SEC against Big Ten on New Year's Eve

The ReliaQuest Bowl is an annual college football bowl game at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa that matches a team from the SEC against a team from the Big Ten. The 2026 game is scheduled for Thursday, December 31, 2026, at noon Eastern on ESPN. Fans who have followed it for decades know it as the Outback Bowl, the name it carried for more than a quarter century until 2022.

The SEC–Big Ten pairing dates to 1995 and has held ever since, which gives this game a steadier identity than most bowls. It is organized by the Tampa Bay Bowl Association. For decades it was a New Year's Day fixture; it moved to December 31 starting with the 2024 season to fit around the expanded College Football Playoff. Tie-ins and selection order are renegotiated over time, so confirm the matchup when it is announced after the playoff field is set in early December.

What drives demand for this game

Two large conferences with big alumni bases make this one of the better-attended non-playoff bowls, but the crowd still depends on who is selected. The December 31, 2024, game between Michigan and Alabama drew 51,439. The following year, Iowa and Vanderbilt drew 35,382. The all-time record is 68,085, set on January 1, 1990, when Auburn played Ohio State.

  • Brand-name programs with national followings fill the lower bowl and push up demand for sideline seats within days of the announcement.
  • Schools with fans who travel well matter more than rankings. Michigan and Iowa have each appeared seven times, more than any other team.
  • The New Year's Eve date works in the game's favor: it is a holiday for many fans, and a noon kickoff leaves the evening free.

Prices usually firm up quickly once a high-profile SEC school is named. If the pairing is lower profile, upper-deck and end zone seats tend to stay available close to kickoff.

Raymond James Stadium seats for a noon kickoff

Raymond James Stadium, home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers since 1998, seats about 69,000 in an open-air bowl with three levels: the 100 level next to the field, the 200 level with the club areas, and the 300-level upper deck. A 103-foot pirate ship anchors the north end zone.

Sun first, then sightlines

At noon on the last day of December, the sun sits low in the southern sky. Buccaneers seating guides consistently point to the west sideline (the Buccaneers' bench side, roughly sections 106 to 115 in the lower level) as the side that gains shade first, because the sun sets behind it. Upper-deck sections 306 to 315 are the shaded choice higher up. The lower level has no overhead cover.

  • West sideline between the 20-yard lines: the best seats in the stadium for this game, combining the best view with the earliest shade.
  • 200-level club seats along the sideline offer height and covered concourse space for a long midday game.
  • The east sideline (visiting midfield is near sections 135 and 136) gives an equal view but faces the sun.
  • North end zone seats near sections 146 to 151 sit under the pirate ship. They are loud, and the view of the far end of the field is poor.
  • Front rows of the lower level are a weaker buy than they look, since sideline personnel block the field at that height.

The bowl assigns team sidelines, so check which side your school is on once the matchup is set and buy among your own fans.

Beach Day and bowl week

The best-known event of bowl week is ReliaQuest Bowl Beach Day in Clearwater. In 2025 it ran from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on December 29 at the Hilton Clearwater Beach, next to Pier 60, with both teams, their marching bands and cheerleaders, live music, and contests including a tug-of-war. The nightly Sunsets at Pier 60 festival follows.

The bowl's official site lists an event calendar, member events and a charitable giving program; dates for 2026 are posted after the teams are selected. See reliaquestbowl.com for the current schedule.

Bag rules and getting to the stadium

As of fall 2026, Raymond James Stadium allows only one small clutch no larger than 4.5 by 6.5 inches, and larger bags are refused even if they are clear. That catches many visiting fans who are used to the 12-by-6-by-12-inch clear-bag rule common at college stadiums. Lockers are available along Tom McEwen Boulevard. Check the stadium's current policy before you go.

  • Parking is cashless, and overnight parking is not allowed.
  • Tailgating is limited to one parking space per vehicle and ends at kickoff, which for a noon game means an early start.
  • Re-entry is not allowed.

The stadium is on North Dale Mabry Highway, a few minutes from Tampa International Airport. Many fans stay downtown or on the beaches and use rideshare. Every order on GoodSeats is backed by a 100% guarantee and guaranteed entry. Stadium rules are posted at raymondjamesstadium.com.

From Hall of Fame Bowl to Outback to ReliaQuest

The game began on December 23, 1986, as the Hall of Fame Bowl at Tampa Stadium, where Boston College beat Georgia 27–24 before about 41,000 fans. Outback Steakhouse took over as title sponsor in 1995, and the game was the Outback Bowl for more than 25 years. After a brief stretch as the Tampa Bay Bowl in 2022, ReliaQuest became the sponsor that June.

The game moved to Raymond James Stadium in 1999 after Tampa Stadium was replaced. Notable results include Clemson's 1991 shutout of Illinois, Tennessee's 45–6 win over Northwestern in 2016 (the largest margin in the game's history), LSU's 35–31 win over Wisconsin on January 1, 2024, and Michigan's 19–13 win over Alabama in the first New Year's Eve edition.
