An ABA dynasty in the heart of basketball country

The Indiana Pacers play their home games at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in downtown Indianapolis, with an NBA regular season that runs from October into April and playoffs after that. The team competes in the Central Division of the Eastern Conference.

The Pacers were founded in 1967 as an original member of the American Basketball Association (ABA, the rival league that merged with the NBA in 1976). The name nods to two Indiana traditions: the pace car of the Indianapolis 500 and harness racing's pacers. The franchise's record falls into clear chapters:

  • The ABA years: three championships, in 1970, 1972 and 1973, with Hall of Famers such as Mel Daniels, Roger Brown and George McGinnis.
  • The Reggie Miller era: years of playoff battles with the New York Knicks and the franchise's first NBA Finals, in 2000.
  • The 2025 run: an Eastern Conference title over the Knicks and a seven-game Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Pacers have not won an NBA championship. Rosters and coaches change from season to season, and injuries can reshape a team quickly, so check the team's site for the current lineup before buying around a particular player.

Gainbridge Fieldhouse: an arena designed for basketball first

Gainbridge Fieldhouse opened on November 6, 1999, at 125 South Pennsylvania Street, replacing Market Square Arena. Its brick-and-glass exterior was designed to recall Indiana's high school and college field houses, and unlike most NBA arenas it was planned mainly for basketball rather than as a multipurpose building. It seats 17,274 for basketball, a figure that has come down over the years from 18,345 at opening. The Indiana Fever of the WNBA have shared it since 2000.

The building has carried three names: Conseco Fieldhouse (1999–2011), Bankers Life Fieldhouse (2011–2021) and Gainbridge Fieldhouse (since 2021). A renovation completed in late 2022 added an outdoor entry plaza and new gathering spaces inside.

The arena lists four main levels: the Main Concourse serving the lower bowl, the Krieg DeVault Level, the KeyBank Suite Level and the Balcony Level at the top. Section numbers run in three series: low numbers closest to the court, the 100s in the lower bowl and the 200s in the balcony. Check the listing's seat map for the exact location before you buy.

Where to sit for a Pacers game

Lower bowl along the sideline

The best overall view is the lower bowl at center court, about 8 to 15 rows up. Because the fieldhouse was built for basketball, the lower bowl is pulled in tight, and even mid-level rows feel close. The front rows behind courtside sit at the height of standing players, which is exciting but hides some of the floor.

Baseline and corner seats

Lower-level baseline sections face the action at one basket and usually carry less demand than the sideline. Corners are a fair compromise, with a diagonal view of both ends. Low baseline rows can look through the basket support, so a few rows up is usually better.

The balcony

The balcony holds most of the lower-cost seats. Its front rows along the sidelines give a full view of the floor and the court's design, and for many fans they are the best value in the building. The top rows of the balcony corners are the seats to avoid: high, distant and steep.

Premium options

Loge boxes and the sideline club seating bundle food, drink and space. They make sense for groups and client outings; the view is good but not better than a mid-height lower-bowl sideline seat.

Pacers schedule shape and the matchups that fill the fieldhouse

The NBA regular season runs from October to April, 82 games with 41 at home. Preseason games come first, NBA Cup games in November and December count toward the standings, and the play-in tournament and playoffs run from April into June for teams that qualify.

  • The New York Knicks: the rivalry runs from Reggie Miller's battles in the 1990s through the 2025 conference finals, and Knicks fans travel well to Indianapolis.
  • The Detroit Pistons: a Central Division rival with a long, heated history, including the 2004 brawl at The Palace of Auburn Hills.
  • Central Division opponents such as the Chicago Bulls, an easy drive from Indianapolis, bring visiting fans and fill the balcony.
  • Weekends and holidays draw families from across the state.

Weeknight games against Western Conference opponents usually offer the most choice. Demand also follows the team's form; after a deep playoff run, interest in the next season's home schedule tends to stay high even through rebuilding stretches.

Parking, transit and entry in downtown Indianapolis

Gainbridge Fieldhouse sits in a walkable downtown with many hotels and restaurants within a few blocks. The Virginia Avenue Garage connects to the fieldhouse from its third floor, with its entrance off Maryland Street, and other garages are within walking distance. Advance parking passes are sold through ParkWhiz, which helps on nights when a Colts game or a convention fills downtown. IndyGo buses also serve the area.

As of the 2025–26 season, bags larger than 6 by 10 by 2 inches are not allowed, and backpacks and hard-sided bags are banned. Tickets are mobile only through the Ticketmaster app, all exits are final with no re-entry, and the building is smoke-free. Check the fieldhouse's A–Z guide for the current policy before you go.

There is no NBA tailgating culture to speak of. Fans eat downtown or use the new outdoor plaza before tipoff, and the crowd is knowledgeable in a way that reflects the state's high school basketball tradition. Every order on this site comes with guaranteed entry and a 100% guarantee.

Pacers moments every fan in the building knows

Before the fieldhouse, the Pacers played at the Indiana State Fairgrounds Coliseum (1967–1974) and Market Square Arena (1974–1999).

  • 1994: Reggie Miller scored 25 points in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals and flashed the choke sign at the Knicks' celebrity fan, Spike Lee.
  • 1995: Miller scored eight points in 8.9 seconds to beat the Knicks in a playoff game, a sequence still replayed in Indianapolis.
  • 2000: the first NBA Finals, a loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.
  • May 31, 2025: the Pacers beat the Knicks 125–108 at home in Game 6 to win the East, then took the Thunder to seven games in the Finals.

Larry Bird later served the franchise as head coach and team president. The fieldhouse hosted the 2024 NBA All-Star Game. Team history is on the Pacers' official site.
