Home games at Kauffman Stadium · season runs late March–September

Kansas City's two-time champions play at the K, a fountain-lined ballpark beside Arrowhead where tailgating and the opponent drive demand.

Upcoming Kansas City Royals dates

Dates and live ticket listings appear here as soon as they are on sale. The guide below covers what to know before you buy.

Kansas City's American League club since 1969

The Kansas City Royals play their home games at Kauffman Stadium, known locally as the K, in the Truman Sports Complex off Interstate 70, and the regular season runs from late March or early April through September. The Royals joined the American League as an expansion team in 1969. They are named for the American Royal, a livestock show, rodeo and barbecue competition held in Kansas City since 1899.

  • World Series titles: 1985, over the St. Louis Cardinals in the all-Missouri I-70 Series, and 2015, over the New York Mets.
  • Pennants: four, in 1980, 1985, 2014 and 2015.
  • Division: the AL West from 1969 to 1993, and the AL Central since 1994.
  • Retired numbers: George Brett (5), Frank White (20) and manager Dick Howser (10), plus Jackie Robinson's 42 across the league.

The Cardinals are the natural in-state rival, and the Yankees remain a historic one after meeting the Royals in the ALCS each year from 1976 to 1978.

Kauffman Stadium: fountains, Crown Vision and the bowl

Kauffman Stadium opened on April 10, 1973, beside Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Kansas City Chiefs. It took its current name in 1993 to honor founder Ewing Kauffman. Wikipedia lists capacity at 37,903, which makes it one of the more intimate parks in the majors.

The signature feature is the Water Spectacular behind the right-field wall, a 322-foot display described as the largest privately funded fountain in the world. Above it, the crown-topped Crown Vision scoreboard, installed in 2008, was the largest HD display in the world when new. A renovation completed in 2009 added a 360-degree outfield concourse, wider concourses and the Royals Hall of Fame in left field.

The seating levels run from the field level (the 100 sections around the diamond) up through the plaza, the loge, the club and the upper-deck View level (the 400 sections). The outfield has been reshaped several times since 1973, so the park plays differently from era to era.

The Royals have announced plans to leave. In April 2024, Jackson County voters rejected a sales-tax extension tied to a new ballpark, and on April 22, 2026, the Royals and Hallmark Cards announced a partnership to build a new ballpark and entertainment district at Crown Center near downtown. The current lease runs through the 2030 season, so Kauffman remains home for now; check the team's announcements for timing.

Best seats for a Royals game

Kauffman Stadium faces northeast. The sun rises over center field, arcs behind home plate and sets behind the third-base side, so the third-base line is the shady side and the first-base side and right field stay sunny longer. For a summer night game, most seats from home plate to the left-field pole are in shade by first pitch; the first-base side stays sunny well into the game.

Dugout boxes

The infield Dugout Box seats on the 100 level cover sections 116–125 and 130–139. Per RateYourSeats, the Royals dugout sits in front of sections 136–139 and the visitors dugout in front of sections 116–119. These field-level seats have no overhang above them, so they offer very little shade during day games. Middle rows give the best balance of proximity and a view over the dugout roof.

Plaza and loge for shade

For a 1:10 p.m. game, the 200-level sections on the third-base side, roughly 217–225, pick up shade by midgame, and the loge level offers better coverage still, especially on the third-base side.

The View level

The 400-level View seats are the value tier. Kauffman's upper deck feels close because the stadium is relatively small, and the seats under the roof overhang (roughly sections 409–431) offer shade, with the third-base side preferred.

Outfield and the fountains

The outfield seats beside the fountains are a fun, relaxed choice, especially for families heading to the Outfield Experience. The tradeoff is distance from the plate and full sun for afternoon games on the right-field side.

Seats to avoid on hot days

  • Low first-base-side seats at a day game in July or August: direct sun with no overhang.
  • Right-field outfield seats for afternoon games: the longest sun exposure in the park.
  • Deep corners near the foul poles: angled toward the outfield instead of the plate.

Schedule and the games that draw a crowd

The Royals train each February and March at Surprise Stadium in Surprise, Arizona. The 162-game regular season runs from late March or early April through late September, followed by the postseason in October when the team qualifies. The 2024 Royals reached the playoffs for the first time since the 2015 championship season.

Demand at the K tends to rise for:

  • Opening Day, a tailgating event across the Truman Sports Complex lots.
  • Cardinals series, the I-70 rivalry, which brings a large red-clad crowd from across Missouri.
  • Yankees visits, which carry the 1970s playoff history and a traveling fan base.
  • Summer weekends and fireworks nights, especially Friday and Saturday games in June and July.
  • Postseason games, the hardest tickets of all.

Weeknight games in April, May and September against out-of-division visitors are usually the easiest to buy.

Parking, tailgating and stadium rules

Kauffman Stadium is a drive-in ballpark: there is no rail line to the Truman Sports Complex, and most fans arrive by car and park in the lots shared with Arrowhead. Parking is digital through the MLB Ballpark app, and as of the 2026 season the team charges less for parking bought online in advance than at the gate.

Tailgating is part of Royals culture, within rules. As of 2026, the team prohibits saving spaces, blocking roadways and camping, requires guests to enter the game or leave the complex starting in the 2nd inning, and closes lots one hour after the game.

As of the 2026 season, Kauffman Stadium uses a clear-bag policy (bags must be clear and no larger than 12 by 12 by 6 inches, or a one-gallon clear zip-seal bag), with a small clutch of up to 9 by 5 inches allowed alongside. Fans may bring food in a clear one-gallon bag and one sealed plastic water bottle of one liter or less. Gates open 90 minutes before first pitch Friday through Sunday and on giveaway days, and one hour before on other weeknights. There is no re-entry. Check the team's Kauffman Stadium guide before you go.

Inside, the Outfield Experience includes the Little K wiffle-ball field, mini golf and a carousel, and the Royals Hall of Fame displays the club's championship trophies.

Royals moments worth knowing

  • 1976–1978: three straight division titles, each ending with an ALCS loss to the Yankees.
  • 1980: the first pennant, followed by a World Series loss to Philadelphia.
  • 1983: the Pine Tar Game at Yankee Stadium, where George Brett's home run was disallowed for pine tar on his bat, then reinstated on appeal by AL President Lee MacPhail.
  • 1985: the I-70 Series title, clinched when Bret Saberhagen shut out the Cardinals 11–0 in Game 7.
  • 2014: a 12-inning, 9–8 Wild Card Game win over Oakland, sealed by Salvador Pérez's walk-off single, ended a 28-year playoff drought and started a run to the World Series.
  • 2015: a World Series title over the Mets, clinched 7–2 in 12 innings in Game 5.

Kauffman Stadium has also hosted the All-Star Game twice, in 1973 and 2012.
