Denver's mile-high National League franchise
The Colorado Rockies play their home games at Coors Field in Denver's Lower Downtown (LoDo) district, and the regular season runs from late March or early April through September. The club was awarded as an expansion franchise in 1991, began play in 1993 and became the first Major League Baseball team based in the Mountain Time Zone. It competes in the National League West against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants.
The name comes from the Rocky Mountains, and the purple in the uniforms nods to the line "for purple mountain majesties" in "America the Beautiful." Denver embraced the team from day one: the 1993 Rockies drew 4,483,350 fans while playing at Mile High Stadium, still the single-season attendance record for any MLB club.
- Postseason: five appearances, all as a Wild Card (1995, 2007, 2009, 2017, 2018).
- Pennant: one National League title, in 2007.
- Division titles: none to date; the Dodgers and Giants have dominated the NL West since 1993.
- Retired numbers: Todd Helton's 17 and Larry Walker's 33, plus Jackie Robinson's 42, retired across the league.
Coors Field at a glance
Coors Field opened on April 26, 1995, at 2001 Blake Street, two blocks from Union Station. Wikipedia lists its capacity at 46,897, or about 50,100 with standing room. The field sits roughly 5,200 feet above sea level, and a row of purple seats circles the upper deck to mark the point that is exactly one mile high. Look for it in the 300 level; it is a popular photo spot.
Thin air helps fly balls carry, which earned Coors Field its reputation as a hitter's park. Since 2002 the club has stored game baseballs in a humidor (a climate-controlled room that keeps the balls from drying out) to rein in the effect. For ticket buyers the practical result is simple: games here tend to run long and high-scoring, so plan on a longer evening than at most parks.
The seating bowl has three main tiers. The 100 level (field level) wraps the diamond. The 200 level is the club tier with indoor lounge access. The 300 level is the upper deck, where the purple row runs. In center field sits the Rockpile, a bleacher section roughly 600 feet from home plate, and atop the right-field upper deck is the Rooftop, a 46,000-square-foot social deck that replaced about 3,500 seats in 2013.
Where to sit for a Rockies game
Sun is the first question at Coors Field. Denver's high-altitude sun is intense, and the third-base side is the shadier side of the park, while the first-base side takes more sun later in the day. For a day game in June, July or August, a third-base seat or a covered row is the most comfortable choice.
Infield and the dugouts
On the 100 level, sections 121–125 sit behind the Rockies dugout and sections 136–140 sit behind the visitors dugout, according to a seat-by-seat guide at RateYourSeats. Rows 32 and higher in sections 120–127 and 134–141 sit under the 200-level overhang, which gives shade and rain cover at the cost of a slightly clipped view of high fly balls. The middle rows of the infield sections are the sweet spot: close, but high enough to see over the dugout roofs.
Club level
The 200 level puts you at a classic broadcast angle with indoor concessions behind you. It is worth the premium on hot afternoons or chilly April nights, less so on a mild summer evening.
Upper deck and the purple row
The 300 level is the value tier. The view from behind home plate takes in the whole field and the downtown setting around it. Pick the infield sections over the corners, since seats far down the lines angle away from the plate.
The Rockpile and the Rooftop
The Rockpile is the budget seat in the building, but it is the farthest seating from home plate in the majors, and it gets full sun until evening. Sit there for the price and the atmosphere, not for the view of balls and strikes. The Rooftop is a standing-and-mingling space rather than a seat; buy it for a social night out, not to follow every pitch.
Seats to approach with care
- Far outfield corners of the 100 level: the foul poles and the angle make it hard to follow plays at the plate.
- First-base side for 1:10 p.m. games: full sun at altitude for most of the game.
- Back rows under overhangs: shaded, but you lose sight of towering pop-ups.
Schedule shape and the games that sell first
The Rockies train each February and March at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick in Scottsdale, Arizona, a complex they have shared with the Diamondbacks since 2011. The 162-game regular season runs from late March or early April through late September, with roughly half the games at home. Postseason baseball, if the team qualifies, runs through October.
Demand at Coors Field follows a few predictable patterns:
- Opening Day is a citywide event in Denver and one of the hardest tickets of the year.
- Dodgers and Giants series bring large visiting crowds, since both clubs have big followings across the Mountain West.
- Popular interleague visitors such as the Yankees, Red Sox and Cubs draw out-of-town fans who plan trips around a Denver series.
- Summer weekends and the Fourth of July sell best; fireworks nights and giveaway days add more pressure.
- Weekday games in April and September are usually the easiest seats to find, though April nights at altitude can be cold, so bring layers.
Resale prices move with the opponent and the weekend far more than with the standings. Buying a few weeks out for a marquee series usually gives you the widest choice of sections.
Getting to Coors Field and gameday in LoDo
Coors Field sits in a walkable neighborhood of bars, breweries and restaurants, and many fans arrive on foot or by rail. Union Station is two blocks away and is served by RTD light rail and commuter rail; as of the 2026 season the team lists the A, B, C, E, G and W lines as connecting there. The team's own lots, A and B, sit next to the ballpark and accept cards only. Plan to arrive well ahead of busy games, since LoDo streets fill quickly.
Rockies fans tend to make an evening of it: dinner or a beer in LoDo, then a walk up Blake Street. The Sandlot Brewery behind the right-field stands brews on site. Remember that alcohol affects you faster at altitude, so drink water and wear sunscreen even on cool days.
As of the 2026 season, the ballpark allows only soft-sided, single-pocket bags no larger than 16 by 16 by 8 inches, prohibits backpacks, and does not allow re-entry once you leave. Gates A and E open two hours before first pitch for batting practice; the others open 90 minutes before. Check the team's Coors Field A–Z guide before you go, since policies change.
Rocktober and other franchise milestones
The defining stretch in team history came in 2007. The Rockies won 14 of their final 15 regular-season games, beat the Padres 9–8 in a 13-inning tiebreaker known to fans as Game 163, then swept the Phillies and Diamondbacks to win the pennant. Boston swept them in the World Series, but "Rocktober" remains the franchise's shorthand for that run, and Coors Field hosted its first World Series games that fall.
- 1995: the "Blake Street Bombers" (Dante Bichette, Vinny Castilla, Andrés Galarraga and Larry Walker, each with 30 or more home runs) carried the team to its first playoff berth in Coors Field's first season.
- 2014: Todd Helton's 17 became the first number the club retired.
- 2017 and 2018: back-to-back Wild Card trips, ending with a Wild Card Game loss to Arizona and a Division Series loss to Milwaukee.
- 2021: Larry Walker's 33 was retired after his election to the Hall of Fame.
Coors Field has also hosted the All-Star Game twice, in 1998 and 2021.
