The Twins in brief: a Senators lineage and two Metrodome titles
The Minnesota Twins play home games at Target Field, an open-air ballpark in the North Loop of downtown Minneapolis, from late March or early April through late September, with postseason games in October. The franchise joined the American League in 1901 as the Washington Senators and moved to Minnesota for the 1961 season. The name refers to the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, a choice meant to claim both cities rather than favor one.
The club has won three World Series: 1924 as the Senators, then 1987 and 1991 in Minnesota, both won at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. It has won six AL pennants (1924, 1925, 1933, 1965, 1987 and 1991), four AL West titles and nine AL Central titles, the most recent in 2023.
- Ballparks: Metropolitan Stadium (1961–1981), the Metrodome (1982–2009) and Target Field (2010 to the present).
- Hall of Famers: Harmon Killebrew, Rod Carew, Kirby Puckett, Bert Blyleven and Joe Mauer, among others.
- Rivalries: the Chicago White Sox within the AL Central and the Milwaukee Brewers in the interleague "Border Battle."
- Mascot: T.C. Bear, introduced in 2000.
Where to sit at Target Field for a Twins game
Target Field seats 38,544, according to Wikipedia, across a lower bowl (the 100-level sections nearest the field), a club level (the 200s) and the upper deck, called the Terrace (the 300s). The outfield is asymmetrical, running from 328 feet in right field to 411 feet in deep left-center.
The dugouts and the infield
Seating guides disagree on which dugout the home team uses: Ballparks of Baseball and Ballpark E-Guides place the Twins on the first base side, while TickPick puts them on the third base side. If sitting behind the home dugout matters to you, confirm it on the team's seat map before you buy. Either way, the Dugout Box sections between the bases are the premium lower-level seats, and the Champions Club behind home plate is the all-inclusive premium area, with food and drink included.
The upper deck, the best value
The Terrace level is steep but close to the field for an upper deck, and a large canopy covers about half of it. Infield Terrace sections in the low 300s give the full skyline view behind the outfield along with shade, which makes them the strongest value choice in the building.
The outfield and the Home Run Porch
The left field bleachers (sections 128–131) put you near the bullpens, which sit in left-center beneath the Home Run Porch. The Porch itself (sections 229–234 and 329–334) is lively and close to home run balls, but it has almost no shade. Right field sections 132–136 sit under a grandstand overhang, so they are better for a hot afternoon.
Seats to think twice about
- The back rows of the lower bowl are covered, which is good in rain, but the overhang can cut off the view of high fly balls and the scoreboard.
- Front rows behind railings in the upper levels can force you to lean forward to see the near baseline.
- Deep outfield upper sections are far from the infield and see less of the skyline.
Sun, shade and Minnesota weather
Target Field has no roof; a retractable roof was considered and dropped because it would have added about 100 million to the cost. That makes weather the biggest variable in choosing a seat.
- For day games in summer, Rate Your Seats recommends Terrace sections 301–316 for reliable shade at a 1 p.m. start, and sections 308–322 for shade at a moderate price. In the lower bowl, rows 20 and up in sections 107–122 sit under cover.
- The sunniest seats are in left and center field, which stay in direct sun the longest, and the Home Run Porch.
- For April and late September night games, the calculation flips. Temperatures can fall sharply after dark, and a sunny outfield seat is the warmer one early in the game. The ballpark has heated concessions, restrooms and lounge areas on every level, according to Ballparks of Baseball, but the seats themselves are outdoors.
Rain delays happen. If the forecast is unsettled, a covered seat (rows 20 and up in the infield lower bowl, or rows 5 and up in most Terrace sections) is worth the trade-off in view.
The season and the Twins games that sell first
Each MLB team plays 162 regular-season games, 81 at home. Spring training runs in February and March, the regular season starts in late March or early April, and it ends in late September, with the All-Star break in mid-July. Twelve teams reach the postseason. Since 2023 MLB has used a balanced schedule in which every team plays every other team at least once.
Demand at Target Field follows the calendar more than at most parks:
- Opening Day and the home opener weekend draw big crowds despite the cold.
- Summer weekends from June through August are the busiest dates of the year, and gates open two hours early on Friday through Sunday.
- Brewers series bring Wisconsin fans across the border and lift demand.
- Weeknight games in April and September are usually the easiest tickets to find, and the weather is the reason.
- Postseason games are the highest-demand tickets; the 2023 Wild Card win over Toronto ended an 18-game postseason losing streak dating to 2004.
Because most tickets on the resale market are priced by demand, the same seat can cost far more on a July Saturday than on an April Tuesday.
Getting to Target Field and gameday details
Target Field is one of the easiest MLB parks to reach without a car. Target Field Station, at the ballpark, is the end of the METRO Blue Line and Green Line light rail, and Wikipedia reports that more than 8,000 fans typically arrive that way. The Northstar commuter rail line, which also served the station, ran its last trains on January 4, 2026, and was replaced by bus service, so plan on light rail or a bus from the north suburbs.
Ballparks of Baseball counts about 20,000 parking spaces within a block of the ballpark, and the team sells preferred parking in Ramps A, B and C and the Hawthorne Ramp in advance for the 2026 season.
As of the 2026 season, according to the Target Field guest guide:
- Bags: single-compartment bags up to 16 by 16 by 8 inches are allowed; hard-sided coolers are not.
- Tickets: all tickets are digital through the MLB Ballpark app; screenshots and printouts are not accepted.
- Gates: open one hour before first pitch for Monday–Thursday night games, 90 minutes before weekday afternoon games and two hours before Friday–Sunday games.
- Re-entry: not allowed.

Notable moments in Twins history
The Senators-era franchise won its only Washington title in 1924. After the move west, the Twins reached the 1965 World Series and won AL West titles in 1969 and 1970.
The 1987 team beat the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games, helped by a loud Metrodome crowd and home-field advantage. The 1991 World Series against Atlanta is widely ranked among the best ever played. In Game 6, Kirby Puckett made a leaping catch at the wall and then won the game with an 11th-inning home run. Game 7 was scoreless through nine innings before Gene Larkin's hit won it in the 10th.
Target Field opened on April 12, 2010, and hosted the 2014 All-Star Game. The 2019 club hit 307 home runs and earned the nickname "Bomba Squad." Outside the gates, Target Plaza holds statues of franchise greats, including Killebrew, Carew, Puckett and Mauer, and the "Minnie and Paul" sign in center field lights up when the Twins score.
