An Original Six franchise with a century of history

The Boston Bruins play home games at TD Garden, built directly above North Station, and the NHL regular season runs from October into April. Founded in 1924, the Bruins were the NHL's first U.S.-based team. Grocery magnate Charles Adams bought the franchise, and the first general manager, Art Ross, gave it its name.

Boston is one of the Original Six (the six clubs that made up the NHL from 1942 to 1967, along with Montreal, Toronto, Detroit, Chicago and New York). The team has won six Stanley Cups:

  • The early era. 1929, 1939 and 1941.
  • The Big Bad Bruins. 1970 and 1972, with Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito.
  • The modern title. 2011, with goaltender Tim Thomas.

The Bruins have reached the Final 13 times, most recently in 2013 and 2019. They play in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference, wear black, gold and white, and have been owned by Jeremy Jacobs of Delaware North since 1975.

Choosing seats at TD Garden for hockey

TD Garden opened on September 30, 1995, replacing the old Boston Garden, and seats 17,850 for hockey. The arena labels its levels by floor: the Loge on Level 4 (the lower bowl, sections 1 through 22), premium seating and suites on Level 5, and the Balcony on Level 7 (the upper bowl, the 300 sections). Level 9 is listed as the back row of the building.

  • Loge sideline, middle rows. The best all-around hockey seats. Height of 8 to 15 rows lifts you over the glass and lets you see plays develop at both ends.
  • The glass. Row 1 of the Loge is the closest you can get and the most expensive. It is thrilling for hits and pregame warmups, but the view of the far end is flat and partly blocked by players along the boards.
  • The end where Boston shoots twice. Seating guides report that the Bruins attack the end near Loge sections 3 to 10 in the first and third periods. Corner and end seats here are often less expensive than the sideline and put you close to most Bruins goals.
  • Club seats. Premium seating adds wider chairs, wait service and access to dining areas. Worth it for a business outing.
  • Balcony. Many hockey regulars prefer the low rows of the Balcony over the back of the Loge, because you see the whole sheet and the shape of each shift. Rows near the top of the 300 sections in the corners are the seats to avoid if you can afford a step down.

Rows in some sections run up to 22 seats, so an aisle seat makes mid-period trips much easier.

When the Bruins play and which games sell first

The NHL preseason runs in September, the regular season runs from early October to mid-April, and the playoffs run from April into June. Bruins games draw strongly across the schedule, but a few patterns hold:

  • Montreal Canadiens. The oldest rivalry on the schedule, with a long playoff history. These dates usually sell first.
  • Toronto Maple Leafs. Another Original Six and Atlantic Division rival. Leafs fans travel to Boston in numbers, which tightens supply.
  • Original Six and holiday dates. Detroit, Chicago and the Rangers, plus Saturday nights and games around the winter holidays, draw extra demand.
  • Playoff games. Prices climb sharply round by round. Buying early in a series usually beats waiting for an elimination game.

Midweek games against Western Conference teams with smaller traveling followings are the best route to a Loge seat at a reasonable price. Celtics and Bruins share the building, so back-to-back event nights can affect parking and nearby restaurants.

Getting to TD Garden and through the doors

North Station sits on the ground floor beneath the arena, which makes the Garden one of the easiest NHL buildings to reach without a car.

  • Subway. The MBTA Orange and Green lines stop at North Station.
  • Commuter Rail. MBTA Commuter Rail lines to the north and west, plus Amtrak's Downeaster, arrive at the same station. Check late-night return times before you buy a 7 p.m. game.
  • Driving. The North Station Garage under the complex has about 800 spaces and a flat event rate. It fills on game nights, so prepay or use a garage farther out.
  • Rideshare. As of May 2025, evening rideshare pickup and dropoff moved to Merrimac Street.
  • Doors. For Bruins games, member doors open two hours before the game and general doors one hour before.

As of the 2025–26 season, TD Garden accepts mobile tickets only (no screenshots or printouts), allows small bags up to 6 by 4 by 1.5 inches, and offers a paid bag check on Level 1 for bags that are too big. The arena is cash-to-card, with kiosks that turn cash into prepaid cards. Check the venue's current policy at the TD Garden site before you go.

GoodSeats backs every order with guaranteed entry, so a ticket problem at the door is covered.

Inside the Garden on game night

The Garden is a hockey building first. The Sports Museum of New England is inside the complex, and the Hub on Causeway development next door added restaurants, a hotel and retail above North Station, which makes it easy to eat before puck drop without leaving the block. The North End, Boston's old Italian neighborhood, is a short walk away for a pregame dinner.

A new center-hung scoreboard and audio system were installed before the 2021–22 season, and LED lighting came in before 2018–19. The naming-rights deal with TD Bank runs through June 2045, per published reports, after earlier names that included FleetCenter and TD Banknorth Garden.
