover depends on row: in section 142, for example, rows X and up sit under the overhang. If you are buying a day game in summer and want shade, choose higher rows in the lower bowl rather than the front rows.
Sightlines to know about
Guides describe the lower bowl as relatively shallow, so a tall fan one row ahead can block part of your view. Buying a few rows higher, or an aisle seat, usually solves it. Because the whole bowl holds fewer than 35,000, the 500 level is a reasonable value pick for a first visit; the outfield seats below the light towers trade the pitch-by-pitch angle for a closer look at home runs.
The schedule and the games that sell out
Spring training runs in February and March at Goodyear Ballpark in Goodyear, Arizona, the club's Cactus League home since 2009, shared with the Reds since 2010. The regular season runs from late March or early April into late September, with the postseason in October for qualifying teams.
- Opening Day draws the biggest crowd of the spring, whatever the April weather.
- Tigers and White Sox series matter in the standings and draw road fans from Detroit and Chicago.
- The Ohio Cup series with the Reds pulls fans from across the state.
- Summer Friday and Saturday games, especially those with fireworks, fill well ahead of weeknights.
With the smallest capacity in the majors, big dates tighten faster here than in larger parks. After the club's 2025 AL Central title, demand for weekend and late-season games has been firmer. Weeknight games in April and May, when Lake Erie weather is unpredictable, are the most common value dates, and those prices often ease close to first pitch.
Getting downtown and getting in
The simplest way in is the RTA rail system: a five-minute enclosed walkway connects the ballpark to the RTA stations, opening no later than 5:30 p.m. for weeknight games and 5 p.m. for Saturday games. Drivers can use the garage reached from Huron Road, Eagle Avenue or Bolivar Road, and accessible spaces are first come, first served.
As of the 2026 season, the team lists these policies (check the current guide before you go):
- Bags are limited to 16 by 16 by 8 inches, plus diaper bags, medical bags and clutches; hard-sided coolers are prohibited.
- Gates open one hour before first pitch Sunday through Thursday, 90 minutes early on Fridays and Saturdays in April, May and September, and two hours early on summer Fridays and Saturdays.
- Payments are cashless, with reverse ATMs that convert cash to a prepaid card at no charge.
- Tickets are managed in the MLB Ballpark app.
- Smoking and vaping are prohibited under Ohio law.
Every GoodSeats order includes free shipping and no digital transfer fees.
