Ten December nights that decide rodeo's world titles
The Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, usually called the NFR, is the season-ending championship of professional rodeo, sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). The 2026 edition runs December 3 through December 12 at the Thomas & Mack Center on the UNLV campus in Las Vegas, with one performance (a full night of competition, also called a go-round) each evening. All ten performances are listed at 5:45 p.m. local time.
Only the top 15 contestants in each of seven events qualify, based on the season's money standings, which makes 105 qualifiers in all. Each night, every qualifier competes once in their event. Prize money from all ten rounds and from the aggregate (the combined score or time across all ten rounds, known as the average) is added to season earnings, and the contestant with the most money in each event at the end of the tenth round wins the world championship and the PRCA gold buckle.
The event has been held in Las Vegas every year since 1985, with one exception in 2020. A contract signed in 2024 keeps it in the city through 2035.
How NFR tickets work when every seat is spoken for
Demand for the NFR is unusually steady. As of August 2026, the event reported 389 consecutive sold-out performances at the Thomas & Mack Center, and the ten rounds of 2025 drew 175,846 fans. A sellout of that length means the reserved seats are claimed long before December, and most fans who decide late buy on the resale market.
The structure looks like this:
- Primary sales: as of 2026, AXS is the NFR's exclusive primary and secondary ticketing partner, and the event's own site links to AXS for its listings.
- Access ONLY passes: a concourse admission with no reserved seat. It lets you into the building and its themed areas (the Cowboy Corral, the AXS Fan Zone, the ProRodeo Zone and several bars), where the live competition plays on large screens. It is a way into the atmosphere, not a seat to watch the arena floor.
- Resale: listings for reserved seats, where prices move with the night and the location.
Which nights draw the most demand:
- Opening night and the final round. The first performance carries the anticipation; the tenth decides the average and the world titles.
- Weekend rounds. In 2026 the Friday and Saturday performances fall on December 4, 5, 11 and 12, the nights out-of-town visitors find easiest to fit into a trip.
- Weeknight rounds. The Monday through Thursday performances are usually the most approachable way to see the same field of contestants.

Choosing a seat inside the Thomas & Mack Center
The Thomas & Mack Center is a basketball arena first, home to UNLV men's basketball since 1983. For the rodeo, the floor becomes a dirt arena and the building seats 18,645, larger than its basketball capacity of 17,923. Because the arena floor is far longer and wider than a basketball court, the seat that works for one sport is not automatically the best seat for the other.
- Lower rows near the floor put you close to the animals and the noise, but the arena fences, gates and working crews sit between you and the dirt. Very low rows can lose part of the action behind the rail.
- Middle rows of the lower level are the balance most rodeo fans want: high enough to see over the fences and follow a full barrel pattern or a roping run from the box to the finish, close enough to feel the speed.
- The upper level is farther away but shows the entire arena at once. For timed events, where the result depends on what happens across the whole floor, that full view is an advantage.
- The video board. A four-sided center-hung LED scoreboard was installed in 2008, and replays from it help in the seats farthest from the action.
Section layouts for the rodeo configuration are published with each year's seating map. Check the map on the ticket listing before you buy, and compare the seat's position to the bucking chutes and timed-event boxes marked on it.
What happens during a performance
Each performance runs all seven events. Rodeo splits them into two families:
- Roughstock events, where a rider must stay aboard a bucking animal for eight seconds and is scored by judges: bareback riding, saddle bronc riding and bull riding.
- Timed events, where the fastest clean run wins: tie-down roping, team roping (a header ropes the steer's horns and a heeler ropes the hind legs), steer wrestling (a rider drops from the horse and wrestles a steer to the ground) and barrel racing (a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels).
An all-around title also goes to the top earner competing in more than one event. Each night also carries a theme. In 2026 the lineup includes Golden Night on December 5, Memorial Night on December 6, Pink Night on December 7, Resistol Rookie Night on December 8, Military Night on December 9, Canadian Night on December 10, Legacy Night on December 11 and Patriot Night for the final round on December 12.
The money is serious. The 2026 purse is listed at 14,270,736 dollars, and starting in 2026 each go-round pays the top eight finishers instead of the top six. Many fans in the stands dress in western wear, and the crowd follows the standings closely because a single round can reshuffle a title race.
The NFR week outside the arena
The ten days turn much of Las Vegas into a western event. The largest companion event is Cowboy Christmas, a western gift and lifestyle show held at the Las Vegas Convention Center during the rodeo. The NFR's own schedule also lists daytime activities, the Junior NFR for young competitors, the Downtown Hoedown, and nightly entertainment and after-parties around town.
Fans without a seat often watch elsewhere. Since 2020 the NFR has been televised live on The Cowboy Channel and streamed on the Cowboy+ app, and the Access ONLY pass puts you inside the building for the broadcast on big screens. If you plan to attend several nights, a weeknight in a reserved seat and a weekend in a viewing area is a practical mix.
Getting to the Thomas & Mack Center
The arena sits at 4505 S. Maryland Parkway on the UNLV campus in Paradise, Nevada, east of the Las Vegas Strip rather than on it. Most visitors staying on the Strip reach it by car or rideshare. Arrival traffic builds before the 5:45 p.m. start on every night of the run, not only on weekends, so allow extra time.
- Hotels: the NFR names sponsor hotels each year; the 2026 list was announced in September 2026 on the event site.
- Parking and transportation: details change from year to year. Check the NFR's official site for current parking, grounds maps and transportation guidance before you go.
- Bag rules: arena entry policies are set by the venue and can change; confirm the current policy with the venue before the night you attend.
From Dallas to Las Vegas: the NFR's history
The first National Finals Rodeo was held in 1959 at the Texas State Fair Coliseum in Dallas, where it stayed through 1961. It moved to the Los Angeles Sports Arena from 1962 to 1964, then to Oklahoma City, first at State Fair Arena (1965 to 1978) and then at the Myriad Convention Center (1979 to 1984).
Las Vegas took over in 1985, and the Thomas & Mack Center has hosted every December since, except 2020. That year, COVID-19 restrictions moved the event to Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, before it returned to Las Vegas. The rodeo brings more than 170,000 fans to the city over its ten days, and the 2024 agreement extended its run there through 2035.
Frequently asked questions
When is the 2026 National Finals Rodeo?
The 2026 Wrangler NFR runs December 3 through December 12, 2026, with one performance each night at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. Each performance is listed at 5:45 p.m. local time.
Does the NFR really sell out every night?
As of August 2026 the event reported 389 consecutive sold-out performances at the Thomas & Mack Center. Reserved seats are claimed well ahead of December, so late buyers usually turn to resale listings.
What is an NFR Access ONLY ticket?
It is a concourse admission without a reserved seat. It gets you into the building and its themed fan areas, where the competition is shown live on large screens, but not into a seat facing the arena floor.
Who competes at the NFR?
The top 15 money earners of the season in each of seven events: bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, barrel racing and bull riding. That makes 105 qualifiers.
Which night is best to attend?
The final round on December 12 decides the average and the world titles, and weekend nights draw the most demand. Weeknight rounds show the same contestants and are usually easier to get into.
Has the NFR ever left Las Vegas?
Only once since 1985. In 2020 it moved to Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, because of COVID-19 restrictions, and it returned to the Thomas & Mack Center afterward. A 2024 contract keeps it in Las Vegas through 2035.
