The Colts: From Baltimore to Indianapolis
The Indianapolis Colts play their home games at Lucas Oil Stadium in downtown Indianapolis, with preseason in August and a regular season that runs from September into early January. The franchise began in Baltimore in 1953 and moved to Indianapolis in 1984, famously loaded overnight into Mayflower moving vans.
Few NFL teams carry as much history. The Colts won NFL championships in 1958, 1959 and 1968 and Super Bowls after the 1970 and 2006 seasons (Super Bowls V and XLI). The 1958 title game, won in overtime against the New York Giants at Yankee Stadium, is still counted among the most important games the league has played. The Indianapolis years produced a long run of contention in the 2000s, and the franchise has won 16 division titles across its history.
The Colts play in the AFC South with the Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans. The mascot is Blue, a horse who works the crowd at every home game. Ownership has stayed in the Irsay family since 1972; after Jim Irsay's death in 2025, his daughter Carlie Irsay-Gordon became principal owner.
Lucas Oil Stadium: Levels, Sidelines and Value Seats
Lucas Oil Stadium opened in August 2008 on South Capitol Avenue, just south of downtown, replacing the RCA Dome. It seats about 63,000 for football (and can expand to about 70,000 for basketball), with 139 suites. The stadium's own maps divide the seating into three levels:
- Street Level. The lower bowl, closest to the field. Sideline seats between the 20-yard lines in rows above the first handful are the premium choice. The front rows look close on a map but sit low enough that sideline personnel block parts of the field.
- Loge Level. The middle tier, with suites and club areas. A sideline Loge seat is high enough to read formations and close enough to hear the hits, which makes it the best all-around view for many fans.
- Terrace Level. The upper deck and the value tier. The lower rows of the Terrace sidelines give a full-field view; the top rows in the corners are steep and far from play, and they are where the least expensive seats usually are.
Because the roof is a climate decision rather than a constant, sun is rarely a factor. When the roof and the huge north window are open on a mild fall day, the window frames the downtown skyline from the south end of the building; seats in the south end zone and the south corners face that view. End zone seats in general are best for red-zone action and the team's entrance, and weakest for judging plays at the far end.
When Colts Tickets Are Hardest to Find
A typical home schedule includes one or two preseason games, eight or nine regular-season games and a home playoff game in years the team wins the division. Demand follows a few predictable patterns.
- Division rivals. The Titans series is the oldest rivalry in the AFC South, dating to 1970 when the Titans were the Houston Oilers. Games with the Texans and Jaguars draw more interest late in the season when the division is undecided.
- The New England Patriots. The Peyton Manning and Tom Brady era turned this into one of the league's defining rivalries, and the matchup still draws attention when it lands on the Colts' home schedule.
- Prime-time games. Thursday, Sunday and Monday night games bring a louder building and firmer prices.
- Visitors that travel well. Opponents with large national followings bring their own fans and lift demand across the building.
December games are the most variable. A playoff race tightens supply; a season out of contention can push prices down in the final days before kickoff. Early-season games against non-division opponents are typically the easiest to buy.
A Walkable Downtown Gameday
Lucas Oil Stadium is one of the easiest NFL stadiums to reach without a car. Many downtown hotels sit within walking distance, and an underground walkway connects the stadium to the Indiana Convention Center, which is useful on cold or wet days.
If you drive, the stadium's operator manages about 2,000 nearby spaces, with reservations through ParkWhiz; private lots and garages across downtown make up the rest. Tailgating happens in surface lots around the stadium. Arrive early, and confirm a lot's tailgating rules before you set up.
As of the 2026 season, the stadium allows one clear bag no larger than 12 by 6 by 12 inches (or a one-gallon clear freezer bag) plus a small clutch, prohibits fanny packs, is fully cashless and does not allow re-entry during Colts games. Gates open two hours before kickoff at four entrances: Lucas Oil (north), Huntington (west), Caesars (south) and Verizon (east). Policies change, so check the stadium's A–Z guide before you go.
Road Trips Within the AFC South
Colts fans have short trips to two of their three division rivals. Nashville is a drive of a few hours down Interstate 65, and Titans games there are a popular weekend for Indianapolis fans; the Titans move from the current Nissan Stadium to a new enclosed stadium next door for the 2027 season. Houston is a flight to a climate-controlled stadium reachable by METRORail. Jacksonville's stadium is under renovation, with reduced capacity in 2026 and the Jaguars playing their 2027 home games in Orlando, so road tickets there will be scarcer than usual.
A Stadium Built for Big Events
Lucas Oil Stadium is built to host more than the Colts. It held Super Bowl XLVI in 2012, NCAA men's Final Fours in 2010, 2015, 2021 and 2026, the Big Ten Championship Game and the Drum Corps International World Championships. Every winter the NFL Scouting Combine brings college prospects and league scouts to the building.
The retractable roof's two panels each weigh about 2.5 million pounds and take roughly 9 to 11 minutes to open or close. The roof allowed the Colts to play outdoors at home for the first time since arriving in Indianapolis; for the team's first 24 seasons in the city, the RCA Dome (originally the Hoosier Dome) kept every game indoors.
