The Red Sox in brief: a charter club and a famous drought

The Boston Red Sox play home games at Fenway Park, the oldest active ballpark in the major leagues, from late March or early April through late September, with postseason games in October. The club was founded in 1901 as the Boston Americans, an American League charter member, and took the Red Sox name in 1908. It has played in the AL East since 1969.

Boston has won nine World Series: 1903, 1912, 1915, 1916 and 1918, then 2004, 2007, 2013 and 2018. The gap between 1918 and 2004 lasted 86 years and became tied, in local lore, to the 1920 sale of Babe Ruth to the Yankees. The drought ended after the 2004 ALCS, when Boston became the first MLB team to come back from a three-games-to-none deficit, against New York.

  • Pennants and division titles: 14 AL pennants and 10 AL East titles.
  • Ted Williams: hit .406 in 1941.
  • Carl Yastrzemski: won the Triple Crown in 1967, the "Impossible Dream" season.
  • Retired numbers: 1, 4, 6, 8, 9, 14, 26, 27, 34 and 45, plus Jackie Robinson's 42.
  • The rivalry: the Yankees, a rivalry Wikipedia describes as arguably the fiercest and most historic in North American professional sports.

Where to sit at Fenway for a Red Sox game

Fenway seats 37,305 for day games and 37,755 for night games, according to Wikipedia; the difference comes from center field seats that are tarped as a batter's eye during the day. The odd-shaped field produces seating areas found nowhere else.

The dugouts and the infield

The Red Sox dugout is on the first base side, according to Ballpark E-Guides, and the visitors use the third base side. Field Box seats (the lower rows closest to the field) between the dugouts are the premium choice. Loge Box seats behind them are nearly as good and usually cost noticeably less, which makes them the best lower-level value.

The Grandstand and its poles

The Grandstand (the older wooden seats under the upper deck) is shaded and full of history, but support poles block views from some seats. A useful rule from Ballpark E-Guides: rows 5 to 10 and seats 5 to 10 are usually the safest, while poles tend to sit in the first rows and near the end seats. Avoid any listing marked OV (obstructed view) unless the discount is worth it. The right field Grandstand sections 2, 3, 32 and 33 combine pole trouble with poor angles.

The Green Monster seats

The Monster seats, added before the 2003 season on top of the 37-foot left field wall, are a bucket-list seat. They are also an awkward angle for watching the game, and only the front row sees deep left field well.

Right field and the bleachers

Right Field Box seats sit close to the field at a lower cost than comparable seats down the left field line, though many face center field rather than home plate. The bleachers run deep, the farthest rows sit up to roughly 600 feet from the plate, and they are in full sun for day games.

Sun, shade and rain at Fenway

Fenway is open air, and its covered seats are limited.

  • The Grandstand sits under the upper deck, so it is the main lower-level refuge from sun and rain.
  • The Pavilion Box seats on the upper sides are covered from row C up.
  • The bleachers and Right Field Box are fully exposed, which makes them the hottest seats for an afternoon start in July or August.

For a night game, the sun is a factor only in the early innings. On a cool April or September evening, the shaded Grandstand can be the coldest seat in the park, so dress for it.

The MLB season and the Red Sox games that sell first

Each MLB team plays 162 regular-season games, 81 at home. Spring training runs in February and March. The regular season starts in late March or early April and ends in late September, with the All-Star break in mid-July. Twelve teams reach the postseason, which can run into early November.

Since 2023 MLB has used a balanced schedule: every team plays every other team, and Boston meets each AL East rival 13 times. Wikipedia ranks Fenway fifth-smallest among MLB ballparks by seating capacity, so it runs short on seats for high-demand dates; the club once sold out 820 straight games from 2003 to 2013.

  • The Yankees: the hardest regular-season ticket at Fenway, and the series most likely to sell out early.
  • Opening Day: one of the most sought-after dates of the season.
  • Patriots' Day: the Red Sox have scheduled a home game on the April holiday every year since 1959, an early start on the same day as the Boston Marathon, which also crowds the area around Kenmore Square.
  • Weekends and summer nights: Friday and Saturday games in June through August draw the most demand; April and September weeknights are the easiest tickets.
  • October: postseason demand at Fenway is far above anything in the regular season.

Getting to Fenway and gate rules

Fenway Park sits at 4 Jersey Street in the Fenway–Kenmore neighborhood. Parking nearby is scarce, so the subway is the practical choice:

  • MBTA Green Line: Kenmore station and Fenway station are both a short walk from the gates.
  • Commuter rail: Lansdowne station sits right behind the ballpark.

As of the 2026 season, the Red Sox list these security rules. Check the current Fenway security policy before you go.

  • Bags: single-compartment bags no larger than 12 by 12 by 6 inches; clear bags are encouraged.
  • Backpacks: prohibited, including backpack-style purses, except diaper and medical bags.
  • Drinks: one sealed plastic water bottle of up to 16 ounces; no cans, glass or alcohol.
  • Screening: fans pass through metal detectors.

Gameday around Fenway

Fenway is a neighborhood ballpark, so there is no tailgating. Pregame happens on the streets around the park, in the bars and restaurants of Kenmore Square and along Lansdowne Street behind the Green Monster. Jersey Street, which was named Yawkey Way from 1977 to 2018, becomes part of the gameday scene once the gates open.

Inside, look for the hand-operated scoreboard in the left field wall and the lone red seat in the right field bleachers. In the middle of the eighth inning the crowd sings along to Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline," a Fenway tradition since 2002.

Fenway history and Red Sox milestones

Fenway Park opened on April 20, 1912, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. The Red Sox won the World Series in its first season.

  • June 9, 1946: Ted Williams hit a 502-foot home run; the red seat in Section 42, Row 37, Seat 21 marks where it landed.
  • 1967: Yastrzemski's Triple Crown in the Impossible Dream season.
  • 1975: Carlton Fisk's Game 6 home run in the World Series.
  • 2004: the ALCS comeback against the Yankees, then the first title since 1918.
  • 2007, 2013 and 2018: three more championships under owner Fenway Sports Group.
